Nice thread. It really reminded me of Spotted Flower by KIO Shimoku (Genshiken) though. Would make a great prequel. Anyway, thanks for posting the link.
Now to get back on topic:
Interesting theories so far. My guess would be that there really aren't enough socially adept otakus or too many closet otakus around for female otakus to find a partner.
Even if one neglects the obstacle of social inactivity, chances are slim for one of the uncommon female otakus to meet her almost equally rare male counterpart outside Japan. Plus, they'd need to click on the romantic level. Too unlikely.
It'd be far more likely for manga/anime nerds to convince their partner of their hobbies.
