Any others answer that Alucard is irrelevant .
He's everything a vampire should be . Not beautiful but seducing , not evil but totally oblivious to wrong or good , insanely strong and after more than 400 years of sucking blood , killing guys and wandering in the dark desperately insane and melancholic .
With that the american seyuu has an unforgettable voice : crispin freeman delivers his lines with a deep and sarcatisc voice .On top of that even if the japanese seyuu is not bad his voice is a bit too old while freeman's voice express sometimes all the strenght of a everlasting youth , he has a playful voice , and sometimes the burden of a overlong existence. He's both very young and very old which exactly sums up both Alucard and the very idea of the vampire .
But it's when the character go berserk and frantic that it becomes amazing : I can't get tired of hearing the array of insane laugh he has. Sometimes really enjoying the situation like in the episode 1 of the series ,sometimes aroused by the battle and being thrilled and pissed of in the same time like in the episode 6 sometimes pitying both his opponent and himself like in the OAV3 .
I'm quite interested in vampires movies, books, legends,. and Alucard definetely belongs to the top 5.
Black blood brother is a joke : it's a very very very weak copy of Hellsing for Jirou the main character . And the mere idea of a kind vampire makes me snort. It's no wonder that the serie was a failure
Trinity Blood is not bad at all but it weakens vampire myth by adding political and SF elements.... And Abel a nicky larson priest is not exactly the epitome of the vampire.
Vampire Knights is better but it's still a pure dream of young girls about vampires....
It's just about being hot and fullfilling the hidden sexual fantasy of shojo audience...
D is interesting but I don't like those half blood vampires/compassionnate vampire....Angel , Moonlight ,etc... It can be interesting as a side character like Seras is in Hellsing (and she eventually loses the battle against the blood thirst) but as a main character it's all the more boring than it's very cliche.... Those vampires that want to get back their human soul bla bla bla....Too much of them as if the audience wanted the thrill of the vampire nature without the remorse of the blood. Vampire are free of remorse and it's a shame that those weaklings entices so many peoples.
And about D well , he's way better than those pussies but he's too melancholic. Vampire is desire . He can be melancholic but it cannot be his eternal state of mind. Even if his status is a burden he must laught it off sometimes like Kain,Vorador , Alucard ,Coppola's Dracula , all of them being very melancholic sometimes which doesn't prevent them to be driven by a strong desire to taste life.
