This is gonna get locked.... but anyway...

Yea I don't think the Japanese are all that racist in general, but I do think they might be victims to racial profling, after all Japan is a pretty homogenous society, and seeing a foreigner might be a point of interest. I'm curious as where they get their stereotypes from if they're such a homogenous society.

MTV 😢
(or so I've heard)

A friend of mine was in Japan teaching for some years. He had people literally stare at him up and down. Also there have been occasions where he would sit alone on the train. This wouldn't happen all the time though.

From my experience, I think they're racist in a kind way. It's not really racism in my example though. Like, I'm asian so I pretty much blended in and could see them going up to my mates, waving and stuff (even randoms come up). I dunno why. It's probably curiousity from not seeing alot of foreigners in Japan that makes them do that. Like, it's not like racism in Western countries where people pay out each other jokingly because of their race. Asians or other nationalities get paid out in Australia but in a joking way so not many people think much about it unless they're offended by it. Sometimes I reckon it's quite funny. Anyway, in Japan, say, if some local Japanese guy walked across the street, girls (or guys) wouldn't pay attention to him because they probably see him everyday. But, if a foreigner walks across the street, MAYBE there would be people staring at him not because they dislike foreigners but because they don't see them much so they think it's weird and stare for no reason because seeing a foreigner is not an everyday thing. Yea the above probably doesn't make sense but you know.. 🤣

So basically what your saying is that they're slightly xenophobic because they do not see different types of people that often. That makes a lot of sense.

Nope, never been to Japan before.

Though... some of the situations I've read about via various articles, reminded me of Singapore in the early to mid 80s where there was a lot of xenophobia and prejudiced views against foreigners. As in: they'd try to build walls and refuse to serve "foreign" customers, mark up your pricing, stare at you, talk behind your back, etc. Well, it's a really different situation now... though.

Also, here's a pointer: sometimes, people are just being racist/xenophobic not just 'cos of culture shock but also 'cos of how they've been treated. Maybe try changing your approach and then they'll stop putting up walls between you and them?

Can we end this? It seems to me we covered just about everything.

Yeah I see what your saying. I just don't really realize it because there are so many different nationalities where I live.

well i guess they're abit patriotic and wanna display themselves better and others less, so comes out to seem racist...
at first i thought they were being racist, bu i was convinced otherwise...

i guess american cartoons do that too...
like white people are displayed beautifully beyond how they actually look even with make-up especially like family guy, or other comics like marvel and DC... these superheroines are beyond possible beauty... and they display other races as how they seem like in reality....
so i guess its media, not that theres anything wrong with it, just that every country is proud of their people and would like to display themselves better....

The Japanses aren't very racist towards
blacks and whites or anything in between,
but for sure they don't like
the Chinese and the Korean people.

Doesn't the "anything in between" = Chinese/Korean people?? xD

But what Mams said is true to some extent... at least from what I noticed.... it's mainly among the older folk.

Hate to say it but the Japanese I've met in real life and especially online tend to be some of the most racist people on Earth. Just reading the Dattebayo fansub groups messages about "Jews did 9/11" pretty much sums it up for me.

Also, don't forget that to many of them we are all Baka Gaijin 🙁

Protip: If you're in the army, try not to get stationed in Japan. There are alot of okay Japanese, but don't count on it. (Suggestion: Germany is filled with an insane amount of nice people.)

It doesn't help that not all soldiers can maintain a level of professionalism though. (Oh yeah, certain tourists don't help either).

Of course there will be some sort of racism in every country, you can't deny that. But sometimes they have a reason to be racist:
-He/she is either a kid, and they're fascinated by how you look.
-Keep in mind what happened in Pearl Harbor, many might've forgotten about it,but remember: many Japanese people died.
-Japan's been an isolated island,[some citites even stayed historical] and might not exactly open to foreigners.Maybe Tokyo or some place like that would be open to foreigners, but in the rural places you don't really know. And where exactly did you live in Japan?

So just keep your mind aware that they've got reasons to be that way.But of course, some are complete jerks who are just plain old racist.
