anyway, in WWII Japan had a very elitist view (like germany) they believed everyone else (specially other Asian cultures) where inferior to them, but we all think we are superior to other cultures in "something" being that something sex performance, ability in a sport, etc.

Racism is everywhere is just that in certain countries is Harder to detect, is not like I care, I don't want anyone to threat me as one of their own, but I don't want anyone to alienate me either.

I never really encountered racism when I went to Japan. For some reason, I got some nasty looks from girls and not really guys.

For the most part, it was just curious looks. I was only there for like two weeks. I went with a friend who was blonde and blue-eyed and did she get stares lol. (Not bad stares for the most part since she's a pretty girl)

I agree with what you said. seriously what country doesn't have people that are "negative" or racist... you can't just look at Japan and say there's only racist people there.. people are everywhere and all are different. There's bound to be some racism --> the only way to stop racism is not having people at all... which i don't think its possible or is it? 😐

I the only 'opinions' I've ever gotten from manga are:

1. Caucasian foreigners and anyone with caucasian blood in them, no matter how little, have blond hair and light eyes. They are either admired for it, or bullied for it.
2. In any kind of smut, they always use dramatic kisses as greetings, naturally.
3. They are much more bold compared to the 'reserved' Japanese characters, even if those characters aren't reserved at all.
4. A bit of negative connotation toward Chinese and Korean cultures.

I have no experience with visiting or living in Japan, but I assume every country has a bit of racism. Since they are an island country, as well, they really have had less exposure to other cultures than countries that have had *other *countries on every other side for centuries.

The only people I've seen in anime and manga who aren't a blatant stereotype are Japanese people that aren't from the Kansai region. Everybody else has had at least one manga or anime that featured them with some type of stereotype, unintentionally or not (It gets even worse when an anime or manga has some kind of plot where different people from other countries are involved, like Eyeshield 21 or Beyblade).

Racism is instinctual. Our mind tells us that anything different than ourselves we must be wary of, and thought of as a threat. The only time this becomes problematic in modern society is when a person is treated in a negative way for their differences.

In anything I've seen that's Japanese, the only time it actually has negative connotations, is when the literature is portraying children. And since children act on their instincts more than any other type of human, it's a pretty legitimate portrayal. Hell, kids are treated differently in American schools all the time. Whenever someone is in the minority - whether hispanic, african-american, asian, or even caucasian.

If you want to blame someone, blame evolution. People will always be treated differently. Hopefully the different treatment will merely be in the form of curiousity or speculation, rather than hatred.

Tolerance is a terrible word by the way. Acceptance is a much better term.

In regards to views of superiority in countries. The U.S. is currently a prime example of an extremely egotistical country, almost to the extent of the brainwashing of the American people by the government. The American people are constantly informed that they have the best technology, the best systems, the best government, the best everything... When in reality, the only thing that we have that is still the best is our military. Japan is a good example of a country that has less wealth, population, production, and yet is ahead of us in many technological implications. Mind you, it's a fact that corporations in America have too many incentives to not release technology that they've developed.. And instead they build up 10 years worth of technology to release periodically.

i agree with a lot of what you have said; i think why Americans feel they are the greatest besides the media telling them they are (which i think accounts for that mentality) is the ability to succeed in this country in ways not possible anywhere else. evidence of this is the middle class which is the richest compared to other middle classes in the world. in order not to spam i will leave that alone and stick with what this forum is about. i have never been to japan but plan to go soon but from what i;ve learnt from a japanese culture/language learning book i read and info i've picked up here and there i would think it's no different than anywhere else. i guess maybe a little different due to the monogenous society in japan. japanese mostly look, behave alike due to the country being isolated for so long so even though that has been changing post WWII they are still predominantly unmixed. take the japanese say for example that says "the nail that sticks out is the one that gets hammered first," any culture like that is bound to be a bit skitish towards outsiders but maybe not necessarily out of prejudice but more out of not knowing how to relate with them. all in all i hope they are mostly as respectful,nice as some of you have said when i visit.

From what I understand the Japanese generally are not racist against all nations outside of Japan. They are pretty tolerant of most foreigners, but the are far less tolerant of other Asian people such as Koreans, Chinese, and other Asian nations.

Just curious, but could it posssibly be because blond hair and blue eyes is more easily distinguishable than - say - brown/black hair, which is mainly used for the Japanese characters?

Same logic applies for those of Indian (dark, slightly wavy hair, brown skin, doe-eyes) or African American descent (tall, big lips), lol.

If you're going to apply a term, it's more "stereotype" than outright "racism".

Not all Japanese feel that way, or else my mother could never have married my father, seeing as he is of ethnic Thai descent, and he would be "far less tolerated." It's when people have a collective beehive mind mentality like this, that gives fodder to breeding a stereoptypical, discriminatory, and racist environment.

Well, from what I've heard, Japan is a pretty homogeneous country, so it's no surprise that they'd gawk occasionally at foreigners. It doesn't mean that it's racism, they merely do that out curiosity really. You'd do the same. And I'm pretty sure some Japanese are racist, but that goes for every country's inhabitants...
