I usually only took a quick look at them, some are pretty good though.

The occasional funny note is fine. But any more than that and it becomes unfunny. Like why are you scanlating the manga if all you want to do is make fun of it?

Certain scanlation notes are a good thing--like when a cultural reference is being explained, or the translator is clarifying a translation issues. These things help us understand the manga better, so I appreciate them.

But UGH. How many of you read Vampire Knight? There's a textbook example of the kind of thing I hate when it comes to translation notes. Very rarely does the translator include anything of value in her notes (i.e., clarification of the aforementioned cultural / translation issues). Instead, the notes are usually "reminders" of things that happened in previous chapters (that we, as readers, are capable of remembering ourselves, thank you very much), the scanlator's interpretation of the events in the manga (which she genuinely seems to think are factual and not interpretations--i.e., her explanation of why Kaname killed the council--which is why she passes them off as part of her "helpful reminders"), and worst of all, preachy diatribes telling us all to be good little fans and behave ourselves properly (as an adult, it's my right to decide if I want to buy bootleg merchandise or hate your favorite character, and I don't need your input on whether or not I should do so). I could easily ignore all these stupid little notes if there weren't at least a couple per chapter and if they didn't fill up the margins of the manga pages. (Last chapter the scanlator must have been going for a record as there seemed to be commentary every few pages.) In cases like this, I would much rather the scanlator put all this stuff on an extra page at the end of the chapter instead of on the manga pages themselves so that I could have the option of completely ignoring it. 🤢

Usully, I like them. But when they're on every other page or are explaining something "duh" about the plot then I don't appreciate them.

Can't you just put in one like "I don't mind them in general?"

All of the choices seem to take issue with at least some aspect of translator notes/comments.

I like the funny ones = I don't like the unfunny ones that explain stuff

I just ignore them = Negative/Neutral, but the neutral doesn't address the people who don't mind them.

Only good if they clarify the translation or scene = funny ones are no good.

I don't like them = Negative

They shouldn't be there unless there was also a note in the Japanese version. There are some situations where MAYBE it might help make a situation more clear with a cultural explanation or something, but I'd argue that 9 times out 10, scenes like that should be translated such that they don't require notes.

Completely unnecessary and annoying are notes from the scanlators on their reactions to certain scenes. I don't know about you, but when I read a scanlated series, I would like for it to be done as immersively as possible; I don't want the translator's opinion in the chapter itself. If it's in a separate page following the chapter or in the credits page or something though, that's fine.

Personally, I don't give a hoot if the scanlator puts in their own notes or not. Here are people that are spending their own time/money on it, so I say have at it~ if the person that is reading it dislikes it that much then that person can always find their own raws/translator/editor/etc and redo it to their own likes.
I'll read thru the ones I want, and not to the ones I don't personally care about - it really doesn't hinder my whole reading experience.

Nothing important in there.

I read them all. I like them usually. I was stuck between "i like the funny ones" and "only good if they clarify the translation or scene" because i like both types. i only dislike the ones that aren't funny and just are plain stupid 😛

I like them all actually, even the really long ones that have nothing to do with the manga, and even the rants.

I find it interesting actually, as I'm getting the real time opinion of another manga advocate.

I know this one typesetter who likes to leave a few notes commenting on a lot of stupid stuff in shoujo manga...xD and it's a guy lmfaoo~
