i only buy manga if i think the author deserves to get money from it, and i read manga in borders and i don't see anything wrong with it! the staff don't come over to shout at you, and they even have comfy chairs near the bookshelves!

Kinda the same with me. I read a lot of manga at the bookstore, but I also buy quite a bit. Around five volumes a month, but more after Christmas and my birthday, of course.

I used to buy only tanks. It's only recent that I buy the english versions, and it's only when I find them cheap in a store or online, or if I really, really like the series. I'd like to support the manga industry by buying the english version but 10 dollars for something to read is just a bit too much for someone poor like me. 🙁

I bought manga when I was a kid. But when I can read english I download manga. Since then I never ever buy manga again cause I realize the publisher do a very bad job with translate. English is not my mother language but much better. I can read english but my writing skill is suck. 😀

I can't buy english manga. $10 is too much for a book with me.

One more reason I download manga is I love computer. I always choose ebook over book. I even learn programing as a hobby and just create my read manga online site (take a look at my signature) as a first part of my self-learning Ruby on Rails programing. 😉

I have about 50 volumes (most of which are complete/up-to-date series) and around that many doujinshi. Probably around 20 more in japanese and chinese.

I'm really hesitant to buy something if I haven't read the scanlations first. I just don't want to spend money on it and not like it (and a lot of time it sounds good but just isn't that interesting). If I buy it before I read scanlations, I'll probably only buy one volume of it. Unfortunately, there's only one store anywhere near where I live that actually sells manga, and usually they don't have complete series (just random volumes) so I'm stuck buying online, which kinda sucks since you don't really get to flip through and browse.

I only have like... 10+ manga. But I have tons of gigabytes of manga scanlations. 😲 I would definitely buy manga if I had some money, but I would still download a few scans of the manga first, then I'd buy it. Manga is hard to find here anyway, and sometimes I just borrow manga from people who have money and buy manga. 🙂

I might've posted on this topic before... oh well -_-;

Both my brother an I are mangaholic, so yea we do buy mangas, and since we both read similar stuff, it costs half as much as it should since we split the cost.

I'm usually against reading and not paying, but we don't have the type of serialization of a huge variety of mangas in our side of the world, not to mention not everything were licensed, scanlations is the only way to go. People in Japan, asia were able to read a huge variety of mangas in chapters every week and it only costs less than a magazine, if you want to collect the specific series, you can buy them, but not everyone buys in volumes, or afford to, or have the space to store them.

I buy in volumes even for long series, like detective conan, but I'm pretty sure not everyone wants to buy 40+ volumes of something he/she might not even go back into reading over again, but some just doesn't have the option to read a chapter of it in a magazine everyweek where they live for a low cost like in japan.

Nope. I don't buy manga. Reason:

We don't have a lot of manga here, and they cost WAY more than magazines. Plus, they suck, and the size of each page is half what they have there in Japan. I can't even see those little text bubbles. PLUS! A lot of publishers change the attack/technique names and stuff and it really gets on my nerves.

I
So that's about 150 volumes in...about two years ^o^/ Yay for me!

I can only imagine how many I'll have in ten years O.o

Same rate as you baybay!

No wonder the bookstore owner's always giving me huge smiles. 🤣

But the translations sometimes suck, i still keep the scans.

I prefer to buy manga over downloading. Just yesterday, I purchased 3 anime DVDs and 6 volumes of manga costing roughly $170 in total.

I don't find manga expensive. at $15 to $20 per volume, I think that's a fair price. Sometimes I find new manga at $8 or $16, a bargain ^^

Someone said something about China, Asia etc getting manga cheaper. Consider this:

On my recent trip to Thailand, I purchased Shuffle! volumes 1-4 in Thai, costing 30 baht each, which is roughly less that $2 AUD, and 10 volumes of Doraemon (Thai and English edition) costing 85 baht each. Some might think, "omg, we're being ripped off in Australia/US whatever". But the volumes are different, first of all, they're smaller in size, and I think the paper quality is different. Also, wages in these countries are less that that in Australia (and probably the US too), in the country, some people earn 100 baht a day (which is roughly $4 AUD).

So my guess is that Asian countries sell manga at a cheaper price because their expenses are lower.

that and they dont have to pay anybody to translate it, one less cog in the machine
edit: it's easier to find a translator, a smaller cog in the machine

I used to live near the most expensive library in the US...and I've never seen a manga section >:-(

My local not-so-big library has got a decent selection of manga mixed-in with the young adult and the comics sections. As I recall... all of Dragonball (not Z), old copies of Battle Angel Alita, Big O, most of Love Hina, and some random Pokemon comics. The library is a great (not fantastic) resource for manga, especially if there is an online system to send volumes across the state to you, I'm reading Trigun Maximum this way.

Yeah, I was thinking FuN! wasn't looking hard enough, or maybe most of the manga is constantly being checked-out. 😉

It's called "Borders" and you usually see cheapos (well, thats what i think) at the manga section reading all the mangas.

I HATE those people! Dam, I remember once I picked it up a manga with intent to buy it, flipped through it, and found a couple pages had been torn... >:-(

You mean like tears in the pages or like they had even ripped out the pages? 😲 I've read library books where I think 10 pages (well it's more like 20 since the pages are double-sided) from Wish volume 3 had been ripped out. Personally, anything I read I usually handle very nicely if I read it in a store. I'd like to think that you couldn't even tell that I picked it up and read it. 🙂 But then again, I'm not so perfect with handling the book that it doesn't open more than an inch (I heard a Sailor Moon fan around 1997 kept her books open no more than that).

But if the person actually tore out pages, 😲 I'm surprised that person didn't try ti keep that copy and 'take' it from the store. Or maybe the person would rather risk doing that than run off with a book with what security measures there are. 😐
