if I lent something and then a person lost it (might be the end of the friendship/relationship). I know I'd be short tempered and fussy, but you're even saying "so many have been lost" so, how much money have you lost in the manga that disappeared?
I have noooooo idea. While I am pretty easy-going about it, I normally do ask people to tell me if they've lost or damaged one of my manga, and normally they give me the money necessary to buy a new copy. However, I lend them out to so many people, I just lose track about who has what, so I don't realise that something's missing until someone else asks for it. >< I tried to fix this issue this year, but I am lazy by nature, so I kinda stopped after a month.
Plus, some of my friends just end up stocking up my manga 'til the end of the school year. I swear, at the end of school two years ago my friend just slammed a HUGE stack of manga onto the lunch table. I didn't even have to ask for a bag for them; a teacher asked me if I wanted one. ._. That's not a good sign.

Awww, I hope your friends aren't bullying you. 🙁 How come they don't go out and buy the manga themselves? And if it's being offered by via scanslation how come that isn't good enough for them? I suppose they are used to or spoiled by having the book version and don't want to pay for it themselves (in which case I'd call them "freeloaders", even if I could be labelled that too). ^^U
Meh, it's not bullying, per se. I just feel really guilty if I don't have the new volumes or something. ^^; But I do know that sometimes they do go out and buy the new copies for themselves... Sometimes... ^^;;;;;

You have about 550 volumes and "don't think that" that is many?
._. I really need to learn how to word my statements better... I meant to say that I don't think that I have 550 manga sitting in my room even though that's how many should be there... As for how many are actually here... Well, I neither have the time nor patience to count them out. (I'll probably get a new estimate around the beginning of June when I have my birthday party. I recall that last year someone volunteered to count and alphabetise my manga... While I dunno if she will this year, since I have so many more now, I hope she'll at least count them for me.)

I don't know if the manga you bought are as cheap as Japanese ones used from Book-Off at about 100 yen, but at USA prices, didn't you spend $5500 on manga? ^^U
Yes, they're the USA prices. x_o So yes, I did spend around $5500 on manga in the past three and a half years... (But I get a 30% discount at my local bookstore! ^^;;; So even though I'm blowing hundreds of dollars on manga, at least I get a good deal while doing it. XD)

I refuse to buy the English translations because of the editing thing. Instead, if I find a manga I absolutely must have I go out and buy the tanks, and am happy.
It took me a while to realize by "editing" you meant censoring. xD Somehow I thought you didn't like how the companies have manga look when they do sound effects and such. Or maybe you do mean the latter?
So you buy raw manga volumes then? I guess you have to search online for them at shops unless the volumes are available locally (and you live in a big enough city to accommodate that market)? Do you buy them to support the mangaka or can you read the volumes too? 🙂

I really want to build up my collection- I only have around 40 right now that I brought back with me from Japan.(I actually managed to find volumes 1 - 20 of Vagabond for 4000 yen!) But I am trying to buy only after the series is finished, so that I wont end up disappointed with something that fizzled out in the end. Scanlations help me figure out which ones I decide to buy- and really, if it weren't for scanlations I would never have thought to look at a manga in the first place.
What do you mean by "if it weren't for scanlations I would never have thought to look at a manga in the first place"? Did you find out about manga by stumbling into a scanslation or a scanslation site/group? 🙂
How big do you think your collection would be once you've gathered more or all of the manga you want? And if it's a big number, I guess it will cost you a lot in shipping (like even more than the book is worth? ^^U) unless you pick up the manga when you stop by Japan or somewhere close to it. Maybe that will be quite a few trips back and forth. 🙂 ^^U
Nah, the censoring thing, but also scanlation groups tend to explain better and right on the page if there is something worth noting.
I do buy the raw mangas and I can read them just fine now. I am a very sad case where I actually ended up adding Japanese as a second major (first one architecture), because my hobby got out of hand. One of the things I was reading was dropped and I couldn't find translations anywhere, so I went out of my way and actually started learning so I could go buy the books and translate them myself. But I do feel responsible to the mangaka and want to support them with my purchases.
I originally got into manga when I could no longer wait for the next anime episodes to be aired. I had a friend (bf of the one who introduced me to anime) who teased me about knowing what happened, then showed me the wonderful world of manga scanlation. Honestly, without scanlations I would have never noticed manga at all.
Right now, I have on my to buy list the remainder of Gakuen Alice, Kimi wa Petto, Vagabond, Ouran Host Club, Paradise Kiss, Death Note, Gokusen, all of One Piece (ouch), the Full Metal Panic novels, Ghost Hunt novels. Also add to the maybe list Skip Beat, Perfect Girl Evolution, Special A, Blade of the Immortal and Monster. So... thats quite a few, added all up.
I am still a University student, and struggling to make rent so I haven't been able to make any large purchases recently. I have a few websites that I trust though, and the shipping isn't all that bad when done in large batches- maybe by the end of this summer I will be able to order another 20 - 30, and the shipping on those shouldnt be more than $50 or so. It still comes out cheaper than buying the translated ones in the bookstores here. But even then, its better when I can get it through friends. As I am a Japanese Language major, I know a lot of people who travel back and fourth, and I can give them cash to pick up a few for me now and then. Its nice.
Oh, and when I went to Japan, I spoke Japanese to the vendors. But I only had two semesters of the language at the time, so it was really difficult. More than once I walked into a porn shop and took waay too long to figure out I was out of place. I must have looked very funny taking so long to read the spines to figure out what section I was in... but it paid off. I stuck it out and found good prices. And learned away to stay away from isles with unnecesary amounts of pink.

I actually haven't bought any in a while, but I don't download.
I go away and suddenly the spammers are the mods. Okay, I can adjust to that, but... Gorath?! And what's up with Mam's not being the top poster?

where i'm from,it's really really rare to be able to buy a manga.
they either are non-existant or cost a fortune.
so the answer no,even online it's hard for me because i hate waiting so long for it to arrive to my house when i can simply read the whole story in a day while online.

I don't own any US releases.
I do own a couple of series in Korean though.
They are all Korean releases of manga (not manhwa) that weren't being translated into English.

Won't bother to count but I have U.S. releases for Slam Dunk and Ragnarok: Into the Abyss and Hong Kong releases of Suzuka and Naruto up to vol.33

Lately I started buying it. It's nice to buy a volume of manga that hasn't been scanlated in the whole yet and get to know the answers.

I only buy raws.
More manga sold in the USA = more pressure for them to close scanlation groups.

But unfortunatly there is only one shop that sells manga where I live, so there isn't much to choose from.. And I'm not so rich to buy whole sieries that cost more than 10-20 USD..... horrible... 😔 🤢
