That doesn't make sense. No one who votes can be either right or wrong. Its all a matter of personal opinion.

Agreed, it is a nice idea to try and help equalize the ratings on some but in general I look at ratings as people attraction to the manga not if it really was worth the rating. It helps me to see them extremes and plus I like using them. Neutralizing the 1 rating would only take away from someones personal voting opinion and how fair is that?

I think that keeping the 1's are fine. I've always thought that the rating system is to let people know how good a manga is. By "good", I mean fun to read. Obviously different people will have different preferences, so some will like to rate a manga as 10, while others give a 1.

I see nothing wrong with that, since it would apply to all manga equally, and I use the rating to compare the different manga, so their place in the rankings shouldn't change.

Personally, I don't think I've ever given a 1 to a manga. To me, a 1 would mean that a manga is so bad I would throw it down in disgust, and would be so horrified I would try to forget I even read such a piece of crap. But I don't think a manga that bad would ever be published. I also try not to rate incomplete series or series on my unfinished list. But as I said, different people will have their own way of doing things. I don't think my way of doing things would be entirely fair either, since that means I almost never give a bad rating. And if everyone was just like me, wouldn't I be misled into thinking every manga in the database is great?

The only way I can think of that would be fair, would be to give everyone's votes a different weight. I mean, if someone gave a manga a rating of 7, when he/she mostly only gives 1-5, then that should mean a lot more than someone who rates it as 10, when he/she almost always rate a manga as 10.

ya this is a good idea. i think there is such a system, forget what it is called though. imdb uses it i think.

How about purging all votes, putting up a description for what each number represents at the voting area, and then having everyone revote; sort of like what they do on anidb (changed to reflect manga reading):

Ranking goes from 1 to 10. Please vote based on CONTENT and NOT on scanlation quality. You can imagine each rank as follows:
* 1 - unreadable / despise the manga as a whole
* 2 - hopeless
* 3 - very bad
* 4 - bad
* 5 - decent (neither bad nor good)
* 6 - fine
* 7 - good (recommended)
* 8 - very good
* 9 - great (must read)
* 10 - sugoi (masterpiece)

I think if people saw what the numbers meant, then the voting would be more representative of how people feel about the manga. You could also make it mandatory for people who vote either 1 or 10 to justify their reason for their vote, if people are afraid of giving away too many 1's or 10's.

For rankings of one, I'd expect the person to never read that manga again and to basically never finish it/put it in the unfinished list.

IMO rating systyem should be changed to 4-10 level. Thus those who want to give a bad rating can do so, but its effect to the average would decrease a little.
Anyway, I haven't yet found a manga that would be worth less than 4...

i agree that it should not be taken away because it is good to have the choice and free will of actually giving a manga a 1. With all honesty there are few people who give a manga a 1 because the hate it that much though. On manga chare every manga on the site has a bunch of votes of 1's. The use of the 1 should be for a contrivercial purpose not to agitate people that actually like the manga. I dislike naruto and love one piece, but that doesn't mean that i would go and give naruto a 1 just because of how many hates one piece has because of it. It is it's ow nwork of art and i would give it a 7. if millin of copies of a manga are seeling i highly dought it deserves a one. Maybe the people who give mangas one should actually come up with thier own manga draw it and let us trash it apart with rash unreasonable opinions and see how retarded and unfair it is to be blind to it.

1 - bad (one read thru is more than enuff)
2 - meh (neither good nor bad - wouldn't re-read)
3 - good (will re-read at least once)
4 - great (will re-read more than once)

thats all the ppl need.

The ratings should give a general idea if the manga is liked or not so having options from 1-10 is kinda a waste of coding lines. I agree with m64 on this that you should have between 3 and 5 options for this any more would be a waste.

But you can have a series that you love to the point of insanity and never re-read it. I never re-read anything, but there are a lot of series that I thought were really good.

just cause you choose not to re-read something doesn't have any bearing on what other ppl think or do...

its about telling ppl what you think of the manga... notice how there are still numerical and one word descriptions... its about giving as much information to the person who is thinking of reading the series.

Just out of curiosity, because I do agree to an extent, shouldn't that also apply to people who give 10s? I mean, if nothing sucks that badly nothing should be that amazing either.

(no longer directed at quoted statement): I think I did a poor job of explaining this before, so I'm going to try again. People's ratings tend to be based on their opinions rather than the actual quality of the work. So if someone hates something, regardless of whether or not it is actually a quality work, they're likely to give it a one, and the same goes for rabid fanaticism that results in a 10. People do rate things differently, not only according to their personal tastes but also varying levels of harshness and objectivity. I don't think there's really anything wrong with doing so, and even the current ratings system adequately shows how much people like something or dislike something. You can always dismiss low votes as people being angry towards something or attempting to make a statement of some kind if you want, but ultimately the ratings are still going to more or less accurately display the degree to which something is popular. It may not reflect the actual quality but it still shows how much of a following something has.

to a certain exent yes...i agree with the 10's cus sumtimes i read a manga that has a crap load of 10's yet still kinda didn't do it for me...yet alot of mangas with a hella lot of 1's are my fav manga...you just enforced my point that ratings are...kinda crap...i think it would b better if a person or a group of people handdled ratings...that wayif i like what they like i'll read what they reccomend....and if i don't like what they like i'll read what they hate...in that case it's a win win situation
