I missed the Death Note reference...
There were two references to Death Note, actually. The first was when Nagi is putting her manga back on the bookshelf. You can see that she drew in a notebook entitled "Death Note". That's the obvious one.
Later on, when she's plotting on being cold to Hayate, she says "Just as planned!" with a sneer on her face. This is also straight out of Death Note, from the scene when Kira resumes possession of the notebook.
The first one was so clear it didn't need a note (you can read the words "Death Note" with no problem), and I thought the second, while somewhat subtle, would be recognizable to fans of the series.

Lol! I see them now...
I'm really not the visual kind... so I missed the first one. It took me 1 year after I finished wipeout 2097 for example to notice that the type of the weapon I get depended on the color of the power up node I run on... (And it was my sister that told me about it lol).
The second one on the other hand I noticed it, but I didn't think about it to much... Because without the first reference it would have felt as if I said that bleach have a Death Note reference when they talk about shinigami (or vice versa)... I mean Kirra isn't the only guy in a manga that made that kind of sneer.
But once you see the first reference it becomes obvious that it was the intention of the author.

You forgot the Initial D refrence. Remember the part about the highway? INERTIA DRIFT! And the car he was racing was called Mofu-pa something like that. Which is almost close to Tofu-ma

Is the two page title page for chapter 50 a reference of something?
For some reason it reminds me of a Rurouni Kenshin picture but I can't find it.
I remember a detective conan style title page too from a previous chapter i think in volume 3 or 4.

The anime isn't to par with the manga.
Maybe not, a couple of the plot changes really bugged me*, but I think they captured the feel of the characters perfectly, and the animation seems high-quality too, so I'll keep watching. 🙂
*specifically, they avoided saying the gangster-persons were going to take his organs; Maria didn't run Hayate over with her bike; and they cheapened the scene where Hayate jumps on the kidnappers car hood, by taking the blood out of it.

You're probably going to want something like photobucket or imageshack.us to host that.

I wasn't saying it was bad or mediocre. I just really wished the anime was not on as a kids morning show (I believe it has a morning timeslot) which is why we get the edited version. I still enjoy the manga immensely and I'm definitely still watching this.
Most of the extra jokes are not too good but the narrator and the other voices are great.

Of course.
Morning slot? Don't those usually have little clocks stamped on the video? Or maybe those are only the really early ones...

I doubt it. It's hard to see Gurenn Lagann as a morning show. I could be completely wrong...

So it seems the manga sounds better than the anime...I'll probably check it out eventually 😀
Stupid bookstore doesn't have volume one >:-(
It seems like a kids' show, but some parts surprise me, like "is that scene allowed on public television? 😲 " It's hard to tell if this manga is really a shounen or not...

For those who've purchased beyond volume 2 from Viz, have they gotten around to providing explanations or are those still out?
