This topic is for everyone to explain why they hate (or love to hate) Harmonix games (Guitar Hero, Rock Band). You dont actually have to hate the game though. Here's an example of what I mean.

I hate Rock Band because I can no longer listen to Welcome Home from Coheed and Cambria without wanting to play the song. 😀

plus, the music from all of them sucks.

i think there was only like, three good songs from all of those games.

I like video games because you can do, or imagine you do, thinks that you could never do in RL.

I like fantasy games, where you can discover unreal worlds; and war games, where you can shoot people with no social and legal consequences.

But playing a fake guitar in your room, when you could play a REAL guitar in your room, it's just plain stupid.

If kids used the time they play guitar hero, learning to play a real instrument, they would end being master guitar players. And there are bands contests everywhere all the time.

Why not learn to play the real thing, go to a real contest and then have the whole "guitar hero" experience in RL?

I don't hate Harmonix Games, mostly because they give more variety to the video game industry, and it opens up doors for a more mainstream audiences to start playing video games. Imagine if they never existed? Anyway just posted to answer something...

I play the guitar in real life, but I also play guitar hero. I think it's because guitar hero is very rewarding. You can hear yourself play well only after a few hours of picking up the game. You feel good about yourself. How long did it take me to feel good about my real guitar playing? I can't even remember. It can only take you an hour to play a perfect song in guitar hero---and you have accompaniment. It took me months to play the same song in a real guitar. I love playing them in both.

Practicing the guitar for real can be sometimes annoying, especially those finger dexterity exercises you have to do everyday. On the other hand, practicing guitar hero is always fun.

Guitar Hero is a party game that you can play with your friends. Real guitar practice is something you usually do alone.

I think people like playing guitar hero the same way why everyone else likes video games. Instant gratification. In video games (may it be guitar hero or a traditional game), you get rewarded faster, and with lesser effort required than it is in real life. We all know how that can be very attractive.

You also have to consider that Harmonix games are one of the few next gen games that actually has replay value to it. A lot of games advertise that now but very few actually hold true.

As you play a real instrument, you should know that the more you practice, the easier it gets to learn new songs. But I think that taking months to play a song in a guitar is a little excessive, you might want to look for alternative learning methods....

True, but I have this bad habit of counter-arguing things from time to time. There are benefits to playing a real instrument. But you have to keep in mind that we are talking about a game here. And that said game is played by professional guitarists.

Wow youre so right. i also like shooter games though. I guess i should just go out to apply for the army, and kill people in iraq. because the real life application of a videogame is just as, if not more fun, than the videogame.

also that would be constructive. instead of doing a stupid party game, having fun with my friends, i can learn to kneel in the dirt for hours, scared enough to piss my pants, until i finally see someone walk up, where he will either blast my head off or maybe ill manage to put a bullet in his eye at 100 yards.

Exactly, it.is.just.a.game. thats why it doesn't really matter in the long run, now, dont get me wrong, i am not saying that happiness you get from being good at a game, or this game in particular, is not good, or worth the time, but, i seriously just dont see the point of a game where you Pretend to play a instrument, it makes no sense to me.

i can understand shooters, cause, who doesn't want to kill people without consequences, or RPGs, cause who doesn't want to be in that kind of world when the world we live in is so dismal, but when you can actully play an instrument....
it just seems....crazy.

How is murdering people and putting your life at risk constructive and of real value in any way?

I should have added that you don't put your life at risk, but my point was that you can't do that in RL or at least it wouldn't be a wise life choice to try and do it.
