You register on the site, then you install the Last Fm Client and it sits down in the system tray and any time you listen to a track in Winamp, WMP, iTunes, etc. It will upload the ID3 tag info to your profile on Last.fm after a week of listening it will start to build of charts of your favourite artists, fav tracks, albums and then start to recommend new artists based on what you have already listened to. Then you can join groups about different bands and lot of other stuff. And then it also has all the usual social networking things like friends, shoutbox and neighbours who have similar musical interest to you.
You can see an example of what charts look like after a while at my page

Didn't really use it when I first got it since i didn't understand how it worked. But then I actually tried it and "Voila!". Good for finding new bands/singers.

I've had mine since May and I have 40,000 plays.
Not counting the 2 weeks when I had to send my computer back to HP.

About 1 and 1/2 years... though it was before you could import listening history from iTunes/WMP, so it would be a bit larger if I had...

Mine includes listening history since January. I had more plays on my old comp.
