I'm in search of inspiration in order to fill up my new sketchbook with lots of interesting characters. This also ties into a great discussion question!!!
so... Which manga do you think has the best character design, their hair, costume, etc. Personality does not matter :]

Hiroaki Samura's Blade of the Immortal for overall character design.

I love the character designs in Valkyrie Profile, especially Lenneth in her armor. Hrist looks cool too. Oh, and I can't forget the various gods like Freya (?) and Loki. Odin looks like he's wearing pajamas though. 🤣 For Valkyrie Profile: The Dark Alchemist, I like Lezard's character design. I personally think it looks better than from the prequel.

I'll all for Kenshin from Ruruoni Kenshin. He's unique and well-rounded and deep.
Kyoko from Skip Beat! She shows a HUGE range of emotions, and they're reflected in both her body language and facial features. Just looking at a picture of her, without knowing the context, can tell you a lot.

The only thing I find good about bleach is the character designs, specially in the last arcs, really like the arrancar stuff

Bleach has good character designs, at the very least. Kinda unique art, but it's good.
Further, I'll just direct you to a couple of good artists: Oh Great and Kawashita Mizuki. The latter has excellent female characters in particular, while the former is merely a god among artists.

Seconding Bleach and Eureka 7 and throwing in Naruto and D. Gray. They've got large casts, but each character's unique enough to stand out. Plus points for their being consistency in group designs (some elements repeat for the captains or konaha nin's or exorcists or...)
For shoujo's, Ai Yazawa's good-she's got intricate styling that fits her characters personality, and really pull's the subculture she's working with into her manga. Clamp's a mixed bag-within manga's the designs are pretty solid, but stretched across the multiverse it starts looking repetitive.

That is more general, not just character design. It also has to do with the general aesthetic quality of the scenes.
Kurohime from Kurohime, or any of the other witches/goddesses.
Also, Masataka Takayanagi and Aya/Maya Natsume from Tenjho Tenge come to mind (as does Mitsoumi, but I hate him too much)

Also, URASAWA Naoki also has an awesome range of characters, and is really good as drawing distinct, different nationalities, especially in Monster. His Japanese characters actually look Japanese!
