Under the penname of Yahiro Kuon, he won the secondary prize in the 19th Youth Manga Awards in 1988.

His mangas are known to be filled with explicit violence and gore, as well as "softcore" sexual situations, which is very evident through Gantz and Hen. In an interview conducted with an anime magazine in 2005, Hiroya stated that he "adores girls with big breasts".
