Is about the best thing this series have going for. Unfortunately the LN is filled with boring and irrelevant chapters that I have to give this series a 8.

Still worth reading for the couple scenes that are done well, but expect long, drawn out arcs and pointless chapters.

So, to save the world, you (either its the Gods, or the summoner fault, mostly the author) decide to summon, exclusively 4 Japanese student.

Japanese student...

Even pure Japanese, instead of other cross country candidates, it was already enough to brake the suspension of disbelief, but then, they decided to go for students? Really? Yeah, they do play VR-RPG. But so does Zelda William and Kim Ung-Yong if they live in a parallel world where Virtual Reality actually exist.

So instead of going for someone like them. You know, college educated VR player, with a good track record of not being a jerk, they went for immaturity. That would help win the war.

Come on...

At first I was of the opinion that the story is just about pettiness and revenge. It was like that at the beginning. It was annoying. He winds up in this alternate universe where everyone either betrays him, condemns him, shuns him, or treats him like crap. All for no apparent reason whatsoever. This is what will pull you into the story. You'll want to see him kick the sh*theads' hindquarters. When he does, it is DELICIOUS. Shortly afterwards though, there'll be another betrayal/framing and then you'll want to see a re-revenge. Rinse and repeat. It's hard to put down the novel because of this.

But thankfully around volume 4 the author adds a bit more depth to the story so if you get fed up by all the shittyness(like I did), atleast wait until then before you drop it. A reason was given to all the petty cruelty he receives which makes me a lot more hopeful for this series. It still feels like a bit of band-aid to its gaping flaws but it holds together nicely.

Some flaws:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The world the author built still feels too generic and weak to stand on its own. The game-like system is confusing, unimaginative, and unbalanced. Even if the shield is the only 'weapon' he can equip, its like a magical Swiss Army knife. He can do anything and everything with it, like brew potions, forge and enchant, he even uses it for mining =_=. Then there are these two dimensional characters. The antagonists are more annoying than worrying. Those who aren't against him adores and worships him.

The powerful force that is revenge keeps the story working, anything else is just extra. So if you want a VRMMO-like LN, and have read all the rest already, this'll do. If not try something else first. If you want an occasional dose of sweet vengeance then this perfect ^^

It's hard for me to say much without spoiling anything. But like the description says, everyone basically looks down on him because he doesn't have a weapon and he even gets framed/betrayed. No one believes him though, so he loses his trust in everyone. But something happens, and....Just read it. I haven't read something I liked this much in a long time. If you read to the end of volume 1, I think you'll probably be hooked too.

I don't think I've ever been quite as satisfied with a protagonist's revenge on their foe as I have been in this novel. Sooo satisfying, this work does an excellent job of making you hate the antagonists' guts just as much as the MC, and that makes his revenge feel great.

The main theme for the beginning is BETRAYAL so expect the manga to have a lot of bitter moments for the MC, but as there are downs there are also ups (revenge). The MC betrayed stripped of rank and powerless can only burn with vengeance as he curses the medieval fantasy world he is tasked with protecting it has some delicious revenge moments that make it a favorite of mine I highly recommend

Not a weapon but a shield

The story is extremely good, we got 4 heores (1 hero(shield) and 3 retards(sword, lance, bow) that get summoned from modern age to a fantasy world where RPG settings seems to be normal and such things as level and status windows are implemented in real life. The heroes are supposed to fight against monster that come from another dimension and free the world. But for some reason the shield hero is hated and then framed time and time again while he persists the hard times trying to move forward and go back to his world but first of all survive the attacks of both the monsters and the people of the kingdom that want him death.
Not to mention that by being a hero of the shield, he can ONLY USE the shield, and his power attack is 1 so he needs comrades in arms that do the damage for him, but with the current situation he cannot trust anybody in the kingdom so he buys a slave (girl) and trains her in combat.
