Yet another maid-tastic manga from Kaoru Mori, "Shirley" is an evocative glimpse into the daily life of winsome, 13-year-old Shirley, a maid in turn-of-the-century England. It is often compared to Yokahama Kaidashi Kikou, as both mangas feature languid pacing, atmospheric backgrounds, and a female main character who works in a cafe. If you like YKK, have a weakness for "cute," and/or have a maid fetish, this is the manga for you. No hentai, no fanservice, zero, zip, nada. Just pure maid-tastic moemoe. (From IIChan Translation Group.)

* It has no connection with the other maid story of the author, also Emma is a Victorian Maid, but Shirley is a Edwardian Maid.

* Volume 1 Includes two other stories unrelated:
1. An Afternoon with Nelly and Me
2. Mary Banks
"Mary Banks" tells about a maid with a Master who loved playing pranks on his servants. Frogs, spraying them with water, trip ropes and other forms of foolishness were all she could look forward to any day. But when her employer passes away unexpectedly, what will happen to Mary Banks?

* Shirley or Shirley Medison/Madison?
Shirley and the oneshots in volume 1 were first published as fanzine (doujinshi) around 2000-2001, at that time the title was "Shirley Medison". In 2003 the first volume was released by Enterbrain publisher as just "Shirley", CMX later translated her name as "Shirley Madison". In 2006, the author decided to continue her work with Shirley and released two chapters under the title "Shirley Medison", these were followed by 2 more in 2010, then another 2 in 2013 and again 2 in 2014. Finally in 2014 all previous "Shirley Medison" chapters were released in "Shirley" volume 2.

Gentle friendship

This is a story about two typically reserved English women -- a teashop proprietor and her maid. The lady is beautiful and seems disinclined to marry. She knows how to run a business and charm her customers. Otherwise, she is intermittently scatterbrained. She is very kind to her young maid Shirley, who is very hard-working and earnest. As the chapters succeed each other, a series of typical days and evenings of such an employer-employee pair unroll. Nothing very dramatic happens, but it does gradually become apparent (now at chapter 8) that little Shirley is very happy and relieved to have such a boss. The two are gradually becoming a viable duo that works well for getting on in the world.

For many, perhaps most, people, this kind of sedate slice of life story is what their lives consist of. And there may be great feeling within that quiet package.

I love this series.

An excellent classic one; it's up to my expectation after reading Emma. The old lovely and unique "English" artstyle, and simple, soft yet fascinating plot. Highly recommended for those who has an "old English style" fetish like me!

Too bad it's just one volume.

Though as simple as the story unfolds with no much complexity.. the artwork alone was appealing. Somehow, a glimpse that is really interesting to ponder on..
