The main character and her brother are both complete morons, it is very aggravating, and it is very hard to consider the possibility that they don't have some form of mental retardation.

Miyuki seems so clueless of wats actually going on about her. The stupid chick (Choko) she thinks is her "best friend" is the one who's ruining her life! Her "benefactor", Madame Othori is only using her. even her stupid coach is using her! Everyone's leaching the idiot. I think the only one who's actually on her side is Sakurada and he's her debt collector! I hope she gives up on that useless guy, and gets together with Sakurada. He's done sooo much more to help her and seems to care about her more! Choko can have that useless, whimpy, rich guy!

I know everyone says this manga pisses people off. It's true. However, I find this manga more hilarious than depressing. It's hilarious in a sense that the overwhelming forces our protagonist had to overcome are stupid idiots. Almost every antagonist especially the spectators/reporters are so stupid that it's funny. Like stupid South Park Characters.

Page-art is quite expressive and most expressively adds to the stupidities or absurdities of crying, snickering, laughing, etc., of the whole c-a-r-i-c-a-t-u-r-i-s-t-i-c manga, but, besides that, nothing impressive.

Umino’s brother leaves her with a huge debt and now she’s got to play tennis – again – in order to repay every yen of it. So… uh… what do you have to do to in order to loose 250 million yen?

Characters are made of vices, sins and bloody shitty excesses, amazingly, it’s not ero-guro-nansensu, amazingly.

I title it: | The most annoying manga of all time! |

Or just

| An expensive feast for masochists: o, we just love da paiiiiin!!! |

Even for Urasawa, this is pretty damn depressing. I have read considerable bits of Monster, 20th Century Boys, etc., but this really hit me badly. I think if I continue reading this, I would end up losing all faith in humanity and go amok.

happy was the first manga i ever saw. when my dad came back from a business trip to japan he brought a magazine(?) featuring the 201st chapter. there was some english in there that helped me figure out what it was about, but other then that i was clueless, and still am. however i remembered the name and reading it now i recognize the more outrageous characters. I can't wait till i can read chapter 201 in english, arg!!!!

I started reading this manga because I thought Happy! would make me happy. Instead, it made me more angry and frustrated. However, it's still a good manga, just don't expect it to cheer you up. It shows you just how unfair life can be, with everything stacked against you.

The protagonist is unbelievably naive, and her family is the worst. I have no idea how her siblings turned into such spoiled brats when they're so poor, but they are. The only one of her siblings that's worth anything is the youngest, because he's a good judge of character.

Happy is a manga written to piss you off. Over and over again, the Urasawa tries to invoke the emotion of annoyance. He is very sucessful. It made it difficult to continue reading at some points. Bad things kept on happening. There are too many ***holes, *****es and dumb***es. People are continuing to get "played." It is very annoying.

[edit by mod, edited for language]

Most characters are annoying and hatable. Fore example, the "mama's boy" who wants to help and COULD help if he weren't such a "mama's boy." Miyuki's younger siblings are brats(... well, they are allowed to be brats because they are young but brats are brats). The only likable characters are the mobster dude and Kikuko. Miyuki, although not hatable is not very likable because she keeps on getting "played" like a fool. You feel sorry for her, that is all.

Annoying as it may be, I am still interested in the story. I'll keep on reading; I'll just skim through the annoying parts.

A journey towards happiness

For most readers, Happy! is anything but.

However, award-winning mangaka Naoki Urasawa takes his audience through a deep and emotional journey to understanding happiness - in the genius of his characters, world and art.

While he adopts a seemingly pessimistic view of the professional tennis world, he does not under-estimate the misfortune that lies ahead of a girl with a debt and a poor man's dream; nor does he sitfle the best and worst of human potential.

Happy! can be truly discomfitting as it evokes true human emotions: sympathy and glee, hatred and anger, despair and (most beffitingly) hope. In fact, it requires the reader to look beyond the inevitable emotion to fully appreciate the deeper meaning of being "Happy!" - for each of the characters, and how their happiness affects those around them.

Thought-provoking and emotive, Happy! is just one work among Urasawa's great works.

A must-read for the serious reader.
