Interesting manga but the last 2 volumes really made my brain go squish

I still wish that the lpose story ends were tied up more neatly. The last two volumes feel like everything is happenong all at once. Which honestly ruined it a bit for me. However overall it was a good read

So Far, Just Okay

Firstly regarding the release: right now I'm at chapter 15 of a total of 51 scanlated. To read beyond this, you'll need to chuck five bucks at the author via his patreon which is totally reasonable. In fact it's got to be the cheapest offer I've seen for a whole series.

Now as for the content itself? It's simply not blowing me away. I looked into this due to its high rating here. The premise has a load of interesting nuances, but the problem arises once we look past them. At it's core, this is just an isekai. In an isekai, the main character is whisked away from the world they know into a different world. In this new world, they typically either use the knowledge from their previous life to gain an advantage in this new world, or through some special means gain new talents and/or abilities as a part of the deal. Jin falls into the former category, but the twist is the world he is transported to is Earth 138 years in the past and the skill he brings with him is modern medicine. Jin is a talented neurosurgeon.The series, aside from the initial time travel, is grounded in reality. You won't find any magic spells or fantasy creatures. The adversaries here are the illnesses and injuries of the time and the struggle to deal with them without modern tools or colleagues with similar knowledge.

The more rational minded may struggle initially to suspend disbelief. I found it particularly amusing that Jin insists on sterilizing his tools in boiling water and seemed to completely ignore the concept of washing one's hands. Doctors washing their hands dramatically increased patient mortality rates when introduced, though it wasn't even fully accepted in America until the 1980's! This may be a culture thing, though, because living in Japan you'll often find there's no soap in the public restrooms... Back on track, I also found it difficult to believe that his methods would be so readily accepted, but this could have been the author's decision to not get caught up in that aspect of the story.

I have two main problems that I can't move past as easily as the problems I went over above. First, Jin comes off as a bit of a marty stu. He never seems to do anything wrong, he seems to be liked by everyone even those who dislike him at first, and in fact really doesn't have much in the way of character or personality at all. If you think you disagree, please try to describe him in a way that would differentiate him from any other doctor.

Next, like most isekai, the initial catalyst for the story (the thing that whisks Jin away) becomes mostly irrelevant as the story goes on. At a somewhat early point in the story there's a hint of some development on this front, but it gets swept back under the rug. This plot point is the main drive of my interest in the story, and its lack of presence means my interest continues to wane as time passes. Of secondary interest is what ramifications Jin's presence and progress in the past will have in the world.

I think what it boils down to is a lack of feeling true adversity for the protagonist. It never really feels like he's going to be in danger of failing, and the stakes involved feel low. After all, anyone at all he manages to save is a net positive. Unless he goes insane and starts a killing spree which admittedly I would not see coming, he's already "won" in a sense.

For now I'll continue reading. If I make it up to chapter 51 I'll buy the rest on patreon, and I'll edit my review here. If not, you can safely assume I lost interest and moved on.

Decent but becomes formulaic and repetitive

The series is enjoyable but by volume 4, it's becoming more repetitive and thus boring.

The formula for each arc is: asshole guy comes in asking for Minakata-sensei's medical techniques or instruments. After introduction however, the dialogue always continue with "what silly techniques! you're a fraud! fuck off!" Then, some event forces him to go treat that guy or show the effectiveness of his medical instruments. Said antagonist is amazed and enlightened and become a fan of sensei.

Rinse and repeat.

Also, there's just too much uninteresting technical jargon every 3-4 page; walls of boring text everywhere.

Another major flaw is that some problems in this story can be easily solved but makes it overly dramatic.
For example, the doctor needs to administer a relatively small amount of concentrated antibiotic for a girl in critical condition due to vaginal infection. A simple solution would be to build a small temporary laboratory to just produce a small amount that's need for the one girl. However, the series over dramatize by requiring to revamp an entire factory but the doctor has no money to do so... You don't need to revamp an entire factory for just a small, concentrated amount of antibiotics.

The series is overrated. The medical history and knowledge is presented accurately for those interested in the health profession but the execution of the story is poorly done at times.

I read it until volume 16 (physical tankobon) and it's extremely respectable
with the art, story, medical research, etc.

Shame the scanlation is slow on this one.

it is ridiculous how deadly small impacts are on this things. if you so much as bump an old lady on the street you and her are both going to pop a lung and get blood build up inbetween your skull and brain

I really like how this time travelling manga does not dwell on romance, but rather on the time period and how the doctor manages to change the time period.

For a historical time travelling manga, this is a first of its genre. It's a must read!!!

I really liked this manga. A big plus is that this is a time slip manga. I coincidentally found out about this when I read a similar work called "Nobunaga no Chef" because I needed another manga to read. I love that you get to learn so many things in the medical field that you don't know about without research. I've learned many things to prevent and counter diseases from this manga. It must take extensive research to create this manga.

It sucks that its been almost 3 months since the last release(chapter 28). It must be really hard to translate this manga because there are many medical terms you need to translate; you might even need to research some of the diseases to help the readers understand.

Overall it's a great manga. If you like time slip genres, you will like this.

I agree with the reviews below me as the series is a masterpiece in terms of research, art, characterization, writing and the lead as a man in his 30s with a beard! Isn´t that great? Most astonishing of all is how well topics like emancipation and prostitution are handled. Period manga sometimes stumble here and go for cheap thrills but not here as the writer bothered to give a me a real female lead and not the Yamato nadeshiko one would first expect.
No wonder the series won the Tezuka but don´t expect a light or frankly pleasant read. The series further features nudity and strong violence but the high amount of death and suffering shouldn't please everyone. I have literally no criticisms so i will stop now. Hopefully the author´s Ryuu - Ron (9/10) will be scanlated too and he is a quality act who now has my undivided attention. Other quality medical manga are Tezuka´s very own Black Jack (8,5/10 and the the 90s ova is pure bliss) / Hidamari no Ki (8,5/10) and the equal flawless Monster (10/10).

Like everyone has said, this manga is great!
The art is perfect for a seinen.
The progress is steady and the story is thrilling. But lately, Jin hasnt failed yet which is a bit boring.
I dont know how Jin, a surgeon, has knowledge about every single illness that occurs, is that normal these days?
But that is made up for with romance, supernatural and hopefully one day he goes abroad with more adventures.
This manga is very informative and no doubt the author has a wide knowledge of history and medicine/surgery.
I'm glad EG scans picked this up because they update quickly and regularly. I feel sorry for them because not just anyone can translate all these medical terms.

Read 21 chapters in one night. It's very good. I would read more but it's not scanlated any further. I hope Easy Going Scans keeps working on this as I see this becoming a popular manga.

There really is no more to say, it's interesting from chapter one on, just give it a chance.
