Good Elements Mixed with Terrible Story Telling
Rating: 4.0 / 10.0
by decisions

Naruto is a story I have terribly mixed feelings about, especially since I devoted a lot of time in the past to writing fanfiction for it... back when I still liked the series.

The most addicting thing about Naruto is the "Naruverse." There is just so much potential in the Naruto world. You have ninja magic that covers a BROAD spectrum of abilities, you have a few deviants in Konoha (Naruto's home town), you have "missing-nin" who betrayed Konoha (most notably men by the names of Orochimaru and Uchiha Itachi), you have demon magic, you have enemy nations who are not on good terms with Konoha, and you have an evil organization bent on world domination.

Wow. Kishimoto spared no expense in setting up a world that would give him virtually unlimited storytelling options. There ARE some inconsistencies, specifically revolving around technology, but aside from that, you can easily get addicted to the Naruverse.

The problems arise in the storytelling. Naruto can be divided into two parts, each I will give thought into separately.

Part 1 of Naruto sets the stage in a very typical shounen way, with the difference that he is hated because of a demon sealed inside of him that everyone fears. He has a rival, an emotionally disturbed kid whose entire clan was massacred by his elder brother (the aforementioned Uchiha Itachi killed them all). They go through trialsand tribulations and appear to change and grow. Naruto starts growing up from the kid he once was and starts becoming a powerful ninja, while Sasuke is faced with choices regarding his revenge and his friendship.

Part 2 is where the story totally breaks down. Kishimoto throws all the character development out the window and changes characters into what he wants them to be at this point using a a 3 year time jump as the excuse. Character personalities in some characters have completely reverted back and in other characters seem different in ways that don't make sense. For reasons I cannot tell, the story stops focusing on developing characters and starts hyping them instead. We're TOLD that technique X or ability Y is super powerful and nobody can perform it except character Z and nobody can stop it no matter who they are. In this way, "S-class" ninjas are given an "S-class" shield by Kishimoto, which is only broken down by convenient plot devices that destroy characterization.

Rating: 4/10.

I'm fine with the cliche shounen elements so long as the storytelling is good enough. Part 1's storytelling was enough to keep me from bemoaning the problems with the series. Part 2 lost it.

Kishimoto is a Good Mangaka...

I'm quite convinced that Kishimoto is a really skillful mangaka, but somethings are like restraints to him, like the shounen genre itself. It's quite common to see people complaining about this manga, but they can't tell why they don't stop reading it. I'd guess it's because Kishimoto can hold their attentions and make they wonder "what'll happen next?". They just don't realize it.

Naruto is a manga that probably makes WSJ earn a lot of money and that's why it keeps going for a long time. But I'm quite amazed by the fact that even being a big series, it didn't lost its coherence up to now, something that's really common to shounen series.

Naruto is a cliche manga? Of course it's cliche! Look at the magazine it's published! It's meant to be read by people who want to see cliche shounen! Its target public are teenagers, not young adults who have read a lot of other shounens in their lives!

In general, the art is good (for a weekly series, it's awesome), the plot and pace are steady and it's really addicting depending on your taste.

Some of the scores are ridiculous and uncalled for. Naruto might be overrated by many, but even more so now it's being underrated. I've seen mangas that deserve 1's. Naruto isn't one of them.

Naruto became a trend, so much so that it's become so vogue to hate Naruto and claim it is horrible, and in that, Naruto hate has also become a trend.

Naruto is cliche shounen, but so is Bleach, Fairy Tail, HunterxHunter, and the list goes on. But I still think it still delivers entertainment, I still love the characters, I still enjoy the fights, I still like the strong panels, and it's a good download for a decent story. Remove yourself from the fandom politics and elitist snobbery, both inside and outside the fandom, and you'll generally enjoy yourself.

Like it or Hate it

This manga seems to be really polarizing, you either really enjoy it or you think it's beyond stupid. I personally am one who enjoys it, but I'll admit, there are some chapters that make you think "why am I reading this again?"

Many people that complain that it should have ended awhile ago but for the scope and the amount of just everything that this manga has in it, making it end sooner would have just left too many untied ends. Currently, you can feel the story coming to a close but in a way that also answers the questions we've all been wondering.

Overall, I give Naruto a 9 for a few reasons.

One: action scenes. Too many brilliant manga have been ruined by poorly executed fight scenes that have so many things going on that no one can figure out what just happened, Naruto typically maintains a good balance between uncluttered drawing and dialogue.

Two: Characters. We've all read manga in which every other figure looks exactly like someone who appeared two pages ago, minus maybe a different hair color. In this manga, differentiating between two characters is easy: every person has a distinct look and all the main characters can be recognized with no second guessing. One other thing that I think is rather rare is the fact that parents/siblings/family members actually look related to each other.

Three: it's in depth. I'm not sure if this is just me but I find it cool when I can see a picture of a character and instantly know a huge chunk of info regarding who the person is, who their family is, what they can do, and how they tie into the story. The further and further you read into the story the more you realize just how massive Kishimoto's ninja world is.

There are only a few things wrong with Naruto:
1. Sasuke
2. Sasuke
4. They don't act like ninjas
5. When I see an obnoxious brat running around in an orange jumpsuit, I don't think of ninjas. I think of somebody who broke out of jail!
6. Wow. How ninja. Running around in flashy, colorful outfits casting magic spells
7. Narutards are watching you
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
8. Only the cool people (Hayate, Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Asuma, etc.) die and not the annoying jerkwads (Sasuke, Sasuke, Sasuke, Sasuke, Sasuke, etc.)

9. It drags and drags and drags....
10. They talk too damn much

Shounen - Better than most

I wish read this before I read Bleach. I would've saved a lot of my time. People can say what they want but Naruto is simply entertaining. If you wanna complain about plot issues then read Josei manga because shounen manga aren't known for very coherent story lines. Don't get me wrong, I love Naruto's narrative but I guess some people find it hard to accept because of the over the top story arcs. I honestly can't help but think of Harry Potter when I read this simply because of the rich backstory and I think:

This is better than Harry Potter.

Its funny, its emotional, its sad, its interesting and many other things. If someone doesn't like Naruto, its not that there's something wrong with Naruto but rather something is wrong with their perception of what a shounen manga is supposed to be like.

Yes, its long. Yes, it drags at times. But man its worth it!! Because when its good....its REALLY good!!! This perhaps is the only long manga that I would rate at 9/10 because the messages, the characters and the story are something to learn from, both on a personal and an artistic level. Love it!

I like the first 20 volumes but as the series dragged on, the quality decreased as well. New plots keep pop up but many of them don't fit well with the original story thus making it seems a ragged piece of cloth. The fights' quality went down too. In early part most of characters, especially Naruto, have only a limited set of techniques and have to use their brains to maximize their abilities. That is what make their fights interesting to watch. But in later parts, Naruto keeps getting new techies thus previous abilities were rendered useless.

naruto marathon

that's the only way you will be able to enjoy this manga. i just finished my 2 days naruto marathon from the first chapter to the latest 582 chapter. i had had read naruto before until the chuunin exam but dropped this. but now reading this in complete block make the reading better. i am actually quite regretful i dont wait until this manga finish but i got spoilered massively so that's why i read this. anyway, i really do recommend people to read naruto until after it is finish. this is because the fight can get pretty long winded and the excitement of waiting for new chapters will only turn to fatigue, then boredom then you will just drop this manga. however, reading this in one go make the excitement propel you to continue to read and thus you can see the overall plot without getting confused, especially with the shitload of characters.

i do get quite surprised with naruto because i thought it is just a long winding battle manga but actually it is very well written. every technique is grounded in stable rules, he dont just take them out of his ass. there is overarching plot that tie the past to present quite beautifully. the history and the landscape is all meticulously planned out. there is no wasted chapter at all, every mission serve a purpose to progress the plot, or it will tie to the future. i really am just amazed.

the characters are also very interesting and likeable. naruto as a main character dont fail at all. personally i do not like stupid but over determined over protective character, but somehow naruto dont get across too annoying. i hate his stalker tendency with sasuke, but i guess it's okay for the plot. people had been hating on sakura but i do not think she is useless, but her obsession with sasuke is baffling. i also completely empathized with sasuke. i love almost all the characters that have been introduced here, and i love the way that even though they are enemy, the reader and the characters do not hate them.

the art is also the conerstone of this series. every character have distinguishible face, i can easily identified them. i also can even remember their name even with the number of characters because they have very strong identity. they do not just have differing hair style, but their own personality and physical make up. the art is very simple and clear with no unnecessary lines, and it is perfect in its simplicity. it is not beautiful and obstruct the flow of the story but carry the story by presenting it to the reader in easy to digest way.

the fights is also something enjoyable. i read quite a few of battle manga already, but naruto is one of the best. i like the clarity of the fight, i can follow its progression, there is rules and thoughts behind the fight and most of all it is interesting. d gray man for example, have beautiful art but i cant understand the chaotic fight that make me just skip them. one piece have interesting powers but theres no rules in it that anything can happen, the world is not stable. but naruto's universe is stable with foundation, that's why i love the fights.

all in all, i really love this manga and i recommend this to anyone who love a series with good plot, strong cast of characters, great fights and most of all enjoyable story.

This is an amazing manga, and once you get in, you can't get out. What got me into it was the anime, the first three seasons of which were really awesome. When I got into the manga, which was when Shippuden was a couple dozen episodes in, I realized that Naruto hadn't changed AT ALL. He uses the same jutsus over and over again, with various different versions of the same jutsu being used. His attitude somehow always seems to get him in trouble, but it always saves him from danger and people secretly admire him for some unseeable reason. Sasuke is also very annoying. He wasn't even supposed to exist in the manga, but now he takes it over. I get that this is going in a direction that the mangaka has planned out, but I have a feeling that after more than a decade, he's done with this as well. Still, I recommend this for everyone. For the most part, all the other characters aren't so bad.
