Gets Complex But Vaguely Interesting

TLDR: Meh story with slightly sloppy story telling. If you’re looking for a classic shoujo, don’t bother.

Longer version:
The story summary doesn’t give you the proper expectations for the story at all. The story summary sets you up for a basic shoujo so when the other elements come out I felt unprepared for them as a reader, and not in a good way.
It also doesn’t help that for the first book and a half I found myself unattached to any of the characters and really uninterested in the story. The drama was buried, the characters weren’t interesting, and it felt like there was no overarching plot. I forced myself to get through it though and it got vaguely interesting later however not because of the romance. In fact the romance was so far off base that I feel like this shouldn’t even be labeled shoujo.

Both Good and Bad

This is all my opinion

The Good

1. Nice Concept:: The overall story is quite interesting, at least to me. The concept of annihilators and restrainers may be just a complicated version of the typical 'Master-Servant' relationship, but there's something that makes it fresh to me - I can't pinpoint it though.

2. "Some" Cool Characters:: I have to emphasize the awesomeness of the annihilators - they're just really awesome. The main maid - Kazuragi Shii - is a very interesting character as she can switch from an absolute airhead to a badass chick. I cannot wait to see more of her history - like
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
"What is her real identity? If she isn't an annihilator, then what is she exactly?"
. Other than her, I liked the nice Kuchina and his mega-hot annihilator, Tsukiko - they're freaking awesome. Two other characters, the masochist whose name I forgot, the horny 'gay-ish' dude whose name I also forgot and Suou the butler, are quite interesting too.

The Bad
Take care to note that the following isn't a very legitimate criticism as it is from the opinion of a new-to-manga reader. Oh, and look out for swearing. You have been warned.

1. Inconsistent Story-telling:: I get that this isn't your typical shallow shoujo manga, but I've read plenty of other titles that manage to tell a complicated story effectively. Toriko isn't doing that. The concepts are interesting enough to keep me engaged, but the lack of exposition explaining them is rather off-putting.

2. "Some" Bad Characters:: Among all, I think the main lead - Tomoe - is a total asshole who doesn't deserve Shii's unwavering love and devotion. He started out bearable, but as the story went on he became so aggravating that I personally wanted to beat his sorry ass. I don't care what he's been through but there's no excuse for someone to torment an innocent for no reason. Also, some of the other minor characters are also quite poorly developed and seemed to be there just to fill the space.

3. The Main Romance:: This is a continuation of number 2. Yeah, I am absolutely not rooting for Shii-chan to end up with her asshat master Tomoe. (I'm a girl, but I couldn't understand why anyone would fall in love with hateful assholes - and that seems to be the most popular trope in shoujo romance mangas, like WTF?) It would be a thousand times better for her to fall in love with Kuchina instead. Unless Tomoe changes for the better, no blessings from me.

4. Art...isn't too good?:: Okay, maybe this isn't exactly bad, on the contrary it's quite good. But I feel that it could be neater.

Ah well, that's all for my review.

Weird, but slightly below average?

This manga was so confusing! The maid is a bodyguard who -likes?- the MC, the MC is super cold and total asshole, his friends are even weirder, this chic got shrunk from saving someone else? The art is average, but not my type. Plus the storyline is super confusing; makes my head spin round. No help that I read it in several sittings, so nothing much ties together.

The cool part about Tomoe is that he has this deep, dark past which makes him so secretive, and that Shii is an airhead, but also pretty sharp. Their relationship is like a give-and-take one in a sense, that Tomoe taunts Shii like crazy, but Shii responses by trying to understand him and serve him to the best she can, but Tomoe keeps pushing her away. I think the other characters are too confusing, though-the White team especially. Although their gadgets are cool as hell, they are seriously weird. The introduction of the Black and White teams in the school is a turn off.

Overall, I would rate it slightly lower then average-kinda like I would stop halfway and never go back to it, but at the same time, there's a slightly interesting plot (though it's covered in other crap) behind it all which would make me re-think my decision of reading the new chapter when it comes out.

Hmmm... I don't know why people doesn't like this manga or thought it was confusing or something... I guess everyone have their own taste~
In my opinion, this is my ideal manga. It might be a lil' bit confusing, but read it carefully and you will get the story. I like it how the main characters are actually/hinted like each other but still struggling with their own feelings and conditions. Now, this pulling-pushing kind of love might be kind of annoying and get you impatience... but that's exactly why it's so interesting/addictive!! So give it a try!! Read it!!
Personally, I like Fushiki Tomoe so much that I really want to see his development xDD!! It's rare to see innocent character with dark personality hehe he's like a wolf in sheep clothing and GOD he's SO freaking handsome //shot!! Lastly, I hope that it'll update fast (I can't wait lol)!!

Hard to understand. Below average art. No plot explanation. The heroine is somewhat appealing, with her wanting-to-improve attitude and enduring all insults and cold treatment. The boy, however, is horrible. Bad development, the worst attitude. He worse than those bastard tsundere characters. He is so sarcastic and rude, yet he's able to smile while doing it. He expects the best treatment from his maid/bodyguard, and doesn't return the favor. A brat, simply put.

Nice art but doesn't cover up for its unimpressive storyline.
Cold male lead and a hyper maid/bodyguard..seriously, there are too much going on, and lots of insignificant characters appeared.I wonder where this one leads to, downhill or lowerconfused

Let's see... You have a mop fitted with a sword, a plush bear that shoots beams from its eyes when it's not doubling as a dagger of sorts, a wand thingy with a heart-shaped tip that's actually a mobile phone on disguise, multiple weapons (whips?!?) you can pull out from under your lingerie... The list goes on...

It has a good thing going with it and a very unique plot, but it was quite confusing. The art is great but some of the guys are looking alike and its sometimes hard for me to differentiate. However, I was kept interested while reading it. There are twists and turns I guess and a lot of secrets that are left unanswered. The mangaka kind of jumped into the story without that much background for any of the characters which is really really needed (especially the lead). But at the same time, there are hints at it and it will most likely be cleared up in future releases but the male lead is seriously annoying in a way but I still like him for whatever reason I like him. He's probably one of the most confusing leads I have ever read about in the odd way that he acts. It's one of those mangas where while you're reading you're quite confused but then once you're done and thinking back about the story, it'll probably be quite a refreshing read. I'm counting on the future releases to clear things up and provide a good ending (hopefully). I liked how the characters are quite complex and the humor is cute (:

Art is gorgeous... it's unfortunate because...

The plot is so damn awful. Okay. I lied. It's a really fantastic idea that became completely muddy. It's like when you get really excited trying to explain something and constantly skip over pieces, lots of ums and ahs.

It feels like the author had one idea for the story and then just kind of made sh** up after the first volume. I'm sorry but I do NOT want to SUDDENLY find out I'm reading a sci-fi the fourth volume in! You can't do that. And even if the author meant to provide more hints along the way, they were lost. She just wanted to do everything at once and it failed.

It's SO CONFUSING. I think the main reason being you don't really have a "main character". I know nothing about the Tomoe and know only the surface of his maid Shii and it's the fourth volume in. It took me 3 hours to get there. I felt like I was watching Cloud Atlas again.

In a story with such a convoluted plot, especially an action story, especially one where there is going to be "Surprise" sci-fi elements, you need a pillar. You need something or someone who keeps the reader grounded. The closest to that is the Kabuki actor but he is consistently pushed as a unimportant static character.

I will admit things start coming together around chapter 14, but it takes SO LONG to get to a stable place and even then it's only stable in the scope of the series, not a story that is done well.

first of, i really enjoy the story. i want to know more about the truth behind the annihilator and the main char coldness. however, the panelling suck big time here. the speech bubble is all over the place and overall the page look messy. to me everything goes too fast or too slow. in addition the actions in here dont flow, but that is expected of shoujo. i always find shoujo manga have a lot of 'still' poses where shounen the characters actually move. the setting is over the top and the characters even wierder. however, the main character still manage to make me interested.

i wont recommend this to anyone, but if you like cold protagonist, you may like this.
