Mari is a shy, studious girl who has neither a boyfriend nor any friends. One day, Akiko - one of the most fashion-conscious and sociable girls in the class - strikes up a conversation with her out of the blue! As the days go by the two become inseparable, with Akiko often cheerily remarking on how they became best friends so easily. Mari has a lot of fun with Akiko and her group, slowly becoming more outgoing despite still being timid and awkward. But she knows, deep down inside, that she doesn't want them to stay just friends forever...

My second yuri/shoujo ai
Rating: 9.8 / 10.0

After reading Sasameki Koto, i figured i'd explore more of the genre. Thus i picked this up the next day. I'm not exactly experienced in this genre, so i'm not sure what is cliched or original, however i liked how much this differed from how sasameki koto began.

The girl love doesn't actually begin for a [very long] while which works well as it establishes a mood which is consistently at the state in which I feel like i'll laugh at any second as i read about a beautiful friendship.
None of the developments feel forced, if anything they feel natural, which is most likely due to the length of this work [though i do wish it continued to tell their story so...well, i don't know how to put spoiler tags, so i can't say]. The one sex scene [if it can be called that] isn't exploited and is more like consummation incarnate.
To be honest, i don't understand how this could get so many low ratings. Perhaps it's from those who stopped after a few chapters, disappointed with the lack of yuri.
The fact that i don't want to spoil anything is holding me back from saying a lot of things...just read it.

i suprisingly liked it! Im a girl, and a YAOI ADDICT! i treid reading yuri through impulse and this is my first one. Thou the story slow, its still worth it because you can see their relationship slowly growing into love from knowing each other and becoming bestfriends and eventually fell in-love with each other. smile))))

MUST READ! TRUST ME IT's WORTH IT, you can even get some beauty tips. haha.

& OH! i forgot, THE ART IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't normally read Yuri stuff, but this was both cute and sweet at times. It also acknowledged the difficulties and challenges of such a relationship. It did not go over the top with melodrama and the ending was quite touching. It actually left me wanting more, which surprised me. I would probably read a sequel (taking place like 5 years later) to this if published, which for me is saying alot.

This manga is very touching and makes you want to cry. I'm a guy so I don't really cry to these kinds of things, but it just makes you sad when they face their hardships. Loved this manga and sad to see it end. This is one of my favourite mangas I've read couples of months that I started reading. Recommended to anyone who is looking for a good read in Yuri/Shoujo Ai.

the commonplace girl protagonist is what makes it a success

What I really find enjoyable about this Yuri (girls-love) series is that unlike a great bulk of yuri series where one of the female protagonist is somewhat more "domineering" (be it more masculine traits like Sumika in "Sasamekikoto" or greater social standing and qualities like Shizuma in "Strawberry Panic"), in "Girl Friends", both protagonists are the very commonplace high school girl that you can find almost anywhere. Yes, if you stretch it, "Akko" has a more proactive personality and Mari is more reserved and timid, but both of them are not too "out of this world" characters, and this fact makes it easier for the reader to associate with their love story. Sometimes, being able to build familiarity with the reader via a somewhat more believable tale is also very important in story-telling. And Morinaga-sensei excels in doing this.
