Got hooked on this manga right from the beginning, it doesn't rush into the story between the 2 main characters immediately like other manga comic's do, they took their time to and what a perfect job they done. DID NOT expect it to end that way, I've literally just finished reading it, and by time I finished it tears were trickling down my cheeks, I wanted a good ending to this one because I thought that the Noeru deserved happiness in the end after all the suffering he had been through, but what a great manga none the less, I'll definately read this again soon.

I definitely agree that the ending was rushed. Still it's better than the movie.
I have to say that they did have a progressing relationship that made sense with Mamiya being gentle blah blah but the end...
Spoiler (highlight to view)
First of all, Noeru's feelings about Ken-chan was a bit too obsessive for me - which made it less realistic.
And there's Chidori, who's feeling are even more obsessive + morbid.
The one who only seemed to make sense was Mamiya, who in the end seemed to lose his mind also.
I'd understand it if he'd walk into the sea with him like he did in the movie "dying together" (if I don't remember the movie wrong) - but waiting there with a corpse? And at least in the movie he had changed his shirt - a one without blood...
And there's the fact that their relationship didn't have that kind of "development" that would make them want to die for/with each other.
Tthe promise about "seeing the ocean together" made by Mamiya and Noeru was meaningful, but Chidori coming in right after and killing him was... absurd. But I don't remember the mention of the promise in the film - even if there was it wasn't so explicit since I don't remember - it might be due to crappy sub too though. And the end that made no sense when I watched the movie made a bit sense thanks to that promise.
Still it could have been better - since their relationship was progressing

Spoiler (highlight to view)
just as a note who is interested: I've watched the first and the second movies and to be honest even though It wasn't going according to the manga's plot I liked the second movie better. So I recommend it.

Sweet... until the end.

Feels like a rather gentle portrayal of the beginning of a really platonic love... (even if you wouldn't have expected such a development with one of them being how he is)... progressing smoothly but not too quick... until the final chapter. Personally, the biggest thing I felt was 'such a waste'.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Ok, first thing I thought was 'when are you going to actually call the ambulance!?' And then when we got to the end, it was like 'what, you didn't even take him to the hospital!? You just gave up!? What the hell???'
The story could have been developed much more, and has the potential to be absorbing if it had been fully fleshed out; as it is, the end
Spoiler (highlight to view)
mutual confession of love, promise to be together, then Noeru just dying like that and the other two not doing anything practical to save him
simply feels too rushed, too out-of-the-blue, too unreal for me to really feel as you'd expect from such an ending.

I absolutely love the movie, and if the manga is anything like it then I'll absolutely love the manga. The characters are very real. There is no magical love at first sight. Rather it's a progression from friends to something else, and the journey to that point is hard and painful. And the ending...oh what an ending. Let me just say that you'll never forget it. So if you're reading the manga please go watch the movie. There is a subbed version online at youtube. This is easily one of my favorites.
