This wasn't a bad read but you just have to tolerate one of the dumbest protagonist that has ever been created. Bronte definately is a special kind of stupid. I agree with toffeefudge, this is not as good as Silver. She doesn't really have much character growth and isn't really someone interesting to read about either. But Mars West is somewhat interesting and the rivalry between him and Gus Brown has me hooked.

I already gave up on Bronte by chapter 1. I knew she was going to be stupidly nice, obedient, and subdued. So I just laughed and moved on whenever she goes full on Stupid-Mode. I laughed a lot. This helped me enjoy this series.
I'm pleasantly surprised to say that I didn't hate this series -- I did laugh at how stupid the plot was many times, but that's all. The characterizations were cliche, but this series kept me on my toes. I read the entire thing in one go. The plot is interesting even if it's a train wreck. A melodramatic, sexist, and unrealistic train wreck.
The main girl and main guy are Mary Sue and John Smith, both have nearly 100% pure integrity. That made things a bit cliche, but it's also nice to read about a girl who felt lost after plastic surgery. I enjoyed reading about how she regained her sense of self through her love for someone else. That was interesting, and I never thought about something like that before.
WARNING: rape occurs, many times. So does sexual assault. You have to suspend belief and just not get angry when these scenes show up. I skipped some chapters where I knew a rape scene was coming up, and I recommend you do the same.

The ending was a bit TOO dramatic for me, and the antagonist was finally grating my nerves. She didn't know when to give up! It became so dramatic it was laughable-- i couldn't take the last 5 chapters seriously at all. It's nice we got a happy ending though.

First I want to say that the artistry is way way better then in "Silver".. As for the story.. You could just feel for the main character in the beginning, but after that she just gets annoying.. Story was interesting enough to finish.. Smut parts were okay..
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
starts with a girl running from the altar because she was ditched by her fiancé.. It starts to rain and she ends up in an abandoned cabin.. When she went in there was someone else in there aswell.. His shirt is filled with blood.. But she doesn't think he is dangerous.. They start to talk and he ends up kissing her.. They part ways cause he got arrested and went to jail.. Somehow later on they meet again while she is working as a florist.. He ends up being a rich man that is a suto owner of a hotel.. They make plans to go out but when she went to grab something from her car she gets hit by a car and her face gets messed up.. This psycho plastic surgeon ends up changing her face to look like her mothers.. He tries to keep her here but another woman that looks like her twin saves her.. She then meets the man again because he ends up being the other woman's husband.. She then decides to be that woman's double as a model.. It's pretty much after that the woman that looks like her tries to get her killed all the time.. The husband wants her and they have lots of sex.. Then the guys half brother also wants her and blackmails her to Mary him and has lots of sex with her.. She constantly gets in a situation where someone pops her boobs out. Almost gets killed a lot.. Gets kidnapped like all the damn time.. In the end she suckers all of them into doing what she wants because she is so so sweet.. And it ends up being so Romancy that it actually ruins the story for me.. Happy ending of course.

Why do mangakas wish to make heroines sooooo stupid. well I'm not going to put all the blame on the mangaka since this was based from a novel first so there's shared responsibility. I liked to story until the heroine became the most spineless, stupid, lack-witted idiot with a mother Teresa complex I've had the displeasure to read about. (no.1 on my list of terrible manga heroines) Gus basically rapes her and she forgives him. the doctor kidnaps her and tries to use her as a replacement for her mother and she forgives him. And lets not forget Mischief who uses her, almost has her raped or killed on multiple occasions and shoots at her with a gun and Bronte still doesn't want the bitch to go to jail, REALLY!!!!! Bronte wants to try and save her,REALLY? I love smut mangas but the dynamics between Bronte and every other character but Mars makes this story a little tough to swallow. the smut is the only reason i give it a 7.

I'm generally not a hater, I'm receptive to all kinds of character personalities, but I must admit the female protagonist of Gold is really really annoying sometimes, with her all nosense actions. Anyway, it's a good manga despite that...

I had high hopes for this manga because I was literally addicted to Silver (couldn't get off my chair) but ended up not feeling as strongly about the characters and eventually getting bored and dropping it. Unlike the main character of Silver, who was naive but also smart, and showed great character growth, the main character of Gold was a little too straight-laced, meek, and somewhat un-interesting. The story, set in modern-day America rather than Victorian England, also lessens the strength of the plot somewhat. The page-turner of the story is the ex-wife antagonist who is deviously schematic and keeps throwing the unwary couple together (without her, you wonder if these two bores would even be together). When the sex scenes did show up, they did not disappoint, however.
Meh

The art is nice. Some part of the storyline is good but the rest is meh... melodrama, stereotype, sexism and all... some sexual assault scenes. Maybe the serie is too old (and thus some old cliches), and that for an 8x audience though.
I wonder if the novel is good...

The drama is entertaining (if you get past the whole plastic surgery at the start), the plot has it's fun and good parts. The core of the characters are oddly interesting. Their pasts even interest me. I wish I believed the main love story though... but I just don't. I don't understand their interest/love for each other. The side characters I get (that's a possession type love), but the main couple? How/why did they fall in love? Why do they crave each other so? It's just not believable to me.
And on a complete side note, this manga has a lot of men going down on women (sexually... obviously), which for the feeling the mangaka wants you to emote, it doesn't always make sense why the man would go down on the woman. On that point the sex scenes are very... boring; which for me is: they don't show a lot, and every sex scene feels the same, even the (sorta) rape scenes.
I dislike the ending in general. Was wanting a bit more realistic drama, rather than a "she can change, if we just talk to her" type drama... In general the amount of changing that goes down by just having a heart-to-heart with Bronte is silly. Those type of high class individuals portrayed in this manga shouldn't be so easy to change with just a few heartfelt words by Bronte "the one who sees only good in people" (or so they would have you believe). I feel like her character could have been shown in such a better way. She is just so... boring! The plot is only good because of the side characters, not the lead.
I have one question that I really wanted answered that is never answered and it's:
All in all it's an entertaining manga but with too many boring or careless choices made by the mangaka. I wouldn't recommend it, but I wouldn't say you shouldn't read it. Considering it's based off a novel, I'd suggest reading the novel and not this manga.

What is Mars' real first name? We are told many times that he picked the name Mars himself, so why are we never told his birth name? Makes no sense why they didn't put it in there...

Actually, I thought the beginning with the whole plastic surgery bit was SUPER ridiculous too. You have a superstar, the daughter of whom (also the protagonist) is super plain. And she conveniently gets hit by a car the same day the her mother's obsessive-plastic-surgeon-super-fan runs into her at her love interest's hotel. All so she can look like the mirror image of another model who also conveniently went under the knife by the same crazy-psycho-super-fan. Wouldn't it have just been WAY simpler for the daughter to look like her mother in the first place. Cut this unnecessary plastic surgeon character right out considering he only shows up at the beginning of the story and at the end. And btw, for someone super obsessed with his "successful" creation, he's totally unconcerned about her escaping. It's not like she's difficult to track! I'm sure there were less ridiculous ways of creating conflict and confusion between the characters. Then the story takes off and it actually quite interesting. I LOVED the way our main character comes into her own and starts to realize her inner strength and beauty. She has the same face as Mischief and her mother, but her image is completely different from the both of them. Even though she's lost her face, which is integral to her sense of identity, she finds herself and doesn't need to rely on how she looks to define who she is. Eventually she breaks through everyone's walls, which is nice and ideal, if not really practical. But then that last bit where Mischief is trying to kill both her and Mars. Jeeeez! I felt like it was the manga version of a lame action flick where the fight scene never ends and there's always one more thing! Also, both Mars and Bronte were just plain stupid! Who goes to a secluded place alone to meet a woman who has made it very clear she wants to kill you? Anyway, small example in a long list of plot holes. There there is also the fact that Gus just disappears part way through - SO MUCH brotherly bonding potential lost!!! URGH! Anyway. All in all, the loose ends were tied neatly, it was an intriguing concept and it definitely didn't suck. Could it have been better? Yes. But I think it did alright.
