rather original fight manga by Tiamat on October 18th, 2009, 8:06pm

The story in this manga is actually pretty good I'd say. The primary setting is mid 1930s shanghai which is pretty unusual/original compared to other stories. Art for both the characters and the environments is very detailed and well done. There is also great variety in the character designs (especially the often ugly villains.)

Kenshiro, the main character, is a total badass, and tends to adhere to the justice of "an eye for an eye," sometimes with funny results. Many things (usually having to do with the fights) are cheesy and absurd but this should be expected in most fighting mangas anyway.

Unlike typical shounen fight mangas in which the main character usually possess "great potential/power" but is "inexperienced" Kenshiro is both extremely powerful and extremely experienced as a fighter when the manga begins. If you want a manga where get to watch the main character train and get stronger to defeat stronger and stronger opponents, this is definitely not the manga for you. You could say that this removes some of the suspense from battles because you are so sure Kenshiro will win, which may be the main problem with the manga.

On the other hand, you could view it as a refreshing change from the norm. The fight scenes are also not super long in general, so if you want a manga with fighting near constantly this is also not a good manga to read. However, I would say that the reason for this is because the manga actually has a plot. Also, characters in this actually die regularly, which is a plus in my book (dragging things on with the same enemies all the time is lame.) Anyway, if you're still interested after hearing more about it give it a try, it may grow on you.

Just read below by darkgenio on October 15th, 2009, 2:05pm

This manga is a prequel (although it has been made after the orther series ) to "Fist of the north star". When "Fist of the north star" came out it was innovative in a way, but soon started to repeat the same plot device forever: opponent... stronger opponent... ultimately the big fighting God to be defeated. Not much else really. To make it worse, "fist of the blue sky" does not even have anything new, it's like a chewingum that has been chewed for over 20 years. The authors are good at only 2 things: character creation and fighting scenes. If it is what you are looking for then go ahead and try it, especially if you are in the age range 14-18. Otherwise try somethong deeper, like Blade of the immortal or Vagabond, just to stay in the martial arts genre.

I rate it a 5, out of pity for the old story which i loved in my teen years
