Otaku Sakamichi Onoda has just entered high school and plans to join the anime club. In middle school, Onoda didn’t have any friends with whom he could talk about anime, games, Akihabara and other otaku things, and he is hoping he can make such friends in the anime club, but he finds out it's been disbanded. In order to reestablish the club he tries to find four other people who would like to join.

Since he was a little boy, Onoda has ridden his mamachari–a bulky bicycle with a step-through frame mainly used for short rides, such as for casual fun or to pick up groceries–to go to Akihabara every week to check out or buy otaku things. Fellow freshman Shunsuke Imaizumi and bicyclist, while training, notices a boy (Onoda) riding his mamachari up a steep road.

Freshman and road racing cyclist, Shokichi Naruko visits Akihabara to get some Gundam plastic models for his younger brothers and meets Onoda who catches his attention because of his cycling skill on the mamachari and later find out they go to the same school. Later on, both Naruko and Imaizumi try to convince him to join the bicycle racing club, but will he?

Not bad. As the previous guy said, the artwork isn't anything to call home about, but it isn't bad and I think it fits the series. The MC indeed isn't anything special either, and yet he's more likable than a lot of other weak-to-strong protagonists out there. A good cast of characters. Nice action.
Good read.

Sports manga. Drawning isn't 'clean' but I actually like it. Main character is actually pretty good. He fits a lot of the pathetic MC cliches on paper, but he has enough redeeming qualities to root him on. Some humor. A decent amount of realism.

If you are looking for something to read and sports manga doesn't bother you. Read this.

Wanna Be A Genius? Just Train Harder Than Anyone

Among other things, that's what I get the most from this series. I've tried to slot every cyclist in this series into 'pure genius' category (you know, the one who can accomplish something without doing almost anything), and surprisingly, NO ONE fits the category. All of the 'genius' cyclist in this series achieve that status by doing waaaaaay harder than average people, whether they did it deliberately for the sake of winning a race or not. This actually shocked me, because in all sports manga (or shonen manga) I've read before, at least one character makes his/her way into the category. This absence actually makes me happy.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I admit I almost slotted Midousuji, but after learning about his past, I immediately put him with the rest.

So, what I like the most in this series is the fact that everyone, the 'average ones' and the 'geniuses' alike, train themselves incredibly hard, and you can feel it by reading their own flashback stories. That what they've accomplished is the fruit of their training and their beliefs, that they only get their 'genius' title by hard work, and harder work, and more harder work.

If you put down this series because of the art, you're missing a rare, unique big fish. And in my opinion, the art actually get better and better in the latter volumes, so no worries smile
