Description
From Anime News Network
500 years before the story of Saiyuki, a heretic child with golden eyes is brought into Heaven. He is given into the reluctant care of a minor deity named Konzen, the nephew of the Merciful Goddess Kanzeon Bosatsu. Konzen eventually gives the child the name "Goku". Goku becomes friends with two other minor gods, Marshal Tenpou and General Kenren of the Western Army of Heaven. He also meets a strange little boy who seems to be his own age, the War Prince Nataku. Although Goku is happy in his new home, Heaven is not kind to heretics. There are those who would use Nataku and Goku as tools in an attempt to seize the throne of Heaven, and Konzen, Tenpou, and Kenren may not be able to save them.

First off, I must say I DO NOT like any of the sequels of this manga- I tried both Gensoumaden and Reload, finding them both to be incredibly boring. On the other hand, Gaiden, which I read first, was very touching and rather interesting, with political intrigue directly involving the foursome. It's a shame none of the sequels even remotely live up to the standards of this one...After all, there's no point in reading this if the follow-up is so plot-less and repetitive.

I love all of saiyuki. But this prequel is the best. the story, the characters and especially the graphics XD

Saiyuki Gaiden is wonderful. The story is great, the art is beautiful, and the fights are epic.
This manga makes me very emotional. It's heartbreaking...the interactions between Nataku and Goku;;;what is inevitably going to happen...it's all very heart-wrenching.

I think this is the best of the three Saiyuki manga. The fighting is really amazing and you get to see what made our beloved foursome into...well our beloved foursome. A must read for Saiyuki fans and for anyone who loves action and a great plot.

the graphics are freaking awesome! the fighting scenes left me breathless. i'm amazed at how so much detail is given! definitely worth a read! no doubt.
