I almost feel like I can't review any of the portions of this series properly until I've finished them all, but I'll give it a shot. The atmosphere in this first arc is brilliant. The village's alternating feelings of warmth and darkness are both displayed wonderfully, which lends it an ethereal feeling of utter bizarreness - which is totally fitting for the story. It presents a lot of mysteries and questions that I absolutely can't wait to (hopefully) figure out and/or have explained! Can't wait to read the rest... A wonderful start to a hopefully awesome series.
Edit: Having read the entire series now, I feel comfortable coming back and adding to this review. I feel this arc is the strongest of them all, as it can stand as a single story OR springboard someone into the entire series. It also can't be beat for the chilling atmosphere it creates. In subsequent arcs, the events are no less horrific (at times, even MORE so), but the sudden creepiness is no longer as unexpected and doesn't cause the same chills down the spine that you'll get here (supposing this manga is your first introduction to the series).
Bottom Line: If you read this and are fascinated by the blood/gore/creepiness, keep reading. If you read this and find the unanswered questions and mysteries intriguing, keep reading. If you read this and found the violence offensive or got frustrated by the lack of explanation for characters' behavior - you might want to stop here and call it a day.

This was my favorite arch in the series. Prolly because I didn't know what exactly it was about yet so when things did start moving it grabbed my attention. You know, with the killing and all. I thought it was a random slasher manga at first, but it all comes together. Slowly but surly the mystery of Hinamizawa is solved. Moral of the story: Violence is sometimes the answer.
