An overlooked romcom-harem series with a slightly more unique premise and easy-to-get-into humor

Short review: Nyan Koi! is your typical high school romcom/harem but with cats, so it’s better (lol). It’s actually quite funny and is a fun ride for those who do try to get into it.

Full review:

Warning: review contains spoilers

Being one of those harem anime, I don’t think we should expect too much in the way of plot. Still, the premise is quite cute, with the cats and all. The cats are actually not side accessories in this and they have roles (and entire chapters) about them. I personally think the whole idea of having 100 wishes to grant does give us a direction, and we while we see Junpei going through the wishes, there’s also a bit of development with the romances. Like the usual pattern for these kinds of stories, only two girls actually have a sort of chance, and well, everyone is also there for fanservice. There’s no harm, though, as Nyan Koi does exactly as it intends and doesn't try to be overwhelming. Sadly, by the latest chapter there are still plenty of wishes to go and neither Junpei nor any of the girls have seriously confessed. I would have liked to see how the entire series wraps up.

The characters, both humans and cats, are adorable. The girls are likeable, and despite a lot of them playing your typical harem roles, they’re not super forgettable. The main girl Mizuno is sweet and clumsy, the childhood friend was a gyaru, there’s of course one that was confused for a guy at first, there’s twins (and one’s a tsundere), and a hot older girl - with the lineup, you’ll definitely have someone to root for. Our hero Junpei is well, the usual self-insert [normal dude] who manages to attract all these girls for some reason, but he’s not a pushover or annoying. He's actually not a bad friend to the girls (and the cats.) The whole dynamic kind of reminds me of Nisekoi if you've read/seen that series.

The art style is quite nice, the fanservice isn’t over the top, and the characters are distinguishable. Overall, if you’re looking for a light, fun, and short manga to read, I’d say Nyan Koi! fits the bill pretty well. The only thing you'd have to worry about is the fact that there's no ending and there probably never will be.

Plot 7/10

Art 8.5/10

Characters 7.5/10

Overall 7.5/10

I remember randomly reading this back in 2009. It's simply one of the funniest manga I've ever read. When it comes to comedy recommendations, this is the first that comes to mind.

Read it and fall over laughing. I did. Literally.

Pure Evil!

Cats are pure evil! Our protagonist kicks a can, weighing no more than a couple of ounces, and it accidentally knocks the head off of some abscure cat god's stone statue. The head has got to weigh more than 10 pounds. And our lead male character is given a curse, that could well kill him due to his allergies, by this unforgiving, and yes, evil cat god. That's why I hate cats! But I love this manga. Even the absrd situations don't feel campy or over-the-top. The characters each have a distinct personality. There is no overt fan service. The artwork is clean. And even for a Westerner like myself, I find it easy to follow. A great manga to sit back with and enjoy. Even with family members around! Oh, and did I mention.... I HATE CATS!

Nothing special, but it's great to read fun & cute manga to relax your mind once in a while. I hope it'll go in a different way than other harems: the main character would love the tsundere tomboy childhood friend, not the cute love-at-first-sight/we-both-have-feelings-for-each-other-but-too-shy-to-confess.

Each chapter I read had me burst out laughing. The characters are great with various personalities including the cats. Interactions between every character is hilarious and expressions are over the top. Fun to see the male lead Junpei involve in various situations.

*Update*
Its been 7 years and two degrees later, I still fondly remember this wonderful series as one of my top favourite romcoms. Rereading it a few days ago, it still holds well against newer romcoms; the art still does not show its age. Kanako is still cool and beautiful, Mizuno still sweet and lovely, the cats still cute and bossy lol~

Ah~ How I wish the author would continue this series.
There's really nothing like it..

*Original Review*
A fresh take on the romcom genre. As drunkguy said, there's none of the typical fanservice, which i just realized now. Not a bad thing though.

The character designs nice, but they kinda look like university students rather than highschool students...

A great lighthearted series involving lots of cats, which i liek very much.

Many a LoLCats in this series. Beware.

This is your typical escalating harem in that the character gradually gains love interests over time instead of having a large pool present in the beginning. The main character is your typical oblivious guy in love with an even dumber girl. The other girls are pretty vanilla so far. There are no drunks, lolis or guys pretending to be girls. The main hook really is more about the cats and the missions they send Junpei Kousaka on.

Amazingly for a harem, there is pretty much no fanservice. Even where you'd normally see a clear closeup panty shot in a gag manga, here you only see skirt and shadow from a relative distance. Even so, I'm more than a little wary that it is licensed by CMX. After the butchering they gave Tenjou Tenge, I wouldn't be surprised if they screwed over this surprisingly benign harem manga anyway.

in a nutshell, its a romcom where the main character can talk to cats due to a curse. cute art with the usual cliches and semi-clueless female love interests. but since it has cats, and i like cats, it gets a 10.
