Description
While many of us would probably scream at even the thought of a ghost being near us, Freshman Nimura Kensuke just thinks of it as a common everyday thing, seeing as how he has the uncanny ability to see so many of them on a daily basis. Things soon heat up for him when he meets a girl who changes his life from then on. Her name’s Kagura, and she has the power to summon a mighty “spirit devourer”--otherwise known as a “Ga-rei”--called Byakuei. So, what’s Nimura to do? Chase down the evil spirits and have Kagura summon the Ga-rei to devour them, of course! Now, come feast on their adventures like some ravenous Ga-rei!

IMO this was great, until chapter 32 anyway.
Spoiler (highlight to view) After Kagura loses her memory the manga seems to drop off. Kagura goes from being a strong female lead to becoming an unstable easily manipulated moron.
I feel that what happens in chapter 32 and the chapters following it put the manga into a 'milk it for all it is worth' style. Chapter 32 would have made an awesome ending to the manga and instead it is continued in such a way that makes you hate one of the main characters.
Spoiler (highlight to view) Kagura is slowly regaining her memory but only because she is being manipulated by some new obviously shounen-esque cliche 'stronger that the previous bad guy group bad guy group.' She also seems to be willing to risk the lives of millions so that she does not have to suffer the pain of losing a friend, even though she is aware of a potentially 'perfect ending' situation.
I really hope this series turns around and fast because it is going from good shounen to cliche/standard shounen very fast. Also considering the main character of the manga is Kensuke and not Kagura, it is kind of annoying how he has taken the back seat for almost all of the manga.
I am rating this a 5 but I will continue to follow it in hopes that the author realizes he is killing a good manga and replacing it with one that serves no other purpose but to have a spot in a weekly magazine till the end of time.

Yo this manga is very good and i tell you, just try it.
Even though Kensuke the main is weak (NEED TO GET STRONGER....THE MANGAKA SHOULD LET HIM LEARN THIS DIMENSION CUT THING) its still a very good manga.
The Anime is also very good...(pretty art etc.) but i think they should make a anime of the actual manga that would be great |

and for the guy that's below me, Yomi came back or not is still a mystery. the girl who looks like her is called Izumi, though she has some connection with Yomi, but there hasn't any proof for her to be Yomi yet.
and that's not the famous seven blade sword or whatsoever, that's just a double blade sword or a twin blade. (Serge from chrono cross used something similar). also, seven blade is no where famous, famous would be considered legendary, like murakumo or kusanagi. murakumo fits ga-rei more for spiritual stories. |

for the pinUp guy maybe below me, the 2nd girl you refer at probably( no, more like actually, i think) is Yomi, she is main protagonist at the prequel anime Ga-rei Zero, and one of main boss in the original series, then make a come back as new characters at vol 8. By now the only time you can find her cool is in the anime, i afraid.
And in the vol 9's cover, she doesnt hold a spear, that the Japan's famous Seven Blade sword.
For the manga, its true that the story pace is fast but i dont think Kagura is stupid (no offense but anyone think so should re-check their meaning for stupid). She strong both the heart and skill, how can we hate such character while Marianne Ismaril still out there ?

is it really dissapointing??
i just barely read this i thought the character is well drawn,and cool, don't know anything yet...but is the girl Short-haired girl that can summon the Ga-Rei in page 4~5,chapter 1??
if yes,i'm not interested anymore,the only thing drawing me read this because a picture of a woman with spear up there...pretty Long-Haired girl....

I discovered this Manga through the Anime of the same name, The Anime Gai-Rei-Zero is nothing short of brillaint. Thstroy is tragic but it is told with a skill that rivals Miyazaki. You will come to love the characters and feel their pain as if it were your own.
After The anime the manga was an EPIC disappointment, while it is not a horrible manga, it is below average and not only will it be a waste of your time but it will spoil the AWSOME anime

i like this manga...i jus caught up to the new chapters and waitin for more...but i dont get how its ongoing cuz it looks like the final battle is comin to end and stuff and im jus wonderin wats after this fight.

Very inferior to the thematically similar Kekkaishi. I picked this up because I fell in love with the supernatural-battle-in-a-modern-setting setup of Kekkaishi, but Ga-rei's execution doesn't do it. Interesting premise, but because of the trite and unsympathetic characters, it quickly turns into one big, stale cliche.

| i dont know i think the opposite of what the guy below said i think its a good manga with a good mix with action and just enough comedy and romance..too bad it got dropped damn you licensing! |
