In company-owned rabbit-hutch apartments live tenants who can't afford to live anywhere else, and the apartment complex in which high-school girl Hatsumi Narita lives is ruled over by the rumor mongering, self-righteous Mrs. Tachibana. Get on Tachibana's bad side, and life becomes hell. When Hatsumi has to buy a pregnancy test because her popular sister Akane's period is late, Mrs. Tachibana's son, Ryoki, who used to bully Hatsumi as a kid, promises not to tell the world about Hatsumi's secret, only if she becomes his slave. Suddenly, Azusa Hatsumi's protector in their youth, reappears to save her again! He's moving back into the neighborhood! Despite the budding romance between Hatsumi and Azusa, Ryoki has control over her through the secret that could ruin the lives of everyone in Hatsumi's family, and he hasn't forgotten who his slave is!

annoying main character
Overall the story was interesting and the situation they were in with the main characters family and the Tachibana's was enough to give the story a flavor of its own. Although a lot of people seem to say they really dislike Ryoki because he is rude, given his family's situation and how his mother is I think the personality he has is understandable. What I find to be really troubling is not the fact that the main character is a complete pushover but the fact that although she always thinks about how much she is in love with Ryoki, its true that when she is talking about a man its almost never Ryoki. The only converstation's she really has with him is "NO" "something about her brother" or "Azusa" . If I was Ryoki I'd be just as irritated as he is all the time.

Alright, but a bit of a disapointment..
I liked the fluff and romance but most of the characters just irritated me to death. Hatsumi's character is ridiculously flawed. After 12 volumes, she never learned to stand up for herself. She was a doormat. She let nearly every male character introduced dominant her life. I was hoping that Ryoki would grow as a character but he remained irritably consistent the whole way through. He got the girl, but remained to be emotionally and sometimes physically abusive. I could not see this relationship ever working in real life with real people. I would have much rather seen Hatsumi stand up for herself, ditch those fools, and develop into a stronger, more self confident character.

A lot of people seem to either love or hate this manga. I'm those that hold middle ground thinking, "it was a good run."
[edit by mod,possible spoilers ahead]
The story was just an array of mess, although I have to admit that the family scandal was somewhat coherent. It's just that it gets hard to tie it all up so that it makes sense in your head. Like what Ryoki says, what does something that involves their parents AGES ago have to do with them NOW. Seriously. I mean, Hatsumi and co. were the ones snooping around wanting to know the past, right? And then they learned it, and somehow it was one of major factors in Hatsumi deciding who she likes more, her adopted brother or her on/off boyfriend. Hm.

For the love triangle, I'm glad she choose Ryoki, but only because it was more believable that they actually have something for each other. Hatsumi x Shinogu just felt like a badly read script.
But overall, the ending reinforces nothing. Shinogu's decision was utterly random, Azusa seems like he's about to carry out a murder plot, their parent's lives are worse off than it had been in chapter 1, Hatsumi and Ryoki's snail pace improvement on their relationship stalled even more after THAT finally happens, and Aihara should REALLY compensate this with stories that make sense and have credible endings.
The only thing worth while? Hatsumi's little sister and Subaru's relationship. It was actually a good ending for once.
the first time i read this manga i was in LOVE. it was so dramatic and i totally was hooked. i love shinogu and azusa. they're totally hot and i love their personality. i hated ryoki and i also hated how hatsumi was a weak character. i cant stand how she cant stand up to herself and how she falls for someone so abusive. not only that, but they made no character progress in the story. hatsumi was weak in the beginning and weak in the end. ryoki was mean and annoying in the beginning, and also in the end. I CAN NEVER READ THE MANGA AGAIN. i cant stand hatsumi and ryoki. piss me off.
at the time i was reading the manga i would give it a - 9 / 10
but now i give it a - 5 / 10

How could Hatsumi fall for that perverted abusive Ryoki? Shinogu was so much better =) I hated his ending though u_u I loved Asuza, and then he killed his character by doing...that. I was kinda hoping that he would still end up with Hatsumi... some how >.<
this manga was such a disappointment, I thought it'd be really good after reading the summary.
it was nasty yet romantic
i always saw the ad for the HOT GIMMICK in VIZ shojo mangas. i thought it was innocence and good. i read the manga one day online. i then found out the girl was really annnnnoying and she deserved to go to hell. and the guy with the glasses was annoying too. i felt bad for her brother cause he was so nice and hot

I picked this up after a lot of recommendations. I had to force myself to get through the first four volumes (each time wanting to give Hatsumi a punch in the face for her to grow some kind of backbone), then I gave up and skipped to the end...and she does not grow AT ALL. I don't really find it funny either. It has a lot of abuse in it. I couldnt continue after the attempted gang rape (and what did she do she said sorry afterwards!!)
I guess if you like drama, relationships grounded upon sexual abuse and abuse in general, alright looking guys and if you can relate to the characters and situations, then it might be for you. But it wasn't a manga for me.

i had to force myself to finish reading it after... i think the first chapter... if that........ i hate not finishing things. but.. i almost wish i hadn't finished it. the good "brother" deserved so much better! he was too good for her! i'm almost glad he didn't have to be with her.. but.. i still wish he would be more happy.. and live a better life filled with happiness.. and i'm not saying his choice was terrible, it will probably be great for him in the long run.. i just wish he didn't have to go through all that pain to get there. this manga made me so angry. i hate that freaking loser who thinks he is better than everyone else and then thinks he can force himself on any girl he would like and gets away with it... and i really hate that he does. ugh... that's disgusting. in my opinion he felt no love towards her, only lust, because he is a dirty pig that.. ugh.. i most certainly do NOT like him. don't read this. it sucked. it was terrible... *sighs*.. okay.. i think i might be done ranting... or not.. but i should probably stop. anyway.. please do not read it unless you want to waste your time then feel extremely frustrated with the characters. .. just please. don't read it. (by the way, i don't have anything against this manga author/artist/s style or anything, this story just happens to really.. "grind my gears"...)
was really good, was not awesome
End of it! lol

I Love it! ... but Hate it!
I love the general plot... a bit too sadist to tell the truth, but I like a good drama. The character had a lot of potential, there were time that my heart felt so heavy, and I even felt the pain Hatsumi felt every time she was being abused but... DUH! Who wants to be abused f-o-r-e-v-e-r? GROW UP GIRL! GROW STRONGER! What's the point of passing through so much pain if you don't grow with it? Every character ends up the same as they were before... only more tortured and hurt in the end. I wish I were a mangaka to write a doujinshi ending for this series... one where everybody grow up and learn to face life with the head held up straight!
...and, personally, it made me feel sorry for being born a woman! >.<'
