Redefining BL
Rating: 8.5 / 10.0
by drifting

Half a point off because the art wasn't my favorite. Half a point off because it was too short to have any deep plot or character development. Half a point off because the damn mangaka hasn't made anything else in nine years! Yes, that last half-point subtraction was out of spite but I find it horribly cruel that the author gave us a glimpse of her skills through this and her other one-shot and then disappeared without a trace. T__T

This is hands down my favorite yaoi one-shot because of how much emotion the author managed to jam-pack in just a few pages. It redefines how BL should be viewed and shows why rigid categories of seme and uke don't fit with the fluidity of love in relationships.

Warning: this one-shot is not for people who are stuck with the idea of an uke being cuter, prettier and/or shorter!

Beautiful one-shot

It's just so small you wouldn't believe there's a time skip coming, fufufu. But it was nonetheless sweet. Kaoru and Kaname are, surprisingly enough, quite compelling characters and their love tale aches for more development (not that they were underdeveloped, I just want more of it). I loved that Kaname was so grown up about the nature of their relationship and that

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
he didn't lie or lead Kaoru on into some stupid mistake that would have ruined the magic of this manga -- it pains me that he was so brave and mature, and yet so fearful

Kaoru is sweet too. I love his appearance in the end. I can even imagine them as a reversal couple, one that goes either way regardless, ahah. And the cyclical effect was the cherry on top of the cake for me. It was the perfect ending. Really, really enjoyed it, in its simplicity and depth. I'm not crazy about the art but plot and characters alone make it worthy.

and the seme is....?

At first I thought "the beautiful boy" is uke because he was small, thin and beautiful (of course). But after reading page 1, I can't stop wondering if Kaname is a seme, so why is he so short? (I compare him with two guys stand next to him). And then the last page, "the beautiful boy" actually taller and bigger than Kaname so much. So....it's quite strange if Kaname is the seme right? And finally I changed my mind about thinking "the beautiful boy" is the uke.

I'm strangely attracted to this...

The whole time I was reading this...I had butterflies in my stomach.
Kaoru was the reason.
His very existence itself was...eerie, yet also calming. When you looked into his eyes, it felt as if you were looking at nothing. It felt as if he was just a part of Kaname's imagination.
Though, I highly doubt Kaname would imagine
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
blond pretty boys confessing to him...Hmm...Is this even a spoiler?!
I really liked the ending:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
How Kaoru came to Kaname, months later, confessing to him again. Then, Kaname just smiles, saying: "Of course." Somehow, it makes Kaoru seem even more creepy, but the whole thing had a really nice feeling to it...even if it was sad.

This definitely did a good job for a one-shot.

It's NOT THAT good

Gosh, really. There's nothing gone terribly wrong here but it doesn't deserve all the praises. It's cliche and cheesy and mushy. Usually I avoid BL, yet I thought maybe I was missing a lot of good stories so I decided to give some a try. Now it will be hard for me to believe the comments in BL mangas' page (I've already lost my trust in shoujo manga's page).

I practically worship Himegi Mika!

I say 'practically' worship, because she only created two oneshots. Why? I'm so extremely frustrated by this! Even though she probably has her reasons, like everyone.

And I say 'worship' because even in those two very short stories, she managed to communicate so much! Her art is gorgeous, her words so beautiful, her characters and atmospheres so delightfully angsty, and so on.... I can't find anything that isn't much better than standard.

But why oh why only these two very short glimpses into the worlds she could have created?? It makes me want to cry! There's so much crap I have to go through to find anyhting good, and then you only have a right to a few pages of paradise!

Why is it so short confused This should definitely be continued. Sweet and heartbreaking. I really liked the brown-haired boy's thoughts and their dialogue - this oneshot was translated expertly. Is the mangaka still active?

Quite a mouthful for a title!

Anyway, the art threw me off for a few pages, but it ended up fitting the story very well. One of my favourite oneshots.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
It has a happy ending but the story itself is rather sad.
It's nice to see a BL that covers growing up like this.

I really liked how things went in this oneshot. The story was simple and bittersweet, and it had a simple, but brilliant, resolution. I kind of wish there was more to it. Kaoru and Kaname make a cute couple. ^_^

Fantastic & tender oneshot. Some of the feelings explored were rather painful. I love the style of the illustrations such as the cuts of panel that zoom into specific fields of vision & shading because they mirror the emotions so well!
