Now, with humankind on the brink of extinction, only the elite warriors of the Vius Squad stand between chaos and civilization. New recruit Leila Mikami is one of the squad’s most promising young warriors, but she has another agenda: Her parents were killed by a Dracule, and she’s determined to take revenge. To do this, she has to find the Dragon Eye - a magic weapon that will make her the most powerful warrior in the world.

Average but still enjoyable

I haven't read the entire thing yet; my library only has eight of the nine volumes. And judging by the categories on the page, I won't be able to read volume 9 any time soon.

The entire time I was reading Dragon Eye I kept thinking, "Yeah, it could be worse, but it could be better too." If anything, it's like a combination of Bleach (the characters), Naruto (the setting), and...I guess D. Grayman (the premise)? I haven't read those series in years and I never finished them, so comparing Dragon Eye to them is just unreasonable.

It does start off rather unimpressively, but does improve around volume 4 or so, after they spent way too long in that stupid cave. The fight scenes get better, the characters get more development, and the story overall doesn't feel nearly as reliant on telling instead of showing.

I'm tempted to say that it's worth a look at least, but I also think "it's gets better after four volumes" isn't a good selling point. That's like recommending a show that's twelve episodes long, and the first six are terrible.

Very Solid

The thing about shonen is, is that it is very good when the mangaka is competent and knows how to apply the genre tropes well. Two most important things shonen should fulfill are 1) a colorful world 2) cool, but likeable characters who may belong to conventional character types but they are not card-board cutouts. Basically, they have heart, to put it in shonen terms.

That is why series like One Piece, which fulfills both criteria exceptionally well, is a massive success and continues to be loved, while others fail. This series passes both requirements with flying colors. If this series was serialized in Shonen Jump, it would be very popular.

Another positive of the series is that the female characters are good. They make up a respectable portion of the cast and are well written. It should be something that all writers should be able to do, but it's quite sad how many don't. Considering this fact, and the name Kairi, I believe the mangaka may be a woman. I don't want to compare, but this mangaka brings to mind Fullmetal Alchemist's Hiromu Arakawa, particularly her earlier works. This mangaka's newer work, Rex Fabula(Kyouko no Ou), with its darker, psychological tone, particularly brings to mind FMA's willingness to tackle mature subjects.

I hope that success comes to this deserving mangaka as it had to One Piece's Oda and Hiromu Arakawa and that this manga will continue to be good when it returns from hiatus (although I really like Rex Fabula as well).

why people keep on comparing this to bleach? I don't see anything that remind me of it. -_-

I like this manga a lot, one of the few out there that i truly like, but it's seems like just my bad luck that manga that I really like usually turn out to be hiatus or slow scanlation or both =.=

too bad this manga is not really famous

edit:
the mangaka start a new series.....

This manga is awesome. Interesting plot. I read this online i've been waiting for it to release more chapters/volume but they haven't yet. Anyone know when it would or would it ever will continue to release more ? Because i would like to finish it. It was left at a very interesting fighting part it make me saying WTH in my head every time i go see if there a update chapter release out yet. But its always a disappointment.

this manga is amazing~ i couldnt stop reading after i read the first few chapters. the main character catches the reader's attention and you start wanting to know more about him. BUT... it's on hiatus (still i think) and it's so sad that the manga stopped right at the good part.

I wasn't quite sure about this manga at first, but it was amazing! It's a lot like any typical shounen, where the main character has some special power and eats a lot, but this is different. Issa, the main character, has a gruesomely dark past that is being unveiled a sliver at a time. The main character is irrisponsible, but knows how to take the reigns and get the job done in a very mature manner. Essentially, the world that the story takes place in is a lot like Naruto. There are special forces that have teams and squads that go out and protect civilians, only it's infectious beasts that love to kill and tourment humans, instead of ninjas. There are other countries, but that don't have some stupid, hundred year old grudges. Instead of the main character being childish all the time, he's awsome! Not to mention, he's not a student, but a once bloodthirsty enemy of all humans. The equivalent of Sakura is not whiny, not love stricken, and helluva lot better at fighting. The Sasuke equivalent deals with his gruges and past in a mature and non-emo fasion, and learns to get on with his life. Essentially, it's Naruto minus all the suckieness.

Naruto(w/o suckieness)+Dawn-Tsumetai Te+Ao no Exorcist+Santa(has anyone but me even read that severely underrated manga?)= Dragon Eye. Pretty freakin' awsome if you ask me.

Oh, and btw, the art reminds me of a mix b/t Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto and Dragon Ball... Just a musing...

This is NOTHING like Bleach! Just cause the main character happens to have a big sword doesn't automatically mean he a copy cat of Bleach. It's completely different and they have almost nothing in common with the plot. Actually, they have nothing in common with their plot.

Anyway, I really like this series! Issa just cracks me up with his antics XD And the mystery involved is very deep and I just want more and more! I hope this comes of hiatus T-T

Stop comparing to other mangas

I picked up this series and I really liked it. Sure, it's like Bleach in a way, but IT'S NOT BLEACH OR ANY OTHER KIND OF SERIES!! I can go on comparing it to other series and why it's better, but I prefer not to waste my energy to do so.

While the storyline is a bit slow at the beginning, it picks up near the end of volume 1 and then rolls faster by volume 2. There is some obvious fact that the main character have a dark past, but you don't get to know much until who knows when. But for now, it dwells more on the present and flashbacks of other characters.

I give it a 8 overall because it's not too bad, but at the same time it's not popping out like, "OMG! WOW!" kind of stuff. But when the climax comes, then I'll be doing all that. ^__^

----Edit----

8/13/2013

After 4 years, this is among my favorite mangas to read and recently I've been rereading the entire 8 volumes. I was wondering what happened to the series and it turns out this series went on hiatus due to creator's illness. Makes me sad that this great manga is waiting to be continue running and was left on hiatus.

Issa's humor totally cracks me up and Leila's big eyes is just so cute, especially when she pouts. And to add the fact all those extra pages at the end makes it better because it means more Issa's humor. Btw, I up it to 9 because my last review was when I was reading like the first 4 volumes. The story definitely got better IMO.

Stop comparing. Let me teach you guys how the world works...someone comes up with a good idea, soon people run out of ideas and begin to imitate other works...so stop bringing it up..Cant find this anywhere though.
