I enjoyed it when I was 12.

All I recall was that the main girl is very cute and I really liked how she looked in the clothes. And I enjoyed the sexy female body of the GB individual. <- OK IT WAS NOVEL TO ME AT THE TIME!?!?! It was like Ranma 1/2 with more care put in the art with Chinese-ish world building and some kind of conspiracy fighting action plot with assassination! (It's nothing deep really, it was just my jam for stuffs at that age)

Now, ehhhh I am not sure if I wanna recommend it anymore it's kinda embarrassing. What I recall was that I found the characters interactions fun, and there's some kind of fighting, and spears, and the I reaaallly like the designs of the weapons and the drawings. THAT'S IT. (I did not reread it to not spoil my good memories of my youth)

BUT IF YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO IS AROUND 10-14 I think that they might enjoy it.

I was a fan of the author so I do enjoy this one more than the other works (can't beat exposed female sexy bodies... IT WAS REALLY NOVEL AT THE TIME FOR SHOUJO MANGA TO HAVE THAT OKKK!?!?!?!)... I really gave the original FY a try, it was boring as fck. This one while I can't remember much, was more fun ( I CAN'T GUARANTEE THE QUALITY OF THE PLOT HOWEVER)

This is better than the original Fushigi Yuugi, but it's still terrible. There are too many characters introduced all at once for people to keep up, and the main character is strong but definitely still very much a stereotype.

LOVE IT

i think Genbu Kaiden is how the series should be. The first series, Fushigi Yuugi focused too much on the romance, and the romance wasn't even that good (with Miaka ALWAYS being the damsel in distress and Tamahome being the prince charming that saves her).
In Genbu Kaiden, Takiko is strong, spunky and selfless. She puts the people of Hokkan before herself. She and Uruki were partners, equals in what they do. Though, there are also times when Uruki had to save her, she is in no way helpless on her own. She thinks and doesnt wait for help to arrive. Uruki respects her decisions even when it causes him heartbreak. You can really see the love they have for each other (whereas FY is more of physical attraction and hormones haha).
Uruki is my favorite FY love interest. His character is more 3D and had a lot of growth compared to Tamahome. He went from a bitter fugitive to

an emperor dearly loved by his people.

I also really liked the sichi seichi here, though i also liked the suzaku warriors (Especially nuriko and tasuki). I think both series had good side characters. And this has some of the saddest stories for the side characters

King Temudan. Hagaasu. And Soruen why did you have to diiiie

And the ending! It was perfect! Sad things happened and it was kinda bittersweet but it really tugs on the heartstrings ❤️ ❤️❤️

Watase Yuu has definitely improved in terms of art and writing
This story was so much more dark and mature without using stupid themes
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
like rape, love triangles, etc. again and again to further the plot like in FY.
I loved the fact that this used less of "we will use the power and friendship to overcome this ordeal"
I should have realized the author doesn't hesitate to
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
kill off her main characters OTL I really wanted everyone to be happy

Did anyone squeal like I did when I realized Tomite and Hikitsu were
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
actually the guardians of that gate in FY? (appeared in the beginning of vol 9 to be exact) though they look vastly different obviously due to the art improvement

This story is so amazing and sweet, and I bawled my eyes out at the end. It was funny, intense, bittersweet, and incredibly sad. I wasn't very happy with the ending just because
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
it seemed like all of the people who died were my favorite characters. Also, everything was wrapped up, but I can't help but wish it had a "happily ever after" in THIS life, not the next.
But yeah. It's way better than the other Fushigi Yuugi.

So Much Better

It's not strange at all for the prequel to be better than the sequel. I mean, with a bloody bimbo like Miaka for the "heroine" how can one not be put off. Plus, Watase Yuu's writing has really grown between the time she wrote FY and the sequel. Then you get Takiko which must be the product of Watase listening to how annoyed her fans were with Miaka because Takiko is such a far cry from that buffoon.(Still love that idiot Miaka though).

Anyway, this was a tear-jerker, but in a good way. I don't like sad endings, but it was appropriate and set the stage for the next manga. Even if you know what's going to happen because you read the original first, you will still bawl your eyes out.

Bloody brilliant, but though I loved it, it still wasn't as memorable as FY. No matter how much I complain about that manga, I still love the great memories I had reading it as a kid. It was one of my favorite animes and mangas. Both deserve respect and to be given a shot.

This is an absolutely amazing piece of work. I love it so much, every time I think about it, I get tears in my eyes. The ending is very realistic, even though

I bawled my eyes out at the end. I hate the ending, but love it at the same time.
This shouldn't even be compared to its predecessor, FY. They are worlds apart. This is like the sky, and FY is like the ground, the dirt ground. I tried to read FY before, but just gave up because of the heroine. Takiko, is an intelligent girl with her head properly set on her neck. Just read this right now!!! You won't regret it, it's so memorable. Even after the long hiatus, I had no need to reread the story- that's how memorable it is.

Amazing prequel that sets an example

This prequel was written by Yuu Watase some 10 years after the original Fushigi Yuugi and took another 10 years to complete. As a fan of the Universe of the Four Gods, I was especially thrilled when the mangaka decided to come out with Genbu Kaiden, the prequel to story of the priestesses of Suzaku and Seiryuu.

Her art has since improved substantially and the tone of the story is a lot more mature compared to her older work. Pacing is a lot faster, action is more violent and intense, and the story itself is really beautifully tragic. It also helps that Rimudo is a hot hunk! I love him and Tamahome equally. I really wish this one would also be made into an anime in the near future and can't wait for Byakko Gaiden to come out! Rumor has it that Yuu Watase has planned the Byakko arc for 2015.

Takiko's fate has already been revealed in the original FY. Even though I already know what to expect for the ending, I'm still balling my eyes out. It speaks volumes if a mangaka can make a story about a stone (literally) be a tear-jerker. Yuu Watase's knack for story telling has definitely improved and matured over the last two decades. For those who were fans of the original FY, I highly recommend Genbu Kaiden.

That said, I still love the original Fushigi Yuugi more as it's a classic. Takiko is too perfect as the heroine. There's not much character development for her because she starts and ends the same way: brave, strong (having been trained to fight with a naginata), understanding, and self-sacrificing. Where Miaka's strong will is driven by her love for Tamahome and her friendship with Yui, Takiko's selflessness comes from her desire for acceptance (as she faced rejection from her first love and her father). While the story of Genbu Kaiden was written beautifully, a perfect protagonist is just not realistic. In terms of plot development, there isn't as much conflict/drama and plot twists as in the original FY. It's not super boring, but I think Yuu Watase could have added more to make the story more intense and engaging.

All in all, Genbu Kaiden is a very well written manga and another success by Yuu Watase. I only wish I can read Byakko Kaiden right now to round up the Universe of the Four Gods.

I love this one better than FY because while I loved FY, it wasn't serious enough for me. FYGK seemed like a better told story cause the art improved (I like the new one, old one was too something) it's more focused on the story and less on the romance (compared to FY) and I think there's more pull to this one rather than FY.
Now the only thing I need is Fushigi yuugi:Byakko.

I agree that this is much better than FY
I don't like female heroine that always need help, i must say this has more mature plot
I don't have much love for comedy,so this one is better for me.
