The demon queen subdued enormous and powerful monsters and slaughtered over half of the world's population. Surviving members of the human race elected a hero to slay the demon queen, beseeching release from her oppressive rule. However, he questions his mission to eradicate the monsters: in his opinion, they too are conscious and alive, and so he anguishes over that fact. Sheila the Demon Queen became interested in him and joined his journey, hiding her identity and with the plan to kill him after she has gained his trust. Eventually, she realizes that she fell in love with the hero, and hence their journey begins...

While I can't agree 100% with the hero's view either, I still like the series a lot. The art is pretty good though it can be hard to read during detailed scenes (though that's true with a lot of monochrome art). I was all set to write a more negative review due to the lack of an ending but having found out that it is continued under another name has made me happy again. I would like to see some more character development other than in the hero and Sira.

i dont like the ideals by spupapi on December 25th, 2009, 1:38am

This manga is quite good but i dislike "hero" the main character. His ideals and philosophy is not something i'd follow nor agree with. Well art is good i like it. The storyline is just so-so. Relationship between characters is waaaay too fast, damn it. The heroine falls in love with the guy right in first chapter, what the hell?

Seriously... by sailorliones on December 7th, 2009, 6:34pm

I really did not expect another 20th Century Boys out of this. Since the beginning, I was really looking forward to the part where the Hero discovers that Sheila is the Demon King, but it has yet to happen. Actually, it doesn't happen at all in the 9 volumes. Overall, though the story is good and the art is good, it gives off a feeling of being dragged along WAY too much. It doesn't have the characteristics of a manga which pulls you in for 20 volumes, or even 5. It just feels dragged out. I like the way Sheila changes, and the way the Hero change, but somehow it's a bit unreal. Perhaps the prolonging of each action makes it less realistic and believable. Overall, I was quite disappointed in the manga. It feels incomplete. Then again, there is Superior†, which acts as 21st Century Boys to 20th Century Boys, so I'm hopeful the confrontation will be there. So sad to not give a good review...

started good, then it it was only getting worse.. by kathya on November 21st, 2009, 4:13pm

From the first few chapters I expected a quite nice, heartwarming story with strong, oryginal characters... Unfortunately, after volume six or seven, it feels as author does everything to prolong it, adding another characters and turning it into stupid battle manga, that has nothing to do with the beginning, characters also are getting worse. I just finished reading it and the ending left me quite disapointed.

If you have problems reading fantasy with dumb and naive heroines, then you should look for another manga. If you don't, then you will probably like Superior.
This a 6 for me because the story is nothing more than another typical farfetched shoujo. The demon queen subscribes to the hero like a pet. Their relationship is constructed around cliches, and both their personalities lack genuineness and complexity. Sheila is also not very intelligent. Her personality would be right at home in a middle or high school.
Her adoption of the hero's peaceful ways was equally flimsy. The portrayal of war and peace in this manga is black and white (war is wrong; peace is right; there is absolutely no moral ambiguity in war whatsoever, end of story) that it provided none of the tension and depth that are intrinsic in violent stories. As soon as the hero told her war was wrong, she had a convenient epiphany and agreed. Just like that- even though war has been her whole lifestyle and makes up (in theory) a huge part of her identity, she very easily let go.
If you like most shoujo, give this a try.

I was expecting something good from the reviews but. Good enough, and the art is nice, but I don't even know how many stories I read with the exact same premise of "amazingly powerful and evil villain sees good in the world and promises loyalty to hero." Even with the slight variation in the main character being the villain, the queen is the generic manga-girl type with no real depth to her, with the added insult of the same generic backstory that's given to all characters of her subtype. =/
The manga is not bad, but probably worse--it was boring. No real emotional intensity and I never get the feeling that something is at stake. The pivotal relationship--between the demon queen and the hero--is nonexistant and shallow at best. If only I'd known ahead of time to turn off my brain a little more. Guess this'll show me to trust reviews here.

Its a pretty good manga! by Sevodax on August 17th, 2009, 11:38am

I really enjoy this manga, it turned out good even though it was supposed to be a short one...the only thing I don`t like is the fact that at the begging the relationship between Yuusha(hero) and Maou(demon lord) was being pushed to fast and after that it almost stopped, the main idea of the story changing(not a very much though)! Anyway its a pretty good manga, thus I suggest you read it ^_^

Um no. by blackrosevirus on August 14th, 2009, 8:49pm

I honestly don't understand why this is so popular. I admit I like the main demon female but the story is so rushed and (even thought it's drawn well) the panels are just not placed in a very coherent order. The plot is boring, predictable, and cliche. Oh yeah and the main male lead is an angsty idiot. Some hero he'll turn out to be.

This manga earns its name! by BrainFreeZe on August 11th, 2009, 10:14pm

This is truly "superior" (yes terrible joke intended). Story may seem a bit simple yet it is still amazing. it is because the characters are amazing! The author uses a simple story yet creates outstanding development in the characters which is great and they are to die for <3 Sheila <3.
If you love beautiful girls (or boys) the drawings are great and attractive even without being ecchi. this manga has the best heroine in any manga i have or ever will read (i love Kurohime as well). she is beautiful, cute, strong, proud, umm perfect.
The manga balances everything well. Its has the right amount of humor, action, romance, drama, everything. Once you read it you will understand just how great this manga is. This manga deserves so much more recognition. I hope one day this will become one of the best selling mangas as i would gladly spend my money for this manga
All in all a great read for action, romance, humor and everything else in between.
