Sometimes I wonder why my taste in manga is so limited and difficult to pinpoint. Iíve never been able to get into popular ones like Skip Beat, Kaichou wa Maid-sama, Fruits Basket, Hana Kimi, or Hana Yori Dango ect and I wonder why but I honestly couldnít tell you precisely. At first when I skimmed Ouran, I thought it wasnít going to be my type at all either, but upon revisiting it, it surprised me. Ever since I understood the real story, Iíve always firmly believed one thing:

Ouran High School Host Club is ingenious.

Why, you ask? I think the answer lies in the fact that itís exactly what the manga universe needed at that time - a parody. Ouran pokes fun at all the overused and cliché plot devices/character types used in shoujo manga and manages to build on it in a refreshing way. It's the mother of all subsequent shoujo parodies and still sits atop its pedestal today. Many will tell you that Ouran's the golden standard for comedy, but more than anything, I believe it's the golden standard for characters.

Haruhi is probably the only heroine I officially like in all of shoujo. After all those mangas I had been recommended and read in hopes of finding a strong female lead, here she was! Haruhi doesnít physically ďkick buttĒ, but she is intelligent, sarcastic, candid, down-to-earth, strong, calm, relatable and realistic. Amidst all the mayhem, Haruhi has to survive and rely on herself, yet she also manages to build real bonds with the eccentric members of the very host club that ďenslavedĒ her. The whole set up of the host club makes it rather dramatic and exaggerated, but once again, its purpose is to show just how ridiculous some stories are when they mean it seriously. Haruhi might come off as a bit plain or boring to some, but I think the whole point of her personality is to show that everyone around her is somewhat crazy, but that she doesnít lose herself to the insanity. Which, to be honest, is sometimes how we all feel about life. Thatís not to say the host club is crazy in a bad way. Far from it. They are very well-placed in this type of story and each type of character exists for a reason. Together, they form one of the most memorable casts in all of shoujo.

Up until the time I read Ouran, I had only really seen the typical cold bishounen who is most likely a jerk but who also most likely is simply misunderstood and has a secret soft side, ect. I think that after my third manga, I had memorized the formula (which typically doesnít exclude an airheaded, shallow heroine whose face becomes unbearably annoying past the fifth panel). Now, enter Tamaki Ė an outgoing, eccentric, narcissist whose greatest goal in life is to bring joy to ladiesí lives as a host. Tamaki is anything than what I would have expected in a shoujo male lead. He cries easily, is a bit naive (though academically impressive), dramatic, attention-seeking, clingy, loud, obnoxious but most definitely difficult to forget. In spite of his sad family backstory, he remained spirited and caring. Everything he did seemed passionate and random. However, his randomness was so well coordinated with Haruhiís and the rest of the clubís reactions it just flowed perfectly. We have great character chemistry to thank for that.

The story is looser towards the beginning but it does get more focused as it delves into Tamakiís family story. The romance aspect of the story strengthens too (but is by no means explicit as both leads are quite dense in that department). Itís nice to have a story that actually focuses on building trust and friendship before forming romantic relationships. The only thing you have to be prepared for is a lot of dialogue that is a slight drag to read through if youíre someone who really likes to get to the meat of things. Furthermore, the art isnít exactly the best but Hatori has potential to improve greatly. And though I usually care greatly about art, this is one series where the rest makes up for it.

Iím sure Iím not the only one who has suffered from acute disappointment after a previously amazing story falls flat on its face at the end - itís the most draining emotion ever. But one of the best things about Ouran is the fantastic, fulfilling ending. Iím all for happy endings. But Iíll still take a realistic ending over a happy one. Ouran manages to give us an ending that is both happy and realistic (well, realistic enough anyways). I held my breath until the end but inside I knew that I trusted the author to deliver, and she did. I had nothing to complain about when Ouran finished. Looking back through the series, everything was executed so well in terms of what the story was supposed to represent that I can honestly say this is one of the best Iíve ever come across. I havenít given a rating higher than 7 up until now, but that is because I rate from a critical standpoint, so even though Ouran is not my favorite series, it has earned my highest rating so far.

Best. Manga. Ever.

First of all, I'd like to say that Ouran High School Host Club is bloody briliant. Why? The plot is light-hearted, sometimes I think there's no plot at all. I love how well-written and well-developed the characters are. Even the art wasn't the best at first, but the developments are rocketing, compare the last chapter and the first one, the drawings so different (but I still can find the similarities) that I could just gape around like an idiot. It's brilliant, I say, brilliant, smart and not-so-stereotypical shoujo manga. An ORIGINAL.

Haruhi Fujioka? The name is pretty, the person is too. But she's way far from the typical whiny, teary-eyed shoujo heroine. Haruhi is unique, blunt, sarcastic, down-to-earth, smart and not afraid to speak her mind. Do NOT ever compare her with Amu Hinamori (Shugo Chara!) 'cause she's way better than the pink girl. Haruhi is though but sometimes can be very oblivious with feelings around her without being too-dramatic. I find it funny on how Haruhi is always lost agains the club if she's tempted by fancy tuna. I think she's obsessed somehow, ha ha. Haruhi is a reality role-model for girls (or maybe every genders) on how to survive this life and be confident on yourself naturally. I love her witty atittude. She's my hero. She's got style. I adore her so much.

Next is Tamaki Suoh and Kyouya Ootori. If you take a glimpse, their friendship is shoujo stereotypical charming-guy-and-cool-guy-friendship. But it you look closely, it's far from that. Tamaki is a prince charming, that is right. But his often idiocy that shows through the series make me realize that he's far from charming (okay, I admit that he IS charming) and I quote Renge; he's a 'phony prince'. Kyouya's cool atittude can be refered to evil and mysterious, not cool (I'm going to be killed....). Their clash amuses me to no end, especially when they call each other 'Mommy' and 'Daddy' (note Kyouya's sarcasm when calling Tamaki that). I often think this, "How the hell Kyouya puts up with Tamaki's universe amount of idiocy?" I realize that, Kyouya really does care about him and also the host club behind the cold exterior. I aslo suspect that Kyouya loves Haruhi... but some things are better left unsaid, right?

My favourites; Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin. They're the first identical twins I go crazy and obsess with... and I'm crazier after Hikaru dyed his hair dark ash. They struggle to find their individual identity while keeping thei twin status. I somehow respect their hardwork on that, you can see the result already, anyway. Hikaru is hot-headed, often rude and an ignorant but that's how he expresses himself. Hikaru deeply cares on people, especiallt the ones that dear to him (Kaoru and Haruhi) but he's never good at words and ends up being rude. Kaoru on the other hand is someone that a person can go for advice and talk about their problems for hours. He's cunning and sneaky like his brother, but he can still throw wise advices on people. Kaoru can be a very well psychologist if he wants to. Their newly born sister, Ageha, is super duper cute! The combination of the twins mix inside her!

Lastly, Mitsukuni Haninozuka and Takashi Morinozuka. I find it a little bit dissapointing that they're more like cameos rather than main characters. They realize everything from the start.. before Kyouya too. They should get more love in the series. I appreciate their efforts on keeping quiet and let the juniors figure things themselves. I like the odd love-relationship between Hunny and Reiko Kanazuki, they make such a cute couple. Everyone is also curious about Mori's wife, right? (I have this crazy thought about having Hunny cosplay as Kurt Hummel from Glee. I don't know why but Hunny suits the role. Period.)

I'm a loyal HaruhixHikaru shipper but I need to respect Bisco's decision on ending Haruhi up with Tamaki also with every HaruhixTamaki shipper on this site. So, congratulation on both of you, live happily ever after, have great kids that I hope don't inherit their father's stupidity. biggrin

Overall, Host Club is a recommended manga. It's breathtaking, and also hilarious. A-MUST READ OR YOU DIE (I'm becoming violent bigrazz)

Long live the Host Club; The-Club-That-Will-Never-Die!

i used to really love this series and even bought the first 12 volumes of the manga. then, i dunno, the shoujo romance started to blossom everywhere complete with all the bells and whistles of other typical shoujos and i just got bored with it. the other themes in the manga were handled brilliantly and to see the romance handled so...blah....i just dropped it to save myself some grief.

still love the characters to death and love the humor! i'll still remember this series fondly as a rom-com with great potential.

My friend forced me to watch 3 episodes of the dubbed anime version, and after 5 minutes of episode 1, I was hooked. I watched the rest of them until 6am the next day (no sleep obviously) and I started reading the manga and did not sleep until I finished the whole series. This manga, really, ruined my life. Now, due to manga, I barely read actual books because I have been hunting down mangas such as this hilarious rom-com. If I had to choose between sleeping and reading this manga, I would choose the manga. If you do not want addictions, do not read it. This is the funniest manga I have ever read, and in my top 2 mangas ever. It only is beaten by fruits basket.

I really loved this manga when it was first beginning, and focusing on the funny, dumb things that happened with the host club. Then it became ridiculously romancey and srs bzns, and now I feel a little jilted because that's not why I picked up this manga to read in the first place, and it's not doing a very good job leading me into it. I think things like that should be subtle.

I still had a very good time rereading the beginning though. I enjoyed that.

The best protagonist

This is a good series, but not because it is particularly clever or creative. What makes it good is the characterization, All of the characters are unique enough that it makes it interesting to read, however the real show stealer is Haruhi herself. It's like a peculiar case of contrast that the main protagonist is the least animated character whereas the secondary characters are all over the top, but it just seems to work. Honestly i could see the characters working in almost any setting, as all you need is to have one very uninspired and snarky, but loveable lead being forced to activity by her slightly insane cohabitants. And it would probably be just as enjoyable. The only thing that keeps it from really being a perfectly enjoyable read is the ending felt like it could have continued, but doesn't. Its a perfectly acceptable ending, but i guess leaving them wanting more is better than letting them feel tired and worn out with a story.

It just becomes insanely boring, especially towards the end. Walls of text and a cast I wasn't satisfied with, especially the cliched male lead. It was funny while it lasted and I enjoyed it while it was entertaining, but I'm afraid I still don't recommend it.

Ouran High School Host Club is amazing. Okay, so I do admit that I got a bit bored by the time I reached volume 16 and didn't actually "read read" the rest of the manga but rather just skimmed it. However, this manga is amazing for a variety of reasons. First off, the characters have a lot more depth than the typical romantic comedy manga. Second, the manga was great not because of the romance, but rather because of the friendship between the host club members (yes I know it sounds cliche). I liked Tamaki and Haruhi together, but Haruhi kind of irked me towards the end of the manga. I actually found that out of all of the characters, Haruhi probably had the least depth in terms of development. She was the most uninteresting character and had the most bland back story. Rather than seeing her as down-to-earth, frank, and so-called wise, I just found her very bleh. She had no character, and she had no emotion. Well she does have emotion, but there was just something about her that felt so empty. I will commend the mangaka on not making Haruhi a stupid, whiny, weepy, clingy, obsessed with finding love in high school girl. The ending was good, but I'm sorry, I'm a huge HaruhiXHikaru fan, so seeing Hikaru being rejected made me really depressed. There was no doubt that she was going to end up with Tamaki from the beginning, but still, it's hard not to fall in love with Hikaru. Read this manga. It's worth it.

I don't know if it was because of the slow updates that made me forget the joy i had when i formerly read this but the ending didn't send shivers up my spine like the rest of the series did and i'm also not sure about why people haven't been commenting on the style change that hitori-sensei went through. Truthfully i didn't like it. But after all that this manga was a really good one, unrealistic yes, but a true gem. The characters were true, the comedy was great and to be fair it had to get serious at some point so the ending was were the fun slowed. I highly recommend this manga.

I loved this manga. The chapters and the situations were so random and hilarious, at least the first 50 chapters. It then starts focussing on the romantic aspect, which I personally found very taxing. The mangaka spoonfeeds every bit of the characters' emotions to us. There was no subtlety in how it was played out(Like the reviewer before me said). I was completely bored when Tamaki went into his serious mode. But, his recovery marked the beginning of another series of laugh-out-loud sessions.

My favourite character is definitely Tamaki. He provides much of the comic relief, along with the twins,of course. His method of sulking by crouching suits his character perfectly.

The gorgeous art is an added bonus. I swooned every time the host club did a new cosplay. Give it a shot. You won't regret it.
