From Hanashi:

The start of high school life. To the girls, that also meant the start of their love lives. For brand new first year student, Takahashi Nanami (Nana for short), it was no different... She happens to end up in the same class as the incredibly popular Yano Motoharu, who rumors say that two thirds of all the girls are guaranteed to fall in love with. But will that hold true for Nana, who says that if she had to choose between like or dislike, she'd say she dislikes him!?

Note: Won the Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo in 2005.

Nope. Not my cup of tea. It started off pretty good. The characters were okay and likeable.
Then, as the story progressed, I got pissed off. I hated everyone. Everything was getting vague and it left me anxious and I didn't like how I felt. So I just left it without bothering to finish my read.
Anyway, if you like drama, have a try.

had high expectations for this...had it on my list for quite a while and finally got around to it. I've read better...hint of realism in Yano's story, much more than the rest anyway, which was fantastic but that wasn't enough to make up for the entire manga.

A Love Story.

It's perfect for the term "A LOVE STORY".

Worth the drama, the different emotions and just about a love story can portray.

Yano Motoharu and Takahashi Nanami's relationship was a memorable experience.

I would recommend this to a reader that enjoys a slow-paced story. The art definitely improved in the later volumes, which I like to see in mangakas works as their skills develop. What I liked about the author's choice to portray the characters was that nobody was truly the villain. By the end of story, I felt sympathetic for everyone. I didn't hate the characters. I felt like little parts of their situations and dilemma were relatable. Aki with an unrequited love, Yamamoto being misunderstood and unable to express her emotions, the sacrificial hero Takeuchi. I loved them all, including Lalami, Yano, and Nanami.

The entire story spans about ten years, and there is a large amount of hopping. Especially around the middle, where the time drastically shifts forward into the future. It didn't bother me that much, but do your best to not let it bother you either.

Again, this is a slow story, and it shifts around among different character's perspective. It reveals each individual's motives through their thoughts, and I really enjoyed that.

If your an avid shoujo manga reader, then I strongly suggest you give this manga a go!

It was very nice but in the end, it dragged on way too much. And even though Takahashi is the main character I couldn't bring myself to like her. So once the main protagonist doesn't interest me, the whole story just makes me bored or mad. I VERY much disliked her wispy washy love. Yes it was obvious she loved Tano but she was so insecure in it that made me mad. The only character I liked was the black hair girl that Tano met in Tokyo. I forgot her name haha. But the love was still very sweet, yet draggy.

I ended up really disliking Takahashi after only a couple of volumes and the feeling didn't really go away at all
The story dragged allot later on as others have mentioned and I think the only reason I kept reading was to see what happened to Takeuchi, and Yamamoto Yuri (probably the only character I actually liked)

Definitely felt like it dragged out a lot at the end which was a shame. To me one of the biggest pro's about this was that the love triangle looked like it could have gone to the 'unlikely' guy during the high school years before it started to drop off and become clear the guy had no chance, even with what happens later on.

I had a Love/Hate relationship with this manga. I loved all the characters and the events that happened but I would sometimes find myself wanting it to hurry up and end already. I wish it took an even deeper dive into things, it would sometimes seem a bit shallow and unclear. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of emotions that run throughout the manga but it was missing something... and it also seemed a bit repetitive or so. Don't get me wrong, it was good but it had the potential to be so much more. That's the negative part of it but here's the positive:

I loved the main characters. I loved how imperfect Yano was and I loved Nana's will to keep going no matter what happened, to never give up on their relationship. I loved all the side characters as well and their support for them despite their feelings. The characters were very selfless and only wished for the other persons happiness. The plot was very well made. It's a cliche story-- hot guy with problems, nice girl fixes it all-- but it had a bit more depth to it and it wasn't purely physical. One thing i really liked about this manga is Yano's feelings for Nana. It was so much more than just the girl from high school but more so that he really needed her. He needed and wanted her love so passionately and you can really see that in him. It's a manga about loving and being loved in return and going through obstacles that will shake the relationship but also make it stronger. Definitely a manga about -Love-

I honestly loved this. There were a few chapters
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
namely the flashbacks from Aki's point of view
that felt like they were seriously dragging on, but the rest was really good. I almost cried at several points. Honestly, I have watched the first episode of the anime and read the first six or seven chapters of the manga many times, but never got past them because Yano pissed me off. When I finally stuck with it and just kept going, I didn't regret it at all. This is such a beautiful story about life, love, and tragedy.

Time for the breakdown! (If you don't want to read all this, just skip to the very bottom. I'll tell you if I recommend it or not.)

Plot: 9.5/10
This was a really good story. It wasn't quite "cute" -- more along the lines of "tragically beautiful." So much happened in Yano's life, and Nanami was there for him when she could be. Of course, Nana has feelings just like everyone else, and I really liked how she reacted just like I would.

Honestly, if your boyfriend called you to cancel a very important milestone in your relationship to be with another girl (whom he has a history with, no less) without explaining things properly, wouldn't you be hurt, too? And her reaction to everything that happened in the second half of the manga was really realistic, too, seeing as it was depressing as all get out.
Everything was really realistic and beautiful, but tragic and painfully sad, as well. I didn't cry except for once, at the very end, because it was just too sweet how
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Yano's knees gave out when he saw that she wasn't hurt nearly as bad as everyone was making it out to be and he just kind of sat there and bawled.
My -.5 on this was because of a few chapters that seemed to drag on forever

Characters: 10 (This one was difficult to grade, honestly, because they're all well-rounded characters, I just hated one of them: Yuri. She's the type of person you want to sign up for a session with a psychiatrist, ASAP. But when I took a step back from my personal feelings for her and looked at all the characters logically, they were very well done.)
Okay, where to start? Yano was so sad and sweet and romantic and just so... Yano, I guess, that I wanted to hug him. Nanami was an awesome character, very cute but still realistic. She wasn't always cheerful and pure of heart, and though she cried a lot, she never shed tears where they weren't appropriate. I would have cried at all the same times as her, even if tears didn't actually fall. Yano cried, too, so that's what made this manga so much more endearing to me. Take was so sweet and kind and gentle. If I didn't love Yano so incredibly much, I would have wanted Nanami to end up with him. All of the other characters were great and well-written as well, including unloved Yuri and even dead Nana. All in all, very well done.

Art: 9.5/10
The art was very beautiful and showed the characters' emotions very well. I loved the scenes when Yano and Nanami would just kind of stop and smile for a while all goofy-like at whatever they were doing, portraying that feel-good atmosphere very well. However, in the later chapters, there were a few pages and even a whole chapter (chapter 59, I do believe) where the art was completely unfinished. It looked like a rough sketch that the mangaka didn't even bother completing. It took a lot away from what happened right then, but luckily it was only a few times so it didn't harm the story. Other than that, the characters were very attractive and the art in general was very appealing.

All in all: 9/10. Definitely recommended. smile

EDIT: Reading this again as a college student who is almost 19, I can't remember why I loved it so much. I enjoyed it, but it's SO BLEEPING SAD. Like, the whole time, I kept wanting to hold my arms out to Yano, say "Come here, baby," and never ever ever let him go. I used to want a love like this, but I couldn't handle it. I'm not that strong. It's a good read, but I don't recommend it to people easily depressed. It's like Mars, but all the bad things seem to happen to one person instead of the load being shared. I love it, but the bittersweetness is sometimes far more bitter than it is sweet.

I've actually bought all the English version of the manga books licensed by Viz Media's Shojo Beat (waiting for the last volume). It's such an emotional roller-coaster, all of the scenes, whether heart-ache or happiness, they're all beautiful. You can really feel the feelings being conveyed, and it makes you want to read on. Yano and Nanami have an unbreakable bond, and I think it's amazing. Obata Yuuki has really done a good job in developing and untwisting each character that you can't really dislike anyone. The reason for Yano's shield toward the world is because of the painful past/present he's had to face, and it's literally made me tearful because it's so beautifully sad. I love Nanami's strong-willed independent personality, a perfect shoujo heroine. I also love how the story began in high school, and finished when they're age 26 (I think?) so it's in sync with how many years the manga had been in Betsu-Comi. It shows, even though love isn't as perfect and cliche as most shoujo manga make it out to be, love can overcome many obstacles, no matter how long it takes, there'll always be a brighter tomorrow. This is by far my favourite manga. 10/10.
