Kyouko Mogami lived solely for her childhood friend Shoutaro "Shou" Fuwa. She follows Shou to Tokyo so that he may realize his dream of becoming a famous singer. When his dream is realized, Kyouko overhears the truth behind his decision to bringing her with him: he was using her as a maid.

Shocked and enraged, Kyouko swears to take revenge by outdoing him in show business. With a new look and a new attitude, she joins LME, the agency where Ren Tsuruga (Shou's rival and the #1 actor of LME) works, in the hopes of achieving her goal of destroying Shou's pride.

Along the way, she discovers her true self, makes new friends (and enemies), and finds herself at the heart of some interesting situations that will change her life, and the lives of all others involved, forever.

The manga which started it all. (For me)

The manga which made me interested in japanese mangas and the starting point of my addiction. Any words i would use to describe it would fall short. All the characters are so well thought out and each and every single one of them has some kind of development or attribute. Even some of the more shallow characters will show personality.
While other mangaka choose to stick to stereotypes I truly appreciate the effort this mangaka makes into this manga's plot and characters.

Skip beat started as a really funny comedy, but as the story goes on the romance side begin to grow, and more and more characters are poured on to it. Despite the slow development (not mentioning the rate new chapter comes out), the author stays true to the root of Kyouko's character.

I love this series, but as much as I want it to end, I find myself still enjoying each and every chapters. I'm normally a shonen reader, but Skip Beat being a shoujo series has been an exception on my reading list. There's so much fun in it, and although I tend to avoid romantic scenes, those are so well depicted here because it's presented from the artistic point of view of Kyouko's.

Slow updates, but still the best!

As many other reviewers have stated, Skip Beat has very slow updates (new chapter once a month). But I will be seeing this one through till the very end because I know it's worth it.

I have been following Skip Beat for a very long time now and have yet to come across another shojo that grabs at me like this one does. The characters have developed so nicely over time that they have become almost "real" to me. And I think what makes it this way is the ever-developing romance between Kyoko and Ren. Yes, it can be painstakingly slow at times, but their relationship is so special that I don't care.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
You get to see, as the audience, their relationship develop from sort-of enemies, to kouhai-senpai, to friends, to the gray area between friends and lovers that they are in now. I love that their relationship has reached a level where they unthinkingly turn to one another in their times of need and don't question how much the other one means to them...all the while keeping their feelings secret from one another.
The depth of their relationship is a rare breed, in my opinion.

The mangaka is very skilled at balancing drama with comedy and creating a perfectly entertaining blend! This manga is FUNNY, especially at the first half of the series. All the characters, especially Kyoko, have great personalities and make for a very entertaining bunch. Paired right alongside with the comedy are some moments of a much more serious nature (sadness, suspense, angst, and even some sexy times!) that make this series so engaging and exciting. In example,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the Setsuka/Cain scene in the hotel room with Kyoko straddling Ren was enough to give me a heart attack! The juxtaposition of normal innocent/pure Kyoko and this new bold/confident Setsu was so titillatingly unexpected...I was definitely freaking out over that scene!!

Great characters, great plot, great mix of comedy/drama/romance/etc...I think this manga has something for everyone. I would suggest waiting to start this manga however until it's closer to completion so that way you won't have to suffer through the slow updates like the rest of us!

After guzzling down this series over the last week, I'm quite surprised how much I enjoyed it. The manga has an incredible energy to it (particularly in the first few years) where almost every panel is used to tell a joke or entertain the audience. Although Kyouko can be quite over the top, I was quite impressed with how well she was handled. Instead of turning into the self insert actor love cliche I was expecting, we see the gradual change of her hatred finally opening up. There are many heartwarming scenes worth reading for.

That said, this manga does have quite a few faults. There are two large droughts in quality (Ren's arc in Dark Moon and Ren's movie arc) that really are drudges to read through. These droughts mostly coincided with a focus on the romance. Really, this series is best when focusing on Kyouko (specifically her turning into her roles) and the supporting cast, which oddly gets very little screentime in a 14 year series.

That said, this manga is worth its faults. Kyouko is a very entertaining and heartfelt character that you don't see enough in shoujo.

Disclaimer: I've read this 100% through scanlation so I regret it's a completely different and bias experience compared to reading the professional translations by VIZ, which I recommend you do.

If you've never read this before, judge whether you want to continue or not by reading till the Devil vs. Angel Music Video arc (forgot whether it was chapter ~40 or ~60). That was the point of no return for me i'm right now suffering RIghT nOW.

I went through much fantastic emotion with the very earlier part of the series but I'm currently on ch229 and every other chapter has been so thick with close up reactions, choppy pretense, and sitting-around-a-table for exposition that i don't even know what's happening anymore because i don't. care. about 97% of what is going on.

I just want my main couple SHIPPED and DONE already and it still hasn't happened yet.

May kami save us all.

Ever read something and think to yourself "wow...I literally cannot pull myself away." Basically skip beat is dark magic that somehow gets into your soul and roots itself in there. I'm deeply in love with it.

While it may seem daunting (at over 200 chapters + ongoing) it is by far one of the most worthwhile manga you can possibly read. And I think to satisfactorily bring it to a conclusion it needs at least 5-10 volumes... at least. It literally wouldn't be half as amazing as it is if it didn't have this many chapters. THE WHOLE POINT IS to properly convey and create a realistic (hahaha) tone with characters who you can fall in love with. Characters that aren't just a two dimensional drawing. I don't know about anyone else, but both Ren and Kyoko are very much real to me. I feel like they live and they breathe. It's really amazing to be able to continuously see their characterization evolve.

The story itself is amazing. It took something that could have possibly been cliche and bland and turned it into a masterpiece. Kyoko is truly one of the best shoujo characters I've ever seen. (And trust me... I've seen more than I can even remember) she's mentally and physically strong, but sometimes trips up. She's got her flaws, but by they serve to make her human. And best of all... Her self worth is no longer tied to a man. She's become her own woman. I absolutely adore Ren as well. Alot of people seem to think he's a bad male lead and that he's like pretty much every other shoujo male lead (a perfect jerkpants). Sooooo wrong. Ren is one my few favorites... he's perfect... but he's not. He's actually rather gentle to our leading lady, but isn't afraid to knock some sense into her. Yeah he gets mad at her for stupid reasons, but I think its more like he's mad at himself. A very mature character who really respects the woman he loves. *swoons*

The only bad thing about it I can think of is the art work and and plot in the beginning. Overlook it amd you'll fall in love. BTW Sorry about the long rant/ comment... I really love this manga.

Although the updates are slow, the author makes sure to keep the plot going! She actually uses each chapter to build onto the character development. Little to none fillers! <3 Highly recommended. Reading the latest update just makes me want to reread it all over again. Too bad that they didn't continue with the anime... It's way too good to not have a continuation. Maybe Skip Beat! will get picked up again, considering how all of the great shojo animes are being made (e.g. Kamisama Hajimemashita, Akatsuki no Yona, Akagami no Shirayukihime...)

This is undoubtedly one of the best shoujo manga I have ever read and trust me, I have read many. When I first read the description of Skip Beat, I wasn't impressed. I thought it would be one of those boring manga's with weak heroine and jerk of a hero, with heroine probably overdoing the revenge thing.
But OH MY GOD, this turned out to be simply amazing. The firs chapter is cliched, but after that, it just got me hooked. The plot was well thought out and even better were the characters. The best thing about this is, how the characters are very well thought out and react exactly how they are should in a situation according to their character description.
I do agree that the love story appears slow, but truth is, after you are betrayed like that and also have several other past matters to sort out, it ain't that easy to fall in love, lest alone accept it. It shows reality for me. So, according to me the pace of romance is completely fine.
The growth of the character is very apparent as the story progresses, with the leads making mistakes and learning from them in time, which is wonderful.
