Zankoku na Kami ga Shihaisuru portrays the tale of two stepbrothers - Jeremy and Ian - as they each pursue their separate paths towards redemption.
Jeremy, a sensitive but outgoing 16-year-old, is delighted by news of his neurotic and excitable mother's remarriage to a wealthy British man. But his sweet-talking new stepfather, Greg, soon begins to exhibit disturbing traits... He is a sadist and a rapist, and loses no time in making Jeremy his target. Jeremy's shocked and guilt-stricken behaviour arouses the suspicions of Greg's free-spirited son, Ian, who quickly sets about unearthing evidence to tie him to the crime. But in doing so, he also discovers the details of Greg's abusive behaviour.
Caught between the desire to punish a murderer and the obligation to atone for his father's sins, Ian slowly finds himself developing feelings towards his stepbrother. Is it love? Or lust and a desire for conquest? He wonders whether he shares Greg's proclivities, but is unable to resist being drawn into a painful but passionate relationship with Jeremy.

This story is so complex. It is like the perfect eye opener for those whom get caught up in the fairy tale of a perfect married life and romance. So many emotions are stirred up in me i am like a raw nerve just from reading this. Not for the faint of heart true enough. I feel tho it is still a must read. The art work is wonderful the history i just love it all and as i wait for more chapters. I have such fears for not just the two young men but everyone...

Personally dig the art. There's this decorative yet static feeling to the manga.
Also, as much as I love Yoneda Kou's Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai, I wouldn't say it's any more believable than Zankoku na Kami ga Shihaisuru. Both are different depictions of psychological state(s) of a rape victim though I think Zankoku na Kami ga Shihaisuru confronts the more uglier aspects/details. Also, the characters here are understandably "difficult." To think that a wonderful, selfless man you love will save you from yourself and solve everything is a fairy tale. It takes more work than just romance. But anyway, both mangas are very dear to me. ...Still, a score of 2?! Really?!?!

So first things first, the art is typical 90s manga art. It's not that pretty to look at.
There's a lot of weird faces, awkward anatomy and let's not forget ridiculous hairdos and outfits!
That being said, I really liked reading this manga.
It's incredibly deep, dark, disturbing. It feels very realistic, like a documentary or a real story.
This does not take place in the crazy world of manga, much less the even crazier world of yaoi land.
The protagonist suffers, a lot.
The manga is mostly about how these things gradually, slowly happen. How he reacts and how they change him, driving him slowly insane.
While not everyone might like this approach, I loved how it was just very realistic.
A boy who cares a lot for his mother and is being forced into sex and threatened with his mother's health or happiness might not be able to just say "stop".
This covers the basic themes of sexual abuse. He wants help, he wants out, but he doesn't always have the courage to just say those things out loud, especially while he knows that nobody might believe him, or that his mother and others might suffer.
The other people might seem ignorant but come on, even if you notice your child acting strangely, realistically speaking, who would honestly think of even the slightest possibility of abuse? Not many. That's why there's many many more cases of abuse happening than are recorded.
To me, his slowly succumbing mind seems very believable. He can't think straight anymore, loses his rational thinking... even thinks about his own death or ending it all by killing his step-father.
It's beautifully told, and sort of poetic sometimes.
So, this is realistic, slow... it's torture for the protagonist both physically and emotionally.
Do not read this if you are looking for something light, happy or funny!
If you enjoy dark, gloomy, no-hope kind of stories though, and the theme of sexual abuse and all the details on how characters deal with it then give it a shot!

You'll need some patience because this just drags on and on and on, and to be honest, I skipped some text because it was just too long for me as well.
It takes forever before things start happening, like major changes, and before Jeremy finally, FINALLY confesses what happened to him, and even longer before people start believing him but those moments are very moving and so I still think it's worth the read.
Also, don't stop reading just midway, go at least to volume 9 or so, because it has some big changes that might blow your mind!

TOO. MUCH. TRAUMA. Jeremy never gets a break (no pun intended)! I think he didn't even smile after ch3 or ch4!
I really enjoyed the psychology themes, emotional suspense and symbolism. The homosexual tones (which aren't that graphic, explains why it's a shounen ai not yaoi) makes it better for me.
The progress is VERY slow, and things get repeated few times, but that's good to let you immerse in the story and FEEL it. Never in my whole life have I HATED a fictional character this much (maybe Akito from fruit Basket).
Definitely a gem that you won't forget.

i swear to God, i regret every bit of the time I spent to read this manga. The theme is SOOOO heavy, the bad guy is SOOO bad and there seems no way out for this poor boy (I'm currently reading vol 6). I've skipped all the scenes that showed this guy's criminal activity but still, just reading his lines and seeing how this person got his way with that poor boy, i feel really bad. If that was a real case and I knew him, I would report him to the police.
I think that the mangaka chose a very tough theme for her work, I don't like the way things turned out but I'll keep on reading it just to see that criminal die a dog's death. That's my honest opinion.
And another thing is, since I read so far in the story and I don't have any experience on this subject myself, I read many articles about this thing because I still can't stomach how all these people saw Jeremy's behavour and none of them came up with the truth. Here I'll write down some suspicious things that may mean that a child went through this kind of abuse, that these articles suggest (source: infokids.gr)-->a) the child knows far too many info about sex, b) has trouble sleeping like nightmares, etc c)has lack of appettite d)his/her grades suddenly drop e)avoids or grows extremely attached to a certain adult f) his mood changes from normal without any reason g)talks to a new, older friend and accepts money or gifts but you don't know who gave them, h)has signs of self destructive behavour, i)traumas on the body( bruishes, redness around the marital area) j)wants to run away from home
Seriously now. All these signs were there in Jeremy's case and all the people didn't have a clue? I know this is fiction and the author wanted to make this a long-running series that's why noone found out but my point is, that's very unrealistic and scary at the same time. Should stop right about here but I guess you've got an idea of how I feel about this story.

imagine yourself in his case, it's not that easy. That man was a narcissist and "had the upper hand".
He was also scared of hurting her mum whom he loves so much he would sacrifice himself for her.
There was no one who could help him and even if there was, he was too scared to get them involved... and later he didn't trust anyone. A boy whose life was so normal turned into a nightmare he could never imagine... I mean he was pretty naive (at first). I had "such a normal" life like him and I could have never imagined that men like him exist... and when something like that happens for the first time you don't know what to do, you don't know where to get help 'cause you're not used for stuff like this and you didn't have hardships in life to make you strong enough to defend yourself.

Like too exaggerated and too odd and too weird. If you want an amazing yaoi about characters trying to navigate their way in the present with their damaged pasts, go with Yoneda Kou's Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai; I promise, it is a million times better (and more believable) than this fossilized, early 90's manga. Also, Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai's characters are much less than annoying and realistic.

I didn't like it at all. I thought I could finish it but couldn't. I personally disliked it so much, because of the way I was raised. Some poor kid who had a normal life is seriously traumatized and becomes mentally diseased because of one man. He is being raped continuously by his step- father, but doesn't want his mother to get hurt so keeps quiet. One person finds out, but is also too scared to tell. I didn't understand this, he is one human man! Not van hellsing or a powerful crime syndicate member. Eventually, the kid reaches his max point( I would've been reach mine) and kills the crazy rapist, and accidentally his mother. Anyway, the child has seriously become demented after committing murder. I was so eager to hurry and finish it, but the author procrastinates the series Pointlessly. Really, the kid should've got professional help or told his mother. If she can't handle it and kills herself or gets a heart attack. In my opinion she should have taken the role as a parent. Everyone in this catastrophe of a family had something wrong. The child for keeping it a secret, it a parents job to take of the child. The mother not being adequate or competent enough for her child to trust her with her own responsibilities. The step-father for being a selfish and childish rapist. Natasha for being scared of a single man. Ian wasn't really at fault, because none of this was to his knowledge nor is it under his responsibility. Though, I believe if he was more attentive to his family or knew his family he could have prevented this, but it not common for a child to doubt their guardian especially if their a single parent. The characters to me needed improvement and a better details to get to the main events. As it was also unnecessarily prolonged even if the events happened over a large span of time the reader should have to see the frivolous actions. I didn't finish it so maybe it got better after chapter 39. However, I doubt it. For the first shounen ai I've read in two years this is a dissapointment. I will stick to yaoi and heterosexual romance. This book seems to prove without the sexual interaction of a gay male couple, the author has to fill the pages with redundancy.

This is by far one of the most horrible manga stories I've read, but also one of the best.
I was completely dragged in by the story. It's cruel, vomit-inducing and depressing, but it's so beautifully executed. This is a believable (though extreme) tale of sexual abuse and the darkest parts of society. Truly disheartening. It's so sad to see Jeremy slowly fall into despair and insanity. How his personality changes.
This manga is heavy. It's an emotional roller coaster that swings between complete loss of hope and short periods of improvement, just to swing into despair again.
This is ugly and painful, but it's also an incredibly beautiful story. Not for the faint-hearted. But for someone who can tolerate dark stories, this is an amazing read. I ended up reading the 12 scanlated volumes in a day, and even if it's heavy, it's so absorbing that you just need to read on.
I definitely recommend it. Truly. It's probably on my top 5 of favorite mangas.
