Shurei Hong, destitute but of noble birth, has always dreamed of working as a civil servant in the imperial court of Saiunkoku, but women are barred from holding office. The emperor Ryuki, however, refuses to take command, leaving everything to his advisors. Shurei is asked to become a consort to the emperor to persuade the neíer-do-well ruler to govern.
Shurei enters the palace as Ryukiís consort, but he has yet to seek her out. It is rumored that men, not women, share the emperorís bedchamber. Shurei must think of a way to stop the emperor from shirking his responsibilities, but she has to find him first!

Not for anyone who can't stand politics. This series is based on a series of josei novels, which is why the plot develops so slowly and intricately. It is historical fantasy and tends to lapse into happy perfect shoujo moments, but as the series progress, things become more complex. Enjoyable for those who have a lot of patience.
I adore what I've read of the manga so I decided to check out the anime and it's a total snooze. If the story of the manga is the same as the anime, then it's pretty boring.... just Shuurei being perfect politics lady and not much else.
I really like the anime and the manga - the art is wonderful, and the character are more dark then the anime. One of the things that keeps me coming back for more is that I want to find out who does Shuuri end up with - Me, Iím cheering for the Emperor and its not because he is the Emperor.
The manga seems really good and the anime seems alright [ but the manga looks way better] the art work looks really great and there are so many sparkling moments .... anyway does anyone know what book it's based on? or ifs it's in english
gorgeous draings with great laughs
i'm a sucker for shoujo and of course all shoujo has the typical guy meets girl and fall in love that kinda stuff. this manga is sorta like that but the jokes are funny and the drawings are 100% mouth-watering. why on earth do we not get guys like that in real life???? *winks*
Originally this is a series of novels, adopted to an anime and now to manga form. The artwork is very cute but the story gets boring after a while. Should be interesting for the first couple of volumes though.
Drawings and art was the first thing that caught my attention not to mention the story .. however its kinda typical .. but this story got its own flavour .. worth reading when u find nothing to do but to read manga ... btw .. the manga is ten times better than the anime .. so one advice .. start with the manga .. then watch the anime .. ^.^/
Lovely manga which has been adapted in a lovely anime. I found some covers here:http://www-personal.umich.edu/~weyrbrat/fanfic/anime/saiunkoku/index.html Maybe there are more volumes around...
No matter how you look it at, its your typical shoujo myth story. Everything is sugar coated and everything just seems to work out perfectly, its got a really nice addicting story and its good as a casual read. It's still got comedy elements dispite being a fictional historical manga. The story is quite confusing at times because the pace at which the story runs is quite fast, one thing flows directly into the next. But that dosnt spoil the story one bit.
