Cane Lele was born into the fashion industry. Her mother, Ye Fei Yi, was Taiwan's top model, and her father was also a model, until a tragic airplane crash left Lele without parents. Therefore, it is no surprise that Lele hates the industry, thinking it superficial and unnecessary.

Raised by her maternal grandmother, Lele reaches seventeen before she is sucked in by her mother's sister, Ye Fei Hong, a fashion model agent (and former model), convinces the reluctant Lele to model. Lele had been adverse to the whole idea, until she sees a photo shoot of popular American model Angus Lanson, and she begins to see modeling as an art form.

When Aunt Fei Hong's magazine editor invites Angus Lanson to a meeting of all the top fashion ambassadors, Lele is invited to meet him and is very curious. She does not know that Angus' twin elder brother, Eros Lanson, is secretly accompanying his brother. This obviously leads to confusion and is the start of a charming story of Lele's goals: fashion in NYC, becoming a top model, and love?

One of my Favourites

I totally love this manga! Art's good, story's nice, fashion is awesome, and there's character growth! (Added bonus!)

I disagree with Baniita. Try to get past chapter 29, OK? Yes, she's annoying in the beginning, but she grows. And please don't hate on her because of her grandma. *spoiler alert* Privileged people like us have no idea how hard it is to lose the only person that looked after them. People react to things differently, so please calm down. And just like how straight people can become gay, gay people can become straight. It's the soul that counts, not the body. Don't worry so much about how it's worded. Angus is very important to Eros' story, and is a part of Lele's growth, too. You are reviewing the work without getting to the main story.

Potential readers, please don't be dissuaded. I recommend this manhua, especially considering Nicky Lee's art is unique to the style and the story is enjoyable.

Similar to NANA.

I'm not a NANA fan although I liked Paradise Kiss a lot. I was looking forward to this one too but I was hoping it wouldn't have that much of drama like NANA did.

Let's start with the female lead, Lele; Some people say that Lele is far from your typical shoujo lead but I would disagree; Do you say that because her mother was a famous model? But besides that, she is your typical 16-year-old who is obsessed with Angus, a male model. And most of the times she is hyper and a fangirl. How is that different? Only very later she becomes more serious and she stops being a fangirl. But she gets involved in constant drama. She does not differs with Chae-Gyung from Goong. But moving forward.

At first Lele's goal is not to become a model, she doesn't seem to have any goals for the future. Surely her mother was a famous model but Lele herself was not interested in the industries. Only until her aunt forced her and because of her

grandma's death.

And I wouldn't say The One is so realistic. Surely it has some psychological stuff going-on but some situations aren't that realistic. For example, Lele becomes so popular. Was it her mother's name? No, her mother was somewhat forgotten in the modeling industries. Was it her looks? No, there were many other models who looked better than her with a more defined image. Her aunt? Well, her aunt was very strict with her. But somehow she becomes special and then everyone focus on her. In 2 years you get to see her with very famous names. Example, I watched Kaleido Star, a great shoujo anime and the main heroine's purpose is the same; To rise to fame. But she had so many obstacles and many people criticized her and rejected her, unlike Lele of The One.
Second, Eros who is Angus's twin brother. He is 21 at the beginning and he is already a famous movie director somehow, yet we get to see him at the streets pretending the beggar.

The One starts comical and the beginning was entertaining. But it added more and more drama like Goong does, like NANA does and it became annoying. It seems that drama sells a lot nowadays.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
And of course it was obvious that Eros and Angus had a bad background. But it was disturbing that Angus was the lover of some old guy just because the old guy blackmailed him. To think that Lele was obsessed with Angus once.

But I'm glad that The One is showing some bad aspects of the industries. Other than that, it felt quite inspired by NANA, I detected some similarities. For example,
- Lele is somewhat like Nana Komatsu; Nana was a fangirl of a celebrity too, like Lele is. Heck, even Lele's later appearance resemble Nana's.
- Takumi and Eros/Langus have such a similar physical appearance. All of them have a bad background who is pierced inside their hearts.
- Both continue to drag with a lot of pathetic drama.
- And generally, both NANA and The One have the same artistic style.

The artwork is okay, not that great though. The covers are better. Plus many times you can't tell who is Eros or Angus.

I tried to like it, but it disappointed me.

It's different from other manga/manhwa/manhua i've read. Although it involves fame and things like that i didn't hate it, in fact i love it. The characters are humorous, and they're awesome. The art is wonderful she actually looks pretty when she's modeling. The heroin isn't the always successful with a few failure kind of girl. Reading the manhua is like watching her life and how she's growing, without noticing it she's grown into a woman!

i've read skip beat (my first shoujo) and glass mask (1/2 of whats scanned), cat street, and all the other less popular modeling and acting manga's but this one has got to be one of the best, lele eventually maturing as a model, the beggar, her mom her aunt i love all of them! really original and as a plus Eros is sooo hot, he is the best male lead EVER! yes the story did get pretty retarded at one point (i stopped reading) but it gets back on track and im in love all over again!

Wow. I just read 6 volumes of this manhua, and I have to say that it´s REALLY good!
The characters have development as the story progresses, like for example, Lele becomes stronger and more determined (because of something that will happen to her grandmother, which I can´t tell here), and I like the fact that the story revolves around fate, and sometimes there are kinda unexpected situations!
The art is amazing! Oh, and besides Taiwan, the story is also set in Japan, and later New York (!), because of Lele´s career, it´s very creative isn´t it! And you get to see this world of fashion, and plus the romance is also not very rushed, and as you read the story, well, when I finished reading the 6th volume, it made me realize that all this time they Eros and Lele were meant to be with each other but they still haven´t realized that one is the other´s strength. Well, Lele "unconsciously" relys on him a lot! But she also moved him with her words...
I really am in love with this manhua, and the bishies really remind me of Takumi from Nana! But after some time you get used and they kinda have their own personalities so they´re not that similar, maybe only the face.

Something worth reading

This was one manga where the character development went from zero to hundred in the first few chapters so that the manhua jia had the opportunity to use the mid-to-last chapters to describe the drama faced by the characters in the modelling world. (possibly real-life dramas, but nothing too exaggerated I hope!)

I recommend this manhua because of how real Lele could be in terms of personality. She is not weak like the other female leads, and she doesn't cry as often but she still cries because she's a girl and she works hard for what she wants - granted that she's quite lucky because she turned out to be so successful. The male leads are okay - despite having long hair they still look great in the manhua so plus points for the good art factor here.

Plot-wise there isn't much scheming going around but definitely a lot of drama concerning most of the characters. Depending on your tolerance-level sometimes it might frustrate you but it's fun reading how the characters deal with it and how some of them support each other through it.

I recommend this manhua for those just looking for a relaxing but stimulating read, something to pass their time without putting much thought into it.

The first time I read this, it was when it first came out. Now there's 11 volumes! I wish I didn't catch up so fast. I really like the story line. Lele developed into a great model and her personality matured (even if she's still silly around Eros, Angus and her friends! I'm excited for the future chapters!

This is pretty different from Nicky Lee's previous works. I love how her art has evolved, and I like that there's a lot more character development in this manga. I actually like how romance takes a backseat, it's quite believable given Eros' character and past. It also elevates the manga to be more than a simple love story.

However, the story falters in the later chapters, and recent developments feel really contrived as the tone of the story shifts back and forth from tragic and disturbing to light and fluffy, even within the same chapter.

Will write more at a later date smile

as i have expected, most comments would do the comparing thing to other manga, not just manga but famous ones too. certainly, i would love to(compare) but having this manhua giving me a 'similar' feel to a manga i have REALLY enjoyed is something that makes it great. people can never help but compare but i'd say it's one very good manhua. *thumbs up*
