I started reading Cantarella, which is based on real events. Ok it's not 100% accurate, there's the odd magic and devil possession and major yaoi undertones but it's still pretty accurate from what I can tell from comparing it with the encarta articles 😛

So that got me thinking: are there any other series that are more or less accurately based on historical events?

the closest thing that i know of is Vagabond.

Vagabond loosely conforms to Miyamoto Musashi's life.

I think Historie is vaguely based on real events as well, but I don't actually know.

Vinland saga is suppose to be historically acurate, at least the major events. And it's a kick ass manga too.

Cesare, also about Borgia Family but it's more well written and reseached than Cantarella.

edit : events in Versailles no Bara, Shana oh Yoshitsune, Buddha, Kaze Hikaru also actually happened, though I think most of them also feature additional stories and characters by the mangaka.

Anatolia Story. Now, I am SURE that one has lots of references to things that actually happened, because... I checked on wikipedia to see if the name of the Egyptian and Abyssinian kings matched with reality, and accidentally discovered a major spoiler of the plot:

Namely, I had just gotten to the point when Zannanza and Kail are competing to see who will go to Egypt to become King, so I got curious and was like "Since Tutankhamon and Neferteri really existed, does that mean Kail and co did too?" So, foolish me, I went to wikipedia and clicked Neferteri or Nefertiti - I don't remember - and I get this paragraph saying that she was promised in wife to Abyssinian prince Zannanza, so I'm like, "Wow, so it was true?"... and as I read on, I stumbled upon this sentence, "Unfortunately, Prince Zannanza never reached Egypt, because he was attacked and killed en route" I COULD HAVE DIED RIGHT THERE!!! WTF?!

So, yeah, my advice, everyone, is to never, EVER wikipedia an event you're actually reading about in a manga. You can do that AFTER you've finished reading.

Oh, and Anastasia Club is also pretty accurate what with the Eggs and stuff.

Ryuuroden maybe, it's based on the story of the three kingdom in China which of course is real. The events in the manga are based on historical facts if i'm not mistaken. The same can be said about Rurouni Kenshin, some of the events in the manga as i understand it, actually happen in Japan history.

Oh and this one is also based on the story of the three kingdom The Ravages of Time. I haven't read it yet but i'm planning to 🙂

Le Chevalier D'eon, all based on real people. But the anime IMO, WAY better than the manga...
And maybe Spriggan? (never actually read it, but Hilter's in there... reviving dead people yeah... 🤣 )
