I am looking for a story with a unrequited love without a happy ending. I found out I love the psychology about the main character feeling lonely and suffering by realising they can't be together with their love. I'd rather this is the most important storyline, in stead of the unrequited love lingering around after 5 other issues. I love to see the characters being adult and understandable. I don't know if something like this is ever made, since love-stories are bound to have happy endings. So, if you think you know some, please tell me!

Stories like Love in the Mask, without everyone running around like complete lunatics. Koisuru Boukun, only without them advancing in their relationship. Stories like Sangen Tonari no Tooi Hito, only without everything turning out fine at the end. Kimi wa Pet, without the boy actually getting some with the girl.

I don't care if it is yaoi, yuri, shota, loli or whatever, as long as it isn't shoujo or shounen.

So in short:

• reasonable and believable main characters
• unrequited love is the most important issue of the story
• no happy ending, the main character will suffer until the very last page

Golden Days is a pretty good fit. You might not think so when you read the first couple of chapters - but keep with it until the end of volume 1, and then it becomes apparent.

Claudine...! and Bishounen no Koi are almost completely centered on this theme.

There's unrequited love in Aegis and Cantarella; but while the love affair is an important part of the plot, it isn't the main focus of the manga.

There are quite a few one-shots that fit; The Love Letter , Pokerface , Fushou no Musuko and the first two chapters of Sweet Lovin' Baby.

Try Chouchou kumo... its one-shot.
Bus hashiru 3rd story is also one. they're really good.
