You know this typical shounen development: an ordinary school boy discovers he has some power. He's actually a demon slayer or born to be an exorcist or an heir to a vampire king... I want this but with a female protagonist.
Can be shoujo, too, if the plot is the same. "She was born to have sex with demons" isn't a power. XD

loooooooooooooooool!! ahhhh... Sorry, I just had to comment on that...

Let's see... the first thing that popped in my mind was Shugo Chara!, but I'm afraid that that may be a little too... girly? (Granted, I watched the anime... so hearts and pink were frequent during her transformation/power use.)

Same goes with Cardcaptor Sakura... and Gakuen Alice...

Maybe Ghost Hunt? Granted, it's not super fantastic (like magically develop a power orb to annihilate demons), but it's still pretty cool... in a way... ^^|| (I dunno... I just watched the anime)

Anime that I've encountered with this type of story-line:
Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini (season 2 of the Darker than Black story... has nothing to do with season 1 really...)

Jubei-Chan: Secret of the Lovely Eyepatch -- silly humor... but still counts, no?

Maybe Hiiro no Kakera ? The MC was born with some kind of power I think.
Not to mention with Ao no Exorcist ?

Ao no exorcist has a male protagonist.

The anime Blood+ is epic, and it fits imo.

Shoujo:
Reimei no Arcana
Ayashi no Ceres and Fushigi Yuugi and its prequel, I suppose... Similarly, Harukanaru Toki no Naka de, although FushiYugi + Haruka mostly revolve around finding guardians/objects, not exploring the power itself
Hrm... Barajou no Kiss? And I suppose also SLH

I must be able to think of some more...

All I can think of right now is Venus versus virus and Gurenki but Gurenki is kinda "born to have sex with demons". I think Pixy gale might work...she wasn't born with the power but it's transplanted into her.

Gakuen Alice
Pretty much any magical girl one in existence...
I recommend Ghost Hunt too! the anime is awesome, so you should watch that too 😀
Barajou No Kiss (my sister says it's good)
She also likes Platinum Garden
Princess Tutu the anime is awesome! I'm watching it and am suprised how not-gag worthy it is.

I second the Princess Tutu anime. It's absolutely phenomenal. Stick with it through the first seven episodes or so- it's not cliche and monster-of-the-week like it first appears. 🙂

Hmmm what about Juuni Kokki, the anime (or the novels. Both are AWESOME). She discovers that she's the Empress of a magical country in the East, but no really "fantastic power ability" is shown.

The rest are very shoujo-ey and magical girl-y

Cardcaptor Sakura
Barajou no Kiss
Ao no Fuuin - though I wouldn't really recommend this one since I found the protagonist to be very annoying
Alice 19th
Sailor Moon
Love Monster - again, I myself felt like the story was very cliche and trite
