Which side of your brain do you use more?
I originally wanted to comment on another thread talking about this, but it got locked, and I'm going to approach this subject slightly more differently.

Theory:
According to the theory of left-brain or right-brain dominance, each side of the brain controls different types of thinking.
Additionally, people are said to prefer one type of thinking over the other.
For example, a person who is "left-brained" is often said to be more logical, analytical, and objective, while a person who is "right-brained" is said to be more intuitive, thoughtful, and subjective.

According to the left-brain, right-brain dominance theory
The Right Brain
The right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks. Some of the abilities that are associated with the right side of the brain include:

◊ Recognizing faces
◊ Expressing emotions
◊ Music
◊ Reading emotions
◊ Color
◊ Images
◊ Intuition
◊ Creativity
◊ Rhythm
◊ Imagination
◊ Daydreaming
◊ Dimension
◊ ♣Holistic awareness (Concerned with wholes rather than analysis or separation into parts)
◊ Spatial awareness (One's ability to perceive and comprehend the relationship between shapes and areas around them)

The Left Brain
The left-side of the brain is considered to be adept at tasks that involve logic, language and analytical thinking. The left-brain is often described as being better at:

♦ Words
♦ Language
♦ Logic
♦ Critical thinking
♦ Numbers
♦ Reasoning
♦ Analysis
♦ Lists
♦ Linearity
♦ Sequence

♣ - Honestly for this one I wasn't too sure of what it meant. Keep getting different things.

Little fact:
The Right Hemisphere (right side of your brain) controls the left side of your body.
The Left Hemisphere (left side of your brain) controls the right side of your body.

-Sidenote: This thread took a while to make, but I think this is my best looking one to date.

- Which side do you think you use more based on the info above?
- Which abilities brought you to that conclusion.

For my answer ... Meh, I'm tired. I'll opt out my answer here, and make a comment later.

I'm pretty sure I'm a left-brained person. Logic, words, sequence, analysis...yum. Not really a big fan of numbers because I associate that with math, but I can tolerate it. I'm also pretty sure that the only part of myself that associates with the right side of my brain is daydreaming (and a little bit of music).

Interesting topic. I hope by being left-brained, it doesn't make it any harder for me to reach my goals of being ambidextrous, haha. (I'm a righty)

I personally believe that the left brain/right brain dominance theory is a pop psych myth, so my answer is neither.

(Both sides of the brain do different things, yes, but there hasn't been any proof that there is a preference for either one. Also I think it gives someone an excuse to say "since I'm left-brained, I'm not very creative" or "I'll never be good at math because I'm right-brained". Creativity and logic are not mutually exclusive. This is a pet peeve of mine because I feel like a lot of people use it as an excuse to limit themselves.)

*sigh* Although the left-brain, right-brain dominance theory is commonly thought to be like you say pop psych. It is still sometimes used for other things. Like figuring out what type of learner someone may be. (Audio, or ... too tired to think of what the others are)
There are some facts in there. The abilities listed under each side are facts. However saying that one side is more dominate than the other is still a theory, and one that so far has proven to not pan out.

This is really more of "I feel I use this side more", and "because I like associate with these things more" . Not for saying "because I think with this side, I can't do the other". Honestly that's stupid is anyone tries using that as an excuse. That's would be the same as them saying the other side of the brain is dead, and they can only use half of their body.
Way to bring the mood down, on a topic that should be a fun thing to think about. Of course you're entitled to your opinion and thoughts, and sorry you've been around so many people that not only limit themselves, but make excuses. I personally think there's no room for excuses in life, but that's going to get off topic.

Oh I pick the right side of the brain, mostly because of the expressing emotions.

Quote from Fawkes
Also I think it gives someone an excuse to say "since I'm left-brained, I'm not very creative" or "I'll never be good at math because I'm right-brained". Creativity and logic are not mutually exclusive. This is a pet peeve of mine because I feel like a lot of people use it as an excuse to limit themselves.

Though I do believe people have a right/left-brain dominance (along the lines of this theory) just like we have a right/left-hand dominance, I have to agree with your belief that it is an excuse to limit oneself. We are not bound by a dominant trait (just like there are people who are naturally ambidextrous and also there are people who train themselves to be ambidextrous). We may be more clumsy while using a non-dominant side of our body (hand, brain, etc.) but that does not mean we are completely incapable of using that non-dominant side. For example, (being a righty) while I may not be able to write well with my left hand, words do form (even though it's total chicken scratch) and I am fully capable of typing with my left hand and taking a drink from a water bottle that's in my left hand. So when people say: "Since I'm right/left-brained, I can't..." it is an excuse. So I do understand where your pet peeve comes from (so my spiel is not to criticize your beliefs! <3 Its just, going off of what you had said explains my belief a little better)!
Plus, I don't think right/left-brain is really "creativity" versus "logic", those just happens to be the words that best described the list of things for each side of the brain. For example, expressing emotions and intuition can't really be considered "creativity"; while the "logic" side isn't all things related to logic. Not to mention both sides of the brain receive visual and auditory information, the brain just gathers that info and runs it through different parts of the brain (on both sides) so we come to the conclusion of "understanding" or "recognition" of the stimuli that is occurring around us.
Sorry for my rambling but I love these kinds of topics! Bouncing ideas off others is so fun!! bigrazz

Regarding my personal dominance... Well, I have a crazy, wild imagination (that often gets away from me) and I'm an all-around creatively inclined person (music, arts, etc.) and I tend go off on daydreams too but I do love language/words and math is fun.
So, I'd have to say I lean more towards the right side (creative) since those are the things that have always been more natural for me whereas logical stuff I have to work at... pretty hard too. lol biggrin
