Rarity in this genre

There was two big negative reviews so I will try to write something opposite even if sometimes I agree with some statements and I could give mine own negative examples.. Generally I like SF and fantasy so I have found myself in LN/manga/anime fantasy world. One may say with regret that it is not easy to find a bit more grown up and normal from European point of view story of this genre. Especially when you are not interested in sad dramas.

"The New Gate" is very rare exception. Main character - Shin - is grown up very normal guy. He loves only one women and they spend most of their time together. Well... saying the truth there is a small suggestion that it would be nice to change this.As a normal guy Shin is not show off but in exchange he chooses to restrict himself to make his life easier with a goal to find a way to come back to real world. He is kindhearted, respects other people and as a Japanese Shin is very polite to everyone. In negative opinions people miss that even if Shin does not discloses his identity as legendary being then a power showed by him truly astonishes side characters (mainly girls) experiencing it.

Second rarity is that even if there is some kind of harem surrounding main character then as I said before Shin keeps normal relation with one woman. And this happens not because he is thickheaded idiot but because he is normal member of society who can truly love. Mentioned "harem" is not like in another stories composed of blushing girls watching every step of main character. When some side character tries to approach Shin too actively then she is swiftly turned down. There is some kind of balance by few volumes where number of women and men in Shins team is equal. (2/2; 3/3)

Then in general we have one romantic thread (or lets say three adding Tiera whom love is not noticed by Shin and deceased Shins former beloved one). This thread interleaves with all story. Even if Shin and Shnee are separated then it happens for relatively short period of time and they can always communicate by telepathy.

Shin DOES NOT have deviant sister... YEES.

What is very rare most of side characters surrounding main character are grown up. The action is NOT PLACED in a school. (I do not count University in one of volumes).

And something very important. The story itself is very logical (as for this genre), good and bad guys are not idiots but well developed and thinking characters. Kazanami Shinogi is worse writer then for example Maruyama but his quality is still good. I really like first 7 volumes where side quests and characters last longer then in one of them. I prefer Kazanami Shinogi style of writing when author focuses on main characters without side story descriptions from other people point of view. And his main character is not traveling around the world while his bellowed one can only miss him.

So if you are looking for this kind of story and you do not mind that babes around the world will not have an occasion to faint while knowing true identity of main character then "The New Gate" is for you.

Not good

It's just an average novel at best. The author fails in so many ways, he doesn't know how to write an interesting story. The decisions he makes are horrible and it just gets worse and worse the further you read.

The start was pretty promising and nice, but as the mc meets more characters and the romance starts to develop and the author starts to introduce unnecessary drama that just shouldn't be there considering how OP the mc is, the enjoyment I get is reduced more and more and the times I thought "f*ck, I wanna drop this, why am I even forcing myself to read such garbage?" increased as well.

Let's start with the world, it's still way too gamelike. Menus, unexplainable parts, "no network" errors and spells that just can't be explained, not even by magic. Blacksmithing and everything else is never explained properly, all he does is place an ore down and hits it randomly without even knowing how anything works. I don't like how it feels like it's just a fake reality.

Then we come to the mc. First of all, he's ridiculously OP, but somehow this is never shown unless it's convenient. The author limits his powers greatly with a skill with bad excuses as to why he would do so when the mc can destroy everyone if he wants to and is literally invulnerable to anything and everything. Somehow, even when he goes full power he tends to be way too weak considering his stats and skills. When things should end instantly, he fights as if it's a bit challenging. His personality is also kind of annoying, the author pretends he's cool and that he's smart, but he's really not.

Then we get to other characters, I don't really like any of them except for one or two, they feel hollow. Even his new girlfriend pisses me off. His old girlfriend from the death game pisses me off even more though.

I never feel like "I want to read more" or "I can't stop, what'll happen next!?", I always felt kinda bored but not bored enough to drop it until the annoyances stacked up. The attempts at comedy sometimes only makes it worse, no one would laugh at that crap.

The author decided to make it so that the mc had a weird sob story and that he had a girlfriend back in the deathgame that he lost which made him go crazy. I absolutely hate her, everything from appearance to personality. She also seems to play an important role later on and it's so cliché I couldn't believe it at first. I always feel disgusted when mcs have a previous girlfriend who they love deeply when they're supposed to build a harem, scoring different girls and falling in love with them. It gets in the way, how could readers like some subhuman pig girlfriend that isn't even presented properly, we can't see how they got together and what happened, so she's just in the way.

This brings us to romance, god, I haven't cringed that much in a while. This was one big part of why it was getting worse and worse several volumes in. The mc haven't officially become a couple with anyone, yet everyone have started to act as if it's a romcom and not the good types, the bad types that are super cliché and extremely boring, not to mention repetitive. We're talking about the girls, especially one of them, glaring at the mc and punishing him or at least scolding him whenever he does ANYTHING to other girls. Be it giving them items that they need to protect themselves, looking at them(not in a perverted way), being close to them(for any reason) or accidents such as seeing someone naked because their armor broke. They will act as if they're his wives and the mc will demonstrate the perfect japanese male ultimate technique of being a f*cking doormat that lets them trample on him however they want, as if he truly did something wrong. It doesn't matter that he did absolutely nothing wrong, he will act as if he did when they confront him, shrinking back and having no balls or spine whatsoever. So, possessive, extreme girls and a male that can't say no even when he gets unjustifiably accused. That's a recipe for a garbage novel.

So, seeing how it just got worse and worse, how nothing interesting ever happened, how the world was extremely boring and couldn't immerse me at all seeing how bad the author is at writing a good story, I felt like it was time to drop this. The things I've mentioned is just a few of many more huge flaws. I pray that I'll never have to waste my time on anything this author writes every again. The score it has received her is absolutely not something it's worthy of. Perhaps people who scored had just read the first few volumes, because at that time I could reluctantly give this a 7/10 or 8/10 because it had a lot of interesting ideas at the start.

Slowly Bored to Death

This series slowly goes downhill after every chapter. Just him acting like he's weak makes it annoying as it is. I give it a seven for the first volume was average in my opinion. Afterwords though I'd drop it down to a five, so I'll leave it with a six. Just his companions in trouble and him just fooling around pretending.

Pretty average, lacking ambition

Long story short, its about a player transported to real-life game world and trying to find his way back to our earth.

The long story, when he steps into this new world, it has been fast forwarded couple hundreds of years and also due the transformation from game to reality, lots of changes have taken place. The geography, history, factions and game mechanics are all different. The general population is much weaker compared to the game world and they use dumbed down and nerfed game abilities/skills/spells, most original game mechanics & knowledge have been lost and now regarded as ancient, powerful secrets. Seems like a pretty awesome setting right? But...

The MC, Shin, of course being a player retains all these original abilities, crafting professions, items and stats so he is pretty much OP(OP=Overpowered). Add to the fact that at the start of the novel he was rewarded with another OP stats boost/title due to being the hero of an apocalyptic event, he is friggin OP. Furthermore, previously in the game world he and his guild were the top, most powerful, most feared players, so he is even more OP in combat and even more OP in blacksmithing. He can craft super OP weapons and armor. Oh and his NPC companions are also considered OP in combat and crafts in the new world but they're still much weaker than players.

He starts out by finding his NPC companions(think NPC companions in Star Wars The Old Republic MMO or Mass Effect companions) who have, within the few hundred years have split up and established themselves famously well in the new world, there are also NPCs belonging to his guild members too. These NPCs have transition from the normal AI NPCs to full blown real life characters, i.e. they gain emotions, attitude, thought and personal agendas, i kinda like how the author sprinkles such elements into the novel. He also ends up meeting other players transported into the new world. His primary focus is to find hints on the happenings of the world and how to return back to Earth. He is a happy-go-lucky and kind so for the most part, lots of charity work i.e. saving people and being friendly to the folks, making more friends. What ticks me off is that he is unfortunately portrayed as the Good Guy with a great sense of justice and exceeding high morals, he'll stick his foot into anything that is not his business if it involves justice, personally i find this kills the immersion of the story as i'm an advocate of realism in novels. He also strives to keep a low profile as him as his guild are considered legendary figures in this new world so he wants to avoid the trouble and hassle of fights and faction politics. Probably a lot of readers get pissed off with this since he never goes all out, doesn't do anything epic, keeping everything stealth even when he is so OP. Which is actually the right choice, cos no doubt theres bound to be OP enemies in the future but i get that feeling of frustration from the readers because the narrative tends to get boring, monotonous & predictable that way, it turns into a 'slice of life of an adventurer' kinda story. Moreover his lack of ambition and simple wish of wanting to return to earth made the novel lose out on any great plot armor or grandiose storytelling.

So yea, that's that! The novel so far is pretty much very average in everything.
I feel this phrase best describe this novel: "MC and Co. are so OP but the adventures & story are never OP". The lack of ambition in the story makes for a boring plot...
Maybe it gets more exciting in later volumes but it'll be awhile since translations are quite slow at 1 mini-chapter every 2-3 months.

The story starts off like SAO but he stays behind and such but with double the stats from the game. So we have another OP Mc like most genere like this, Basicly put Mc is strong but hides it and yeah its understandable due to it being on god level but come on he has no sense of purpose now that he is in that world permanently... Even if it's to find a way back home or try to find old friends and check on unfinished things from his game era then yeah that'ed be fine but no he has no sense of purpose other then going witht he flow and being modest to almost anyone who is high leveled in the worlds sense... It'd be better if he'd have a anger problem it'd make the situations much better like in Shield hero

The story is alright, everything that doesn't have to do with the MP is alright. The MP has the personality everyone expects a good person to have. Still, he holds 0 interest towards anything around him. I understand that making a perverted character is god shit tier, but having an MP that won't follow any kind of path is .. bland. I mean, why the heck would you introduce the hero to new powers only to show his humble side each time?

I Mean he`s a powerful dude with powerful items AND abilities.Yet he doesn`t use any of it.He`s just like a a HUGE pussy knowing that he could do so many amazing stuff yet he still hides his power, pretending he`s a weak and shit.I mean why the fuck would you do that?!If your strong dont hide,But don`t boast about it either.Youre a fucking hero for gods sake. Also it`s your best chance if you want your former companions to find you, cause if they heard rumor about another high humans in the world,of course they would wanna go there.

One of the better ones of this genre.

So okay we have an OP protagonist who is trapped in an mmorpg ala Sword Art Online, kicker is he's still trapped AFTER he beats the baddie of the game and is now the only "human" player in the game world. That's pretty interesting but nothing too far out of the mould. What makes this series notable for me is that the MC is a kindhearted guy who is NOT a thick-headed pervert (so far) and has shown, early in the story, genuine feelings of affection (not sure if love, yet) towards his female NPC comrade whom he sees as a "real" person. This is a notable improvement from the standard dumbass "heroes" that don't mind being pervy but can't handle true love even when it's thrown at them. Story is typical of the genre but so far am enjoying it mostly because of the MC as I described above.

Although I'm not sure why the author would include a beginning as a 'death game' if he/she were just going to gloss over it, I'm glad it was glossed over. Too many stories like that focus too much on the death part, so this is a refreshing story to read.

Yes, this is another super over powered protagonist. This does not mean he goes looking for fights to show off, but he also doesn't hide his abilities to the point of endangering others. This right here is what makes me enjoy reading. He is a good guy who never hesitates to do what he should. And his accidental nonchalant attitude had a hilarious effect at times. What's not to like?
