So first up: I haven't read the novels so this is purely based on the Manga. Also, please read this after reading the other reviews to compare.
Death march review in 2025? Gawd.. I reread this title because of the news of the web novel coming to a closure some time ago. So now I'm at chapter 131, the newest release as per written.
So yeah surprisingly this series is still going. And to be honest, it's probably around midway or 2/3 of plot, storywise. BIG spoiler:
Demon lord fight; collaborations with standard isekai hero archetype; genre breaking from medieval knights and magic to sci fi.
What got me hooked to this series, around 10 years ago, was the initial buildup, when the protagonist, Satou, trained his slaves in the dungeon, give better equipment, then the tower ascension mechanics where he fought increasing difficulty enemies on the second arc, and so on. This RPG like progression was novel when isekai was still starting to get popular. After that, because the releases were slow, and the stories of a subplot tend to be long, I forgot and reconnect to this series quite a few times.
So what you get in this story:
- Cooking, lots of food and eating too;
- Equipment upgrades, forging, blacksmithing, tuning;
- spare clothes so they do change outfit every other arc;
- Loot, books, and scrolls hoarding;
- Increasing harem members but never attached like the slaves;
- OP fights, mostly because Satou is too strong and the enemy is normal human/monster.
- Aristocratic antics, where greed and power sometimes accompanied by evil, sometimes just stupidity.
What you're promised but don't get:
Trading and economics. This is missed opportunity because Satou declared himself as a trader. Also the worldbuilding use logistics and economics as reasons of some of the situations happening, between towns, or between nations.
What irritates me:
It takes too long to reunite with the first girl outside the slaves, Zena from the first town.
Then it takes forever to reunite with Nana's sisters. I realized this is a plot choice, because having too many members in the team would make the dynamics hard to convey by the author. But then the story keep adding new girls and sticking them with Satou, so I asked in my head : why?
I might edit this review later to add more things.
