A thoroughly enjoyable series

I'm not going to lament over its harem based nature, views on women or anything like that because it's a "power fantasy" novel and that's really the main reason many would read something like this. If you have issues with anything like that then don't read this because it's gonna be constantly throwing that in your face non-stop.

So the start for this series is really strong compared to other similar works. A problem I find with others such as Martial World or Martial God Asura is that your kind of just thrown a generic main character with zero backstory initially and then they suddenly get thrown a huge amount of different powers all at the same time and it gets kind of difficult to keep track of it all which puts me off. ATG handles this a little better by keeping it relatively simple and feeding you it a little bit at a time and spacing out his aquisition of powers more. Don't get me wrong, he still gets a bunch of powers very quickly but it's done in a slightly more digestable way in my opinion.

Some SPOILERS from here on;

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I was thoroughly enjoying the series up until a certain arc when he meets his step-brother and parents. If you're reading this series primarily for the harem based aspect then a certain elf girl is introduced here and while it never pretends that she will in anyway join the MC's harem and makes that very clear right from the get go, it still urks me because she's basically the only "attractive" female character that is with someone else other than MC. If she wasn't given much attention then it probably wouldn't be an issue.

However...they spend a disproportionate amount of time focusing on her and your step-brother (who's just a pathetic, soft hearted, boring vanilla guy) and it really made it hard to get through this part, not to mention the issues that are prevalent through what I'd call the main big 1st arc of the entire series are cranked up to 11 here with really long winded repetitive speeches lasting many chapters.

There's some great moments during this time too but it was kind of a struggle...but take heart that after this everything gets so much better and up until the current latest translated chapter as of me writing this (so chapter 1598) it's just been getting more and more awesome. The world gets more interesting, the long dragged out speeches are cut down, the situations the MC ends up in are all great and the women too make you forget all about elf girl because the scale gets that much grander.

In particular the current situation going on is probably the most interesting yet and it's painful having to wait every day just to read one more chapter.

Suffice to say the scale of the world and powers are huge and even though I usually hate timeskips, the way they handle the perception of time in the series actually makes me not care in the slightest. I'd say the only thing I find lacking is more descriptive sex scenes which for the most part range from heavy implications to only very vague details on what actually occured. I assume this is to keep its content rating down but I think it would be better for it if there was a little more spice in the mix.

I'm hoping that the series will continue on for several more thousand chapters at the very least and thankfully it does seem like certain things have been setup and shown that lead me to think this will be the case.

The world building is Wuxia standard. But the story was really complicated, with multiple strands happening everywhere.
But, there are a few issues:
A. I have a problem with - not sex - but the treatment of women, but ... to avoid spoilers ... the violation of trust.
B. And then, I think 550 odd chapters in, the story might have got too tangled, and the author probably has lost a few strands...
C. The pattern is each arc is very similar. This is of course not a problem specific to this work - most long running shounen manga also have this structure, but let us not encounter an ice-frigid queen and be able to guess that by the end of the arc, by the end of the arc he would be a great benefactor to her, and she would be falling for him.
Will keep dipping in, but will skip a lot of it.
-------------
EDIT: 940 chapters
Decided to stop. I like to binge read, so I can see some plot threads that the author left hanging for a long time, and then did a patchwork closure on. I think the author has put in so many girls and plot twists, that he has trouble tying up loose ends.

Great novel

lol i like how everyone talks about sex but in this novel first sex scene is like in chapter around 70 or 100.

Yeah he loves them girls but has hardly sex with them in first place. After 750 chapters he had sex with literally 3 women. And one of them once, one barely few times maybe dozen (all mostly off screen) and with one a lot. And none of them were really hookers or just some write fillers. The one he loves the most is his first and for about 500 chapters from some point he often remembers her.

750 chapters people. That is like 2 weeks of reading day and night.

As for love interests MC behaves like any male from that world. Men have many wives and concubines. It is based on older our world where getting new wive or concubine was like going to shop. Europe stopped with it earlier for common people but lords and kings did this well above 15 century. Arabs didn't stop it. As for asians idk but they had this fairly recently.

As for novel itself.. It started like any other this type of novel and after around 30-40 chapters it created its own thing and it is really really really good. Especially past 100 chapters where it reads more like A Song of Fire and Ice than your typical this type of novel.

Usually i am very picky about what i like and i can safely say that this is one of best things i have read. Only thing i would love for author to stop is to explain same things 100+ times. I can't even think how many times Sky Poison Crystal (or whatever) proprieties were recalled. Thankfully around chapter 400 he probably noticed it himself and it decreased.

I really wanted to like this story

I really wanted to like this story. I read up to 380 and have to say goodbye. It has some really well thought out ideas, but the MC is just a hypocrite. He goes off telling girls they are #1 when that is all a lie. The fights were fun at first, but they are just the same thing just with louder bangs. Everyone is always astonished at everything. The over powered plot armors don’t make it fun anymore. I do suggest you give the story a try. Just wasn’t my cup of tea.

It was one of my favorites, but now...

If you like beta Japanese MC's, then this is not for you. I still can not believe some people are offended by the MC's brutal ways. This is a fantasy world, set in a dog-eat-dog world. Look at the history of the Ming Dynasty, Spanish Inquisitions, The Crusaders, history is filled with violent eras, and a lot of Chinese light novels are somewhat set in similar times, with a mix of fantasy. Getting that out of the way.

One of the main reasons I am losing interest in this novel is the way the author halts suspense with an introduction of a new harem member. The plot is going well, and the suspense builds up, but out of nowhere, a new girl is introduced. As others have mentioned, the LV has become repetitive, and after 490 chapters, same enemies with different names. I know his home nation is the weakest in the continent, but the power levels of other nations is ridiculous. As of right now, there are 10 cultivation realms, with 9 levels each. The MC is late teens, early 20's, but he is considered a genius in his nation, and that is through plot armors. Every time he goes to a new nation, there are others that are as young or younger, but more powerful than the MC, and it keeps going like that every time a new area is introduced. Going by the author's logic, some 5 year-old in a different nation has reach the top cultivation of the MC's home nation.

If Don't Like MCs That Don't Mind Slaughtering People Then This Isn't For You

Seriously. Right at the beginning, they say that he's slaughtered millions of people. What does that mean for the readers? It means You're going to be reading something with a character that's slightly murder-happy. Don't think too much about it. I find it reminiscent of MGA, since both MCs are murder-happy, but Yun Che is at least kind to the women he loves.
(Chu Feng is a possessive asshat.)
Yun Che is, indeed, an incredibly OP MC, but let's face it: In martial arts novels like this, the MCs are either stupidly weak, or stupidly OP. You can take your pick, but I prefer the stupidly OP MCs. If they're going to be unrealistic, they might as well be badass.

I used to like it but now...

I used to love this novel for the starting 200-300 chapters. Sure there was nothing new in this novel as the novel borrows most of the elements from other novels of Xianxia/Xuanhuan category (Talented protagonist being reincarnated into a "trash"/ Super powerful & All-knowing Master who lacks true body (Jasmine)/ MC having super OP treasure) but it was still fine given I liked the MC’s personality.

Now it has become totally repetitive. It’s annoying to see every idiot out there claiming how strong they are and then getting their asses kicked by Yun Che. It was fun at start but now their arrogant attitude is annoying the hell out of me especially seeing no villain has any brains…they are just stupid villains who continue to underestimate Yun Che even after knowing that he can easily defeat opponents far beyond his level.

The other thing I’m hating is how easily Yun Che easily overcome every trouble. No matter how strong the oppponent is he always gains new power or find help during the middle of a battle. He might use all his stamina and author would highlight that it's impossible for MC to continue but then MC would easily overpower dozen of strong guys... There are events which author would hype to showcase that MC is deep crisis but then resolve the said crisis by giving MC heaven defying treasure or legacy. The plot armor is too thick. It’s like all the treasures and legacies are waiting for MC.

Romance and harem in the series are totally annoying. Author really sucks in the romance department. Most of the female love interest are one dimensional idiots with no personality at all. His past life love interest, his little aunt, the princesses from Blue Wind Empire and Phoenix Empire… their personality are completely same (Kind hearted plus naive and stupid). Its like author just changes name of the female character but they are all same including their jade like skin! You wouldn’t find a single girl interesting. And those who are interesting at start will soon turn into one dimensional after falling for Yun Che’s awesomeness *cough* Little Fairy *cough*

The baddest part is how author keeps on saying how awesome Yun Che is. Plus author would tell us about his abilities multiple times in a chapter. We already know he can defeat opponents far beyond his level and that he has support of many legacies but there is no need to be a fangirl in every chapter and repeat this in every chapter which has action. Of course character shilling is important in such novels but there is a limit.

ATG: Pros and Cons
by CaptainNuja
March 1st, 2016, 4:56pm
Rating: N/A
Pros:
-Beginning starts out interesting and strong
-MC is likable in the beginning and kicks ass
-MC is smart and cunning
-a lot of humor
-good action early on
-plot is interesting
-world building is quite nice
-lots of diversity between powers, it leaves a lot to the imagination
-female characters are somewhat independent and not the usual damsel in distress

cons:
-MC becomes really unlikable later on
-Harem gets annoying and romance is terribly written
-Action scene becomes repetitve and they all sound/look alike
-Enemies are all dull and repetitve, becoming brainless and are all alike
-Yun Che's plot armor are above and beyond ridiculous levels (higher than linley's from CD)
-Random power ups for no reason
-humor starts to dull when author tries to incorporate "fan service/ ecchi moments" into story
-all characters, except MC, are 1 dimensional and poorly written
-BAD writting overall
-MC's arrogance becomes hypocritical and unreasonable
-MC is a rapist no matter what anyone says (and a molester)

Overall, I started out loving ATG, read 100 chapters all the way through in one night (when the translations were only at ch. 100) and enjoyed it. Nearing the late 200 chapters though, I started noticing a lot of repetition with EVERYTHING and inconsistiencies with the MC's personality, It feels as if the author let the success get to his head and started to write drivel. after the late 300's I thoroughly hated the MC's personality. It was hypocritical, demeaning, unreasonable, arrogant, and dull. He became the average xian xia protagonist. I was really disappointed because I really loved the novel's beginning. (also he rapes a girl who "supposedly" actually wanted it. I don't care if she wanted it, if she says no, then it means no. You don't force it on a person who CAN'T EVEN MOVE TO RESIST. Anyone saying it is not rape is delusional. Is it acceptable in the context of the story? Possibly. But rape is still rape. I felt morally disgusted with MC after that part and it only went downhill from there). You can choose to read this novel but really, there are better choices for reincarnation novels. Transcending the Nine Heavens and Sovereign of the Three Realms are two novels that have reincarnation and the author's writting style is especially eloquent. The plots are interesting and REMAIN interesting unlike ATG. Characters are fleshed out more and repetitiveness is less common.

What can I say. This novel it's really freaking good. Why? Well first of all lets start with the fact that the freaking reincarnation actually plays a role in the story. Other novels, such as BTTH, have the mc be some dude who reincarnates and then never mentions the fact that he is from another world again? The only reason they add that its as a gimmick to get the audience to feel more connected to the mc. In ATG the reincarnation plays a huge role in the story and it is done very well. The pacing of the story is well done and you are almost always looking forward to something happening. Other than this the main character is the best I have ever seen from any asian novel/comic. It is very rare to see asian main character actually purposely flirt with the females and making moves on them. The main character is a boss, and besides a few flaws every now and then for the sake of plot ,such as the recent burning heaven incident, I can easily say he is the best main character of any of the novels I have read/reading. Overall this is probably my favorite novel and although since all these novels are ongoing this spot is always changing, I still recommend it to everyone. P.S. Did I mention the amazing godly harem?

Great translation, Great story, Great everything

I was initially put off by some of the comments describing the protagonist as some sort of ruthless jerk before I started reading this novel.

But after reading it, I've got no idea where they got that from. We must be reading completely different books... or perhaps they're just trolling.

In nearly every single time the protagonist kills somebody, its pretty much always in self defence, and that only applies to enemies who are dead set on killing him. Even when fighting, as long as the opponent treats the protag with honour and respect, he'd return the same respect and let them off with the minimum amount of injury when he wins. If anything I'd say he's too damn nice. The only people the protag has gone out his way to try kill are the ones who murdered his family or intend to the same to his friends. Good for him I say!! A true man will no less to protect his family and loved ones.

As for the novel itself, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The translation quality is flawless, no machine translation nonsense, no bad grammar, excellent writing to the level of Ren's Coiling Dragon translation (perhaps slightly better, as no bad naming sense in westernised names). The story itself is even more interesting than Coiling Dragon. The cliffhangers, the adventures, the twists and the FEELS, oh man the feels. That alone makes it better than CD. The protag in this novel is a manly man. He's also more emotional character than the protag in CD, which makes it more enjoyable to read through as he faces various challenges. Great writing, great story, great characters. This is the best Chinese novel I've ever had the pleasure of reading. A fantastic book through and through.

All hail the great translators of this great novel for bringing it to the english speaking world. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ
