To illustrate: He had to walk for half an hour until he reached the first crossbow, but when he went back to the waiting room he was constantly under fire by arrows. There is no such thing as a crossbow with a ~3 mile radius. Even if there were other crossbows popping up, with a busted ankle which means no ability to dodge, he would have never made it back. You might be lucky enough to be missed a few times, but no way a slow moving crawling target is missed for an hour long. No amount of plot armor could realistically make you survive this. It should have been just the 3~5 arrows and him dragging his crippled body for an hour while leaving a trail of blood on the floor and fighting to remain conscious. At least this would have been in the realm of possible and it is how it was originally written in the novel.
