From Yen Press:

The “Curse Killing Arc” . . . The “Time Killing Arc” . . . As each incarnation of the terrible events in Hinamizawa unfolds, Rika Furude must watch as her friends descend into madness and despair, knowing the only fate that awaits her is death. With the unique ability to see all of these worlds, Rika desperately searches for the common links between them, which will help her break the cycle and give her and her friends a happy future beyond June 1983. But with less than a month before the cotton drifting in her current life, will Rika be able to change destiny in time?

The story of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is divided into a total of eight chapters: four "Question" arcs and four "Answer" arcs. Each chapter keeps the same main characters, but ends in a different way. However, each chapter gives valuable answers, hints, and clues to the previous one, while at the same time bringing forth even more mysteries.

The question arcs are:
1. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Onikakushi Hen
2. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Watanagashi Hen
3. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Tatarigoroshi Hen
4. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Himatsubushi Hen

6. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Tsumihoroboshi Hen
7. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Minagoroshi Hen
8. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Matsuribayashi Hen

Excellent Series for Thinkers

If you're looking for a no-brainer series, Higurashi: When They Cry isn't it. If you're looking for a convoluted, complex and sometimes confusing story that is meant to be dissected and then pieced back together, bit by bit, to solve the mysteries of the world created in the volumes - then you will love this series.

This particular portion of the series needs to be read after the four Question Arcs (see the reading order in the Series Description above). Unfortunately, it is the only one of the four Answer Arcs that has been fully scanlated - but fortunately, it answers just about every question you could have about the series. It sums up the first two Answer Arcs sufficiently enough to give you an idea what you were meant to "learn" by them and it ties up almost every loose end that you could hope to see tied up. The final Answer Arc volumes would be icing on the cake, sure, but this sufficiently answers your questions and provides some closure to the series. So even if you're sticking to scanlations, you should be content enough with this (though I'd advise reading what IS scanlated from the other Answer Arcs).

Great for thrill! I'm not really used to watching ghost movies or whatsoever, so I was hugging my baby brother and shivering in my blanket throughout. There's an animated version of it (So just forget That2ndGuy's especially offending comment) and I actually watched the animation instead of reading the manga. It was great and sent shivers down my back!

How can anyone follow this series? I mean, I got through a bunch of chapters (too many) and I'm still lost. I understand how the arcs go, but it's just annoying to follow... painfully annoying. I forced myself far enough. It became something along the lines of intensive training. They got the title right, but left part of it out. It should be "When They Cry from Frustration: Massacre of Chapters"
Just take a look at related series and try to figure the order they go in. That alone should have deterred me.
