Fantasy World is one of strangest and most charming pieces by Ishinomori Shotaro. The story is simple, Jun (basically Ishinomori himself) struggles to create manga which would please his editor and readers. The problem lies within Jun's lively imagination which creates amazing worlds in his mind. And when he tries to put them on paper his editor wants something more “normal” and “classic”.
Yes, that's the story. The thing is, Ishinomori's imagination is superb. If you consider reading this, then you should take a few things into account. This piece was written with “a flow of mind” technique. It means that author wrote (drawn) down what he was thinking. There are dozens of pages without a single word where pictures follow up their predecessors in gentle fashion. The whole work is also highly abstract.
I really like abstraction in manga if it’s done right. And you bet this is the case. Ishinomori's gentle storytelling leads to various worlds which are portrayed through incredible drawings. Stories varies in style and meaning. It’s really good manga, maybe not Ishinomori’s most famous one but definitely one of his best.
