I am not a fan of dimwitted heroines. And Ninghu is just that. Big ambitions and small brains is all she is. None of the characters are like-able and honestly, at one point I just started taking pleasure in their misery and was rooting for them all to end up with miserable fates.

It starts off slow and only starts really moving around volume 4 or so. Honestly, for a while I thought I'd drop it because I really don't like naive female leads and that's exactly what Ninghu is. She starts to get a bit more understanding of the way the palace life works later on and so she's become a little more tolerable.

The story telling has also become better in later volumes. Some of the issues I had with it in the early volumes was due to the mystery Yi Huan was trying to create around her characters. It's not a bad thing to keep the histories of the characters secret in order to create more mystery, but there's a way to do it right, and a way that makes the reader feel lost instead of intrigued. Unfortunately here it was the latter. Very few of the characters actually make me want to root for them or get to know more about them. The only one that I've really liked is King Xun and that's due to how he was introduced. I could understand a little of what was going through his mind and that helped me like his character. Other characters either are exactly as they seem, or are introduced with very little of what truly makes them who they are and are therefore very difficult to understand.

Basically, the story is okay. It took several volumes to build up to something that is actually interesting to me. I'm a little torn about what kind of rating to actually give it because it took a decent time commitment to actually get somewhere worth the 8 rating I've given it for now.

Oh, and while the art is okay, sometimes the faces are off and pull me out of the story.

I had read a few raving reviews before trying this manhua. What I expected were plot twists and some semblance of uniqueness, but what I felt after about vol 4 was just irritation. The plot twists, I could easily predict while reading and remembering the genre labels. The relationship between the King and Lingyu was interesting, but the relationship between Ninghu and Lingyu was frustratingly cliched. Ninghu's initial attraction to Lingyu struck me as odd because of *spoilers*. It didn't help that their personalities are shallow and predictable to me.

I'll have to admit though, Scarlet Palace does have a deeper plot compared to other romance shoujo series.

Overall, hardcore romance fans would probably enjoy this. Those who are looking for more plot with deep characters and slow subtle romance should look elsewhere.

Wow, i've never expected a manhua to be that good. the art wasn't good at first, but it has improved a lot recently xD
To me, this manhua is somehow like Yume no Shizuku, but the characters are better biggrin especially Ling Yu, much more mysterious (& stronger manner) than Ibrahim ^^

Just wonder, most of the eunuch guys are that good-looking o___O

I love this series so, so much. I've got a soft spot for the romances of other people's concubines - they're few and far in between, and usually the plot sucks (well I can think of a few good Drops of Dreams of a Golden Birdcage). But this is so, so interesting, and the plot development is unpredictable.

i don't know how to put these feelings i have while reading this manhua... x A x

this is the first time i read a manhua wherein the relationship is mostly consisting of secrets and forbidden connections. king to eunich (who is not really eunich), while eunich to servant(main -crossdressing as guy) and probably also to king, and the "stepbrother" to servant(main), wherein both stepbrother and servant bound to a scheme to offer servant as wife of king.

omg plot twist! lmfao ROFL xDDD

overall, the plot, secrets, etc. etc. is so exciting and shouts for MORE!!
one can't help but only ask for more and squeel not only because of bishies
but because of the continuation that everyone is dying to know >: DDD

It seems to be turning out to be a love dodecahedron, you can never truly figure out who means what to who. I feel sorry for the main guy in that he just seems to be the sexual punching bag for all the influential men, including the King. This is gonna be a unique romance to be sure.

I love historical manga, espiecially Yi Huan's work <3 <3. I just finished reading chapter 9. And now I can't guess what will happen in the future, the girl would end up with what guy ~.~
So far, the story is good and quite realistic smile) The only thing that get on my nerves is that the manga hasn't been finished yet and I guess I will have to wait quite a long time (_ _")

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I'm so confused. In the last two chapters (8 and 9), what did Ning Hu see? Is Ling Yu and the King having a relationship or what? I was looking forward to a sweet love between the two leads. However, it seems the story is getting complicated.

A lot of people complain that manhuas are not as good as mangas, but whoever overgeneralizes like that has not tried Scarlet Palace. Yi Huan has really got it DOWN for this wonderful historical tale with elements of suspense, politics, mystery and intrigue, with elements of budding romance (but who she will end up with, whether the king, the eunich, or her step-brother, remains a question mark). Compared to her previous works, which I also thought were good, this work is Yi Huan's most polished. You can definitely tell that she plans out the plot extremely carefully so everything is revealed (or not revealed) with perfect flow and storytelling. I recommend this HIGHLY to all lovers of historical genderbender/romance! Not to mention the boys are HOT.

Also, in response to a previous reviewer:
" first it was puzzling that a romance could even happen to an eunuch and the protagonist because eunuchs are castrated and hence loses all sexual urges. But after that, it started to make sense."
Well, not that this topic applies to this series, but just because one does not have sexual urges doesn't mean they can't feel for someone romantically, or love someone of the opposite sex anymore. Sex afterall, is not a requirement for love.
